Superati i 51 anni, il pensiero scansa la stanchezza e si rifugia nei sogni di 30 anni or sono, tornando al giorno in cui raggiunsi la maggior età. Quel giorno mi dissi che avrei viaggiato in tutti quei luoghi esotici e lontani che mi attiravano con promesse di appagamento di ogni specie.
E di viaggi ne ho fatti, ma raramente quelli che avrei sperato. Solo adesso, entrando nel secondo mezzo secolo della mia vita, accetto che va bene lo stesso non essere andata alle Maldive, non aver preso l’Orient Express, non aver soggiornato al Ritz. Forse farò ancora in tempo e forse non me n’importa neanche più tanto.
I viaggi sono stati altri, spesso faticosi, come il primo lungo cammino che mi aspettava dopo quel fatidico compleanno. Un crudo e buio viaggio verso la maturità, tenendo per mano un padre che chiudeva il suo soggiorno terreno ben troppo presto.
Così, nel mio diario di viaggio, stipo ricordi che non si catturano con la macchina fotografica … le voci dei miei avi siciliani che vibrano tra i ruderi di Selinunte … lo sguardo dei ragazzi di strada di Johannesburg, venuti da noi e restii a tornare nella loro terribile realtà … le lacrime dei veterani dello sbarco a Pachino tornati su quella stessa spiaggia a distanza di 60 anni … la neve che fiocca sul filo spinato di Auschwitz … la paura dei miei compagni di viaggio nella malattia che, avendo portato via mio padre, tornò a chiamare anche me. Diary of a journey
Now that I have I turned 51 I find my mind sidestepping fatigue and seeking refuge in dreams that go back 30 years or so. I recall the day I became an adult, on my eighteenth birthday. I promised myself that day that I would visit all the exotic, far-away places that beckoned with promises of many sorts of weird and wonderful things.
And I must say, I have traveled, but rarely to the places I would have liked. Only now, as I enter the second half-century of my life, can I accept that it doesn’t matter if I haven’t been to the Maldives, or that I’ve never taken the Orient Express nor stayed at the Ritz. Perhaps I still have time to do some of these things, but maybe I don’t even care that much any more.
My travels have instead taken me in other, often painful directions, such as the first, lengthy journey I undertook after that fateful birthday. A bleak, gloomy journey to adulthood, holding my father’s hand as he took his premature leave from the land of the living.
And so, I have stored memories in my travel diary that I couldn’t record with my camera … the voices of my Sicilian ancestors echoing through the crumbling ruins of Selinunte… the expressions of street kids from Johannesburgh who came to stay with us and then didn’t want to return to their terrible lives… the tears of veterans who were in the landing at Pachino and then revisited that very same beach 60 years later… snow falling on barbed wire at Auschwitz… the fear felt by those who were at my side during my voyage into an illness that first took my father and then returned to claim me. But I turned a deaf ear.

I miei primi ricordi delle Feste mi riportano ad abitudini molto diverse da quelle di oggi.
…Dunque le Feste. Attese. Vagheggiate. Gioiose.
Cominciavano con le letterine, indirizzate ai genitori, cara mamma e caro papà, sempre le stesse con scarsa fantasia. Piene di buoni propositi: sarò buono, sarò obbediente, vi voglio bene, eccetera. Ne conservo ancora qualcuna insieme alle pagelle della prima e della seconda elementare.
L'apertura ufficiale arrivava la sera del 24 dicembre. Il cenone della vigilia. E il presepe. Anzi presepio. Ci avevano lavorato a lungo, bambini e genitori. Avevano raccolto la vellutina in campagna e nei giardini delle città. I personaggi del presepio venivano conservati da un anno all'altro e così le casette dei contadini, le pecore dei pastori, i tre Re magi, la Madonna col suo manto azzurro e San Giuseppe che non so perché risultava calvo, forse per dargli un sembiante da persona anziana e senza le tentazioni della carne. E il bambino. Il bambino Gesù, un corpicino nudo o appena velato per nascondere il sesso.
…Finita la cena, i bambini recitavano una poesiola o leggevano la letterina. Poi andavano a dormire e venivano svegliati pochi minuti prima della mezzanotte. Si formava un piccolo corteo col bimbo più piccolo in testa che portava il bambino Gesù e lo deponeva nella culla vigilata dalla mucca e dall'asino. La cerimonia finiva lì e si tornava a dormire, ma non era facile riprender sonno anche perché si sapeva che al risveglio avremmo trovato i regali.
I regali del Natale erano tuttavia leggeri. Una bambolina per le femmine, ai maschi un gioco dell'oca o il meccano che allora era in voga, abituava a una manualità molto incoraggiata dai maestri della scuola.
I grandi, genitori e altri parenti e amici, non si scambiavano regali tra loro, non era uso. L'albero di Natale ci era del tutto sconosciuto e lo stesso Babbo Natale - almeno nelle regioni del Centro e del Sud - non esisteva. My earliest recollections of holidays are of very different traditions than those we follow today.

They always began with the same unimaginative little letters to parents; “Dear Mum and Dad…” which were full of good intentions: “I will be good, obedient, I love you”, etc. I still have a few, along with some first and second-grade report cards.
The season opened officially the evening of December 24th with a Christmas Eve dinner and a crib scene. Or rather, a Nativity scene. Parents and children spent a lot of time over it. They gathered moss in the country and in city gardens. Nativity figurines were stored away from one year to the next, as were little peasant huts, shepherds’ sheep, the Three Wise Men, the Virgin Mary in her blue mantle and Saint Joseph who, for some unknown reason, was bald – maybe so he would look old and immune to temptations of the flesh. And the Child, Baby Jesus: a small naked body, perhaps wearing a scrap of cloth for the sake of modesty.
...After dinner children would recite a short poem or read out their little letters. Then they would go to bed, and be awakened at a few minutes to midnight. A little procession would form, led by the youngest child who would carry Baby Jesus and lay him in his crib in the Manger, where he would be watched over by the cow and the donkey. The ceremony was then over and everyone would go back to bed, but it wasn’t easy to get to sleep again because we knew our presents would be awaiting us when we woke.
Christmas presents, however, were modest. A little doll for girls, and a board game or a Meccano, which was popular at the time, for boys; school teachers strongly encouraged the game because it fostered manual dexterity.
Adults – parents, relatives and friends - didn’t exchange gifts; it wasn’t traditional. Christmas trees were unheard of and Father Christmas – at least in central and southern Italy – didn’t exist. A few vague references to them had trickled down to us from acquaintances who lived in Milan and Turin. But from Rome on down,

Il mausoleo romano, unito all’insediamento medievale costruito come sistema fortificato a cavallo della strada e composto dalle mura con il palazzo e la chiesa sul lato opposto, ha affascinato da sempre artisti, studiosi, poeti che hanno immortalato il complesso isolato e dominante sulla campagna circostante, corrispondente in epoca romana ai vasti possedimenti del Triopio di Erode Attico.
Le mura perimetrali sono perfettamente conservate con le torrette, ma oggi sono per lo più incluse dentro proprietà private che, gradualmente, hanno occupato la parte esterna e interna al recinto, rendendo impossibile la percezione della sua integrità.
Nel 1824 Giuseppe Valadier collocò importanti frammenti sulla tamponatura del palazzo medievale per mantenere sul posto i reperti archeologici che si andavano recuperando dagli scavi. Il lavoro fu poi ampliato da Luigi Canina che applicò questo metodo nei suoi successivi interventi sui monumenti funerari che fiancheggiano la via Appia.

Titolo I°

Art. 1) - E’ costituita una società per azioni denominata XX...1905 S.p.A..
Art. 2) - La società ha sede nel Comune di XX.
L’organo Amministrativo potrà istituire e sopprimere sedi secondarie in Italia e all’estero, agenzie, rappresentanze, depositi, uffici, dipendenze in genere.
Le comunicazioni e le notifiche ai soci verranno effettuate all’indirizzo comunicato dal socio alla società e risultante dal libro dei soci.
Art. 3) - La società ha per oggetto:
- la produzione e la commercializzazione di amarene o altre frutta sciroppate, sciroppi di frutta in genere, bevande alcoliche ed analcoliche, liquori, vini liquorosi ed aperitivi;
- la produzione e la commercializzazione di gelati, preparati per la produzione di gelati e per l’industria dolciaria, nonché di prodotti affini e similari;
- la conduzione, in proprio o attraverso contratti di affiliazione (franchising), di bar, caffè, gelaterie e pasticcerie;

Art. 1) - A limited company called XX... S.p.A. is incorporated.
Art. 2) - The Company’s registered office is in the XX municipality.
The Directors are entitled to set up or close branch offices, agencies, agents, warehouses, offices, and representative offices in general, both in Italy and abroad.
Communications and notices to Shareholders will be sent to the address given to the Company by a Shareholder and as it appears in the Company’s Share Register.
Art. 3) - The corporate purpose is:
- to manufacture and sell sour cherries or other fruit in syrup, fruit syrups in general, alcoholic and soft drinks, spirits, liqueur wines and aperitifs;
- to manufacture and sell ice cream, mixes for manufacturing ice cream and for the confectionery industry, as well as related and similar products;
- to manage bars, cafés, ice cream parlors and pastry shops on its own behalf or through franchising agreements;
- to manufacture and sell machinery and accessories for the sale and/or consumption of the afore-mentioned products.
For its corporate purpose, as a side line and not as its main activity, the Company is also entitled to undertake all commercial, industrial, financial, movable and immovable, and import/export operations, which its Directors consider to be necessary or useful for said purpose, including acquiring, whether directly or indirectly, interest or holdings in other companies that are incorporated or about to be incorporated, in Italy and abroad, which have a related or similar corporate purpose to the Company’s.
The Company is entitled to grant loans and guarantees to third parties by decision of the Directors.
Inasmuch as they are reserved for professionals who are registered in professional registers, the following “protected” professional activities are excluded from this corporate purpose: investment services as defined in Leg. Decree 58/1998, collecting savings from the public and financial activities as defined in Heading V, Leg. Decree 385/1993.
Art. 4) - The Company’s duration is fixed starting from the date it is legally incorporated up until 12.31.2050, and may be extended or wound up early, according to law. An extension of the Company does not entitle Shareholders to avail themselves of the right of withdrawal.
