Basta scorrere velocemente la recente storia del design per rendersi conto di come certe “rivoluzioni” siano da attribuire a movimenti, più che all’opera di un singolo designer: l’onda pop partita da Torino con Piero Gilardi, Ceretti- De Rossi, Giuseppe Raimondi, Studio 65 agli inizi degli anni sessanta, concretizzatasi nel catalogo della Gufram. Quindi il design radicale fiorentino degli Archizoom e del Superstudio (1966- 1972), che trovò eco nella Poltronova, guidata dal visionario Sergio Cammilli. Poi Alchimia, creata a Milano nel 1976 dall’unione di Adriana e Alessandro Guerriero, Bruno e Giorgio Gregori, progressivamente sempre più legata alla figura di Alessandro Mendini. Infine Memphis fondata da Ettore Sottsass nel 1981.
Anche l’architettura ha fatto la sua parte: Postmoderno e Decostruttivismo hanno profondamente influenzato il design.
Affievolitosi lo slancio utopico, arriva la stagione dei revival stilistici: neobarocco e neodecò rinascono per mano di designer abili nel filtrare echi del passato in forme contemporanee dotate di una marcata componente emozionale. Anche in questo caso si tratta di movimenti, non teorici, ma stilistici, che aggregano creativi di diversa formazione e provenienza.
Per trovare figure di progettisti capaci di cambiare la tonalità del design e di influenzare il gusto, al pari di Patricia Urquiola, forse bisogna risalire a Gio Ponti. Non solo per il vario repertorio di forme, per l’attenzione decorativa, ma per il sentimento e l’approccio. il progetto di Patricia Urquiola ha profondamente mutato la temperatura del design contemporaneo. Anche quando crea un pezzo singolo riesce ad irradiare un’atmosfera. Ogni suo lavoro appartiene ad una visione più generale di cui controlla ogni dettaglio, di cui segue il farsi con passione e meticolosità, applicando invenzione, tecnologia e fare manuale. Come Penelope, tesse le sue tele, disponendo trame e orditi con pazienza e tenacia femminili.
Patricia ha femminilizzato il design. Non nel senso dell’attribuzione al proprio lavoro di un carattere femminile contrapposto ad uno dominante maschile, quanto per via di quell’aderenza alle cose di cui le donne si rivelano capaci. Aderenza che, nel suo caso, significa partecipazione attiva e vigile al loro farsi. Patricia accompagna per mano i suoi progetti e ne cura l’inserimento contestuale, affinché non patiscano spaesamenti. Ci lavora sopra con il puntiglio di un’ artigiana, di una ricamatrice, verrebbe da dire, dato il prevalere nel suo lavoro delle arti femminili, facendo in modo che appaiano spontanei, che rivelino la freschezza dei vestiti della festa, quando s’usavano inamidati.
Ha riscattato cucito, ricamo crochet, maglia, che impone a quanti lavorano nel suo studio, maschi compresi, d’imparare, utilizzandoli, non tanto per aggiungere ridondanza decorativa agli oggetti, o per banalmente, femminilizzarli, ma per creare delle pelli strutturali, piuttosto che di finitura, che si definiscono attraverso un percorso sperimentale, dando sostanza ai progetti.
La freschezza che i suoi lavori comunicano, anche se sono costati anni di approfondimento, è una qualità cara a Patrizia, che non la ritiene sconveniente, svilente, anzi molto pertinente e premiante. E’ un’attitudine che, forse, ha ereditato dal suo maestro Achille Castiglioni con cui a Milano si è laureata ma che, prima di tutto, deriva da un suo modo di guardare le cose, come sempre diceva Bruno Munari, “ da un altro punto di vista” , con la curiosità e lo stupore dei bambini che sempre sanno scorgervi aspetti imprevisti e che le manipolano per trasformarle nelle loro visioni.
Nel 1986 Claude Levi Strass, il più grande antropologo vivente, che in novembre compirà 100 anni, in occasione del conferimento del premio Nonino, pronunciò un appassionato elogio del lavoro manuale: “ le società studiate dagli etnologi associano il lavoro manuale al rituale, all’atto religioso, come se il fine fosse quello di intrecciare con la natura un dialogo in virtù del quale natura e uomo possono collaborare. L’uno concedendo all’altro ciò che lui spera, in cambio di segni di rispetto, o persino di pietà cui l’uomo si obbliga nei confronti di una realtà collegata all’ordine soprannaturale. Ancora oggi sussiste una connivenza tra questa visione delle cose e la sensibilità dell’artigiano. Costui siccome continua a mantenere un diretto contatto con la natura e la materia, sa di non avere il diritto di violentarle, ma deve cercare pazientemente di capirle, di sollecitarle con precauzione, direi quasi di sedurle, attraverso la dimostrazione perennemente rinnovata di una familiarità ancestrale fatta di cognizioni, di ricette e di abilità manuali trasmesse di generazione in generazione”
Non ho mai parlato di religione con Patricia, ma so che per lei il lavoro manuale è un rituale, una cerimonia cui dedica altari sacrali. Può essere considerato tale l’allestimento del 2008 presso lo spazio di Nicola Quadri a Milano del progetto per Rosenthal, costato ben tre anni di lavoro. Le porcellane bianche, i vari successivi prototipi e gli stampi, allineati sui grandi tavoli antichi, drappeggiati in candide tovaglie, suggerivano la mistica dell’eucarestia. La perfetta scenografia, didascalica nel suo dare conto, punto per punto, del processo e parallelamente evocativa, suggeriva quel devoto rispetto per il fare cui accennava Levi Strass. Patricia non violenta le materie, le rispetta, cerca di comprenderle e si rivela particolarmente abile nel sedurle, traendone risultati inaspettati: straordinari mai forzati, mai innaturali. I sui progetti catturano il consenso proprio per questo suo rispetto nei confronti delle cose e delle materie alle quali si avvicina per conoscerle. Si comprende che nascono da un dialogo paritetico tra due anime: quella del progettista e quella della materia che, compresa, volentieri si lascia plasmare in forme non consuete.
Patricia, come un’ ape operosa e instancabile, impollina. Succhia spunti dalle cose quotidiane, bracciali, frullini per il tè ecc, dagli stili, dai progetti storici, dalle arti applicate, dai genius loci e li rigenera. Non reinterpreta, non evoca, ricrea, ripercorrendo con pazienza la strada della genesi. Per questo ci tiene a mostrare come le cose si fanno, affinandosi e perfezionandosi. Per questo esibisce gli strumenti e le materie, gli aghi e i fili, quasi con l’orgoglio del samurai che rotea le sue lame affilate.
La mostra “Pelle d’asino”, allestita ad Abitare il tempo di Verona nel settembre 2006, raccontava attraverso il farsi della maggior parte dei suoi progetti come la pelle fosse il filo conduttore del suo lavoro. Nell’allestire un grande tavolo con i modelli progressivi di alcuni oggetti complessi, nell’esporre, organizzati nei cestelli della Kartell, gomitoli, spagnolette di filo, forbici, aghi, spilli, uncinetti e ferri da maglia; nel mostrare prima nudi, poi vestiti con fantasiosi patchwork tessli e di pelle alcuni dei suoi imbottiti, ha inteso evidenziare come la sua ricerca, resa possibile da tecnologie complesse, la rimandi al mondo dell’arts and crafts, senza distoglierla, però, dalla sua scuola di pensiero milanese, portata sempre alla sintesi, avversa alla sbavature e alle ridondanze
Spagnola, anzi basca, estroversa, generosa di parole e di segni, musicali e fluidi, come il suo eloquio addolcito dalla cantilena spagnoleggiante, ha assorbito alla università ( si è laureata al politecnico di Milano) la lezione dei maestri milanesi: Achille Castiglioni, prima di tutti, da cui ha imparato che bisogna farsi affascinare da cose d’ogni genere. Bruno Munari, da cui ha appreso che “ da cosa nasce cosa”, che, ad esempio, da un braccialetto trovato da un rigattiere può giungere l’ispirazione per realizzare una lampada (Caboche di Foscarini, best seller dell’azienda). Di Tomas Maldonado ricorda, come un gran regalo la lezione sul comfort “ Per questo,” sostiene, “ cerco sempre di offrire con gli oggetti che disegno un comfort che riguardi in senso lato il vivere delle persone”
Della sua formazione mantiene e coltiva ricordi nitidi: è convinta che ogni azione appartenga a scelte, anche lontane nel tempo e che le scelte siano conseguenza di posizioni assunte”. Niente avviene per caso, ogni lavoro è tessitura paziente, anche se conserva lo slancio dell’improvvisazione e la fluidità del gesto spontaneo.
Moltiplica le collaborazioni e le forme, sempre riuscendo a rendere riconoscibile il suo segno, o meglio la sua tonalità. “Fare design”, dice, “ è come una musica che va”. La sua musica è felice, zampillante. Come quella di Mozart dona il ritmo alla vita.
Il suo obiettivo è “raccontare l’uso piacevole”. Non intende suscitare conflitti, non vuole provocare, ma assecondare. E di nuovo emerge i lato femminile, inteso come componente espansiva.
Espansivo è un altro termine che calza al suo design, come al suo carattere. Non tanto in senso formale, anche se a lei si deve un importante rinnovamento nelle forme di molte tipologie, quanto in senso relazionale. Ed eccoci alla pelle, vera e propria interfaccia ed elemento di personalizzazione, attraverso cui traspirano, come da quella umana, gli umori del suo progetto. Quella pelle sensibile e variegata che ogni volta reinventa e che rende palpitanti i suoi oggetti.

You only need to scroll quickly back through the recent history of design to realise how certain "revolutions" have to be attributed to movements rather than to the work of any single designer. The Pop Art wave started in Turin at the beginning of the Sixties with Piero Gilardi, Ceretti-De Rossi, Giuseppe Raimondi, and Studio 65, and led to all the objects in the Gufram catalogue. Then came Florentine radical design: Archizoom and Superstudio (1966 - 1972) which made it possible for Poltronova to start producing radical furniture under its visionary CEO Sergio Cammilli. Then came Alchimia, created in Milan in 1976 by Adriana and Alessandro Guerriero, and Bruno and Giorgio Gregori, and which gradually became associated with Alessandro Mendini. Finally there was Memphis, founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1981.
Architecture also played its part: postmodernism and deconstructivism profoundly influenced design.
Then when the utopian momentum began to wear off there was a period of style revivals: neo-baroque and neo art deco were reborn in the hands of designers skilful at filtering echoes of the past into contemporary forms that had a strongly emotional component. These too were movements that were not theoretical but stylistic, and brought together creative people from different fields and backgrounds.
To understand who the designers were who changed the whole tone of design and influenced general taste, as Patricia Urquiola has, perhaps we need to go back to Gio Ponti, not only because of his varied repertoire of forms and his emphasis on the decorative, but because of his general feeling and approach. Patricia Urquiola’s output has profoundly altered the temperature of contemporary design. Even when she creates a single piece, she manages to make it generate an atmosphere. All her work is part of a broader vision of which she controls every detail, following the creative process with passion and meticulousness, making use of creative invention, technology and manual work. She is like Penelope at her loom, weaving warp and woof with female patience and tenacity.
Patricia has feminised design, not in the sense of giving her work a female character in alternative to its predominantly male one, but because there is an intimate connectedness to physical things that women understand better. A connectedness that in Patricia’s case means being active and vigilant in the act of making things, just in case they might suffer by being out of place. She takes them by the hand and ensures they fit into their context. She works on them with the punctiliousness of an artisan or as one might say, given the prevalence of the female arts in her work, an embroideress; making them look spontaneous, showing the freshness evening gowns used to have when they were starched.
Patricia has brought sewing, embroidery, crochet, and knitting back to life. Everyone in her studio including the males has to learn to use them, not so much to add redundant or banal “feminine” decorations to her designs but to give them a skin that is structural, not just a finish. Worked out by trial and error, this is what gives her projects substance.
Even though her designs sometimes take years to perfect, the female freshness they embody is something she holds dear and doesn’t consider problematic or debasing, but extremely relevant and rewarding. Perhaps this is part of an attitude she inherited from Achille Castiglioni, with whom she graduated in Milan, but it is mainly because she has her own way of seeing things; “another point of view” as Bruno Munari used to say, like the curiosity of children; their marvellous way of seeing a thing in their imagination in some unexpected way, and then manipulating it until it becomes what they imagined.
When Claude Lévi-Strauss (the greatest living anthropologist, who will be 100 years old this November) was being awarded the Nonino Prize in 1986 he made a passionate speech in favour of manual work: "in the societies studied by ethnologists, manual work is associated with ritual: religious acts. The purpose of working with your hands is to have a dialogue with the nature of the materials being worked. Man and nature collaborate in an exchange based on mutual respect, or perhaps even on a sense of deep holiness the man feels for those materials. Through his work, he becomes aware of his role in the greater harmony of all things. This complicity with the cosmos still exists today in the work of the skilled artisan. He is still in direct contact with nature and the essence of things, and he knows he must not violate them; he must do his best to understand them patiently, cautiously trying to get their attention and almost, even, seducing them. Time after time we can observe this ancestral familiarity of the artisan with an inherited body of knowledge, methods, and manual skills perpetually renewing itself as it is handed down from generation to generation”.
I have never talked about religion with Patricia but I know manual work is a ritual for her too, a ceremony in which she too performs devotional rites, as in her 2008 exhibition of projects for Rosenthal at the Nicola Quadri Gallery in Milan, which took her three whole years to set up. The white porcelain pieces, the preparatory prototypes and moulds all lined up on large antique tables draped with white tablecloths, did indeed suggest the mysticism of the Eucharist: a perfect tableau, precisely setting out the production process step by step. It also had an evocative feel that suggested the devout “respect for doing” that Lévi-Strass described. As an artisan, Patricia doesn’t violate the materials she works with; she respects and seeks to understand them and is particularly adept at seducing them and coaxing unexpected results out of them in ways that are never forced, never unnatural. So many people love her work because of this respect it shows for objects and materials, coming close to them so that she can intimately have a feel for them. Everyone can see how her designs are the product of a dialogue between her soul as a designer and the soul of the material that she has understood and that willingly lets itself be shaped into unexpected forms.
Patricia is as busy and as tireless as a bee: pollinating as she scoops up ideas, things, and thoughts from everyday life: bracelets, stirrers for tea, other ordinary objects; the images of historical styles and projects, the applied arts; whatever is in the air around her. Then she regenerates these things. She doesn’t reinterpret them, doesn’t evoke them but recreates them anew, patiently working her way along a path that leads to the birth of something else. That’s why in her exhibitions she always goes out of her way to show how her designs come into being through a process of refining and making perfect. She displays materials, threads, tools, and needles almost with the same pride a samurai might take in showing off his sharpened weapons.
In her “Pelle d’asino” (“Donkey hide”) exhibition at “Abitare il Tempo” in Verona in September 2006 she showed the importance of animal skin in her work by setting out the process she goes through when designing with leather. This consisted of displaying the study models of some rather complex projects, set out on a big table with Kartell containers holding balls of wool, skeins of thread, scissors, needles, pins, crochet hooks, and knitting needles. Alongside this she showed some of her leather-covered furniture pieces first before they had been covered, and then finished with her imaginative textile and leather patchwork upholstery. In this way her intention was to be clear that whilst her work can only be made with complex technologies, it has its roots in a world of art and craft. And in this work she never strays away from her “milanese” focus on finding a synthesis that rejects everything futile or redundant.
As a Spanish Basque woman she has an extrovert personality, generous in her use of musical, fluid words and gestures, and has a way of speaking softened by hispanic cadences. At the different universities she attended (principally at Milan Polytechnic, where she graduated) she made her own the lesson of the great Milanese masters, most importantly Achille Castiglioni, who taught her to take an interest in everything around her; and then Bruno Munari, from whom she learned that "one thing leads to another" as, for example, a bracelet that she found in a junk shop and which became her inspiration for a lamp (Caboche by Foscarini, their best seller). Remembering the supreme gift she was given by Tomás Maldonado - a lesson on comfort and its importance - she says “I always try to design objects that offer the type of comfort that will embrace every part of a person’s life".
She retains sharp memories of those formative years because she is in no doubt that whatever we do is the result of choices we made earlier, perhaps a long time ago, and that those choices were, in turn, the result of convictions we had adopted and made our own. “Nothing happens by chance. Even though in design the momentum of improvisation and the fluidity of the spontaneous gesture are always important, each project is the result of patiently putting things together.”
In the course of many commissions and designs she has always managed to make her own recognisable mark or rather, her tone. "Doing design," she says, "is like music that dances along." Happy music, like fountains playing. Like Mozart: a music that gives pace to life.
Her aim as a designer is not to generate conflict or be provocative but to consider “the pleasure of using things" and give comfort. This again shows her feminine side, the expansive generosity that is part of her being.
“Expansive” is a word that not only suits her personality very well, but also her approach to design; not so much in terms of its physical form (even though we are indebted to her for having renewed the forms of many things, in important ways) but in terms of relating. Which brings us back to leather and animal skin. Those are the real interfacing, relating materials of her work: the personalising components through which her tone seems to breathe, just as it breathes through her own sensitive, varied skin every time she designs something, bringing out new objects and making them come alive.

Perugia è un centro di notevole interesse che permette di analizzare uno spaccato delle vicende urbanistiche italiane degli ultimi cinquant’anni, in un contesto particolarmente significativo per la qualità architettonica ed ambientale, le caratteristiche politiche e amministrative, le dimensioni e l’ubicazione del sistema territoriale del Paese.
Nel contempo non si può non evidenziare come la città risenta di alcuni mali tipici delle maggiori città italiane; su tutto, il notevole sviluppo del traffico veicolare privato superiore alla media nazionale.
Hanno contribuito a determinare tale stato di fatto, oltre ad un trasporto nazionale e locale non sempre adeguato, le peculiarità della viabilità di una città medievale e il conseguente spostamento delle aree direzionali e residenziali in territori esterni all’acropoli. È in questo contesto urbanistico che si collocano due fra gli interventi più interessanti e coraggiosi sul piano della mobilita infraurbana cittadina: le scale mobili ed ora il Minimetrò.
Mentre le prime si connotano per l’importanza storica e monumentale dei luoghi interessati, il Minimetrò costituisce invece un’innovativa e ben più importante sfida: quella di contribuire in modo strutturale al miglioramento della viabilità cittadina lungo la dorsale Pian di Massiano-centro storico.
È stato dunque questo il quadro di riferimento che ha portato Il Consiglio Comunale ad approvare con atto n. 71 del 20.04.1998 la costituzione di una società per azioni per la progettazione, realizzazione e la gestione della linea metropolitana leggera Pian di Massiano-Cupa-Monteluce, a prevalente capitale pubblico con riserva, a favore del Comune, del 70% del capitale sociale. Con il medesimo provvedimento, poi modificato con atto C.C. n. 123 del 13.07.1998 sono stati approvati l’atto costitutivo, lo Statuto e i patti parasociali della costituenda società Minimetrò spa.
Il Comune di Perugia ha quindi indetto una gara ad evidenza pubblica con procedura negoziata per l’individuazione del socio privato della costituenda società (bando di gara inviato alla Comunità Europea in data 24.04.1998, pubblicato nel BUR del 05.05.1998 n. 18, parte III e nella Gazzetta Ufficiale del 02.05.1998, Foglio delle inserzioni n. 100 e nei quotidiani nazionali e locali previsti per legge).
L’inserimento dell’opera nel tessuto urbano ha poi comportato la necessaria approvazione della variante al Piano Regolatore Generale relativa al Minimetrò mentre con atto G.C. n. 521 del 10.06.1998 sono state approvate le operazioni della commissione giudicatrice preposta alla valutazione delle offerte dei soggetti intenzionati a proporsi come soci.
La società consortile Metrò Perugia composta dalle società aventi le competenze necessarie è risultata essere il socio privato della costituenda società per azioni al cui interno i soci Apm, Leitner, Sipa ed Umbria Domani, raggruppamento dei costruttori opere civili, sono stati valutati idonei all’aggiudicazione della complessa attività di progettazione costruzione e gestione oltre a prestare le necessarie garanzie finanziarie utili a supportare l’investimento complessivo che, per il 50% risultava finanziato dai Ministeri dei Trasporti e delle Aree Urbane. Con atto rogito notaio Vincenzo Lemmi in data 11.09.1998 è stata quindi costituita la società per azioni Minimetrò. Ma in un quadro normativo nazionale complesso, proteiforme ed in continua evoluzione non è bastato di certo aver individuato un modello, quello della società mista, per consentire il raggiungimento dell’obbiettivo volto alla realizzazione di un’opera pubblica.
Determinante è stato invece il rispetto dei ruoli: da una parte quello dell’amministrazione come ente sostanzialmente concedente i diritti di progettazione, costruzione e gestione, dall’altra la posizione della società che si avvale per l’esercizio delle funzioni ad essa affidate dei suoi soci, ma che esercita nel contempo l’alta vigilanza ed i normali controlli che eserciterebbe su appaltatori esterni.
Un tale equilibrio non è cosa facile da raggiungere soprattutto alla luce di un quadro normativo in qualche caso clamorosamente affollato di disposizioni ed in altri del tutto lacunoso e talvolta contraddittorio. Da qui l’importanza della scelta degli amministratori sia da parte del socio pubblico che da parte del soggetto privato che, animati da una forte responsabilità civica e grande spirito di servizio, hanno connotato l’attività della società sin dalla sua costituzione.
Ed è anche grazie a questa combinazione di professionalità disinteressate, unite al contributo in termini di fare che ha animato i numerosi tecnici e le imprese coinvolte, che, pur in un contesto di grandissime difficoltà, ha consentito il raggiungimento dell’obiettivo prefissato.
Il risultato è oggi un’opera che entra in funzione grazie anche al contributo dell’imprenditoria locale e nazionale generando un volano benefico sul piano economico in controtendenza rispetto ai notevolissimi costi del non fare. Ma la realizzazione acquisisce un valore aggiunto anche sul piano ambientale con particolare riferimento alla riduzione delle polveri sottili che si determina a seguito delle riduzioni di milioni di passaggi di veicoli su gomma.
L’auspicio è pertanto quello che la nuova importante infrastruttura, per le sue caratteristiche sia tecnologiche che per la sua qualità architettonica, possa avvicinarsi a quelle che nella storia hanno reso celebre la nostra città grazie al contributo di quelli che nella tradizione plurisecolare dello statuto Perugino del 1279 venivano indicati come i “…boni homines qui debeant custodire bona fide, sine fraude…” metro di comportamento che oggi può essere tradotto nel più moderno e generale principio di “buona amministrazione”. | Translation - English
Because Perugia is an important place, this is a good opportunity to look back over fifty years of Italian thinking about urban development as it applies to this particularly significant example: Perugia’s architectural and landscape value, its political and administrative physiognomy, and its size and location within the national Italian context.
We must also consider how Perugia has been showing the symptoms caused by an enormous growth in use of the private car, which in Perugia is above the national average.
This condition has come about in part because of Perugia’s physical form as a medieval city built on a hilltop “acropolis” surrounded by a low-lying modern residential periphery, and in part because the national and local transport networks are less than adequate. In response to these factors, two important, boldly conceived systems of urban people movement have been built in Perugia: the first was a system of public escalators and now the MiniMetrò, just completed.
The escalators serve the historically important areas of the city; the MiniMetrò deals with a more contemporary and even more significant challenge: improving the movement of people along a route that connects the low-lying area of Plan di Massiano uphill to the historic city core.
That was the background against which the municipality deliberated, in observance of Law 71 of 20.04.1998, to establish a joint stock company charged with designing, constructing, and operating a light rapid transit line to connect Pian di Massiano, Cupa, and Monteluce. A majority share capital of 70% was retained by the municipality. Under the revisions of Civil Law 123 of 13.07.1998 the municipality then drew up and approved a constitution, charter and para-social pacts for the new company MiniMetrò SpA.
To identify the necessary private partner able to deliver the system under a negotiated procedure, the municipality invited tenders (as required by law) by means of tender notice no. 18 dated 24.04.1998, published in BUR part III on 05.05.1998, in the OJEU on 02.05.1998, and in national and local newspapers.
In order to insert the new MiniMetrò system into the urban structure of Perugia a variation was required to the General Urban Development Plan. At the same time Act G.C. 521 of 10.06.1998 set down the procedures to be followed by the adjudicating commission in assessing the tender bids.
The winning bidder, Metrò Perugia, was a temporary consortium of construction firms (APM, Leitner, Sipa and Umbria Domani) that offered the technical capabilities and the necessary financial guarantees to deliver this complex undertaking, which was to be 50% financed by the Italian Ministry for Transport and Urban Areas. After the commission approved Metrò Perugia’s bid, notary Vincenzo Lemmi issued an act on 11.09.1998 establishing a joint stock company, MiniMetrò. But in the context of Italy’s constantly evolving, highly complex, multiform legislative framework it was not enough simply to have identified a business format (the joint stock company) in order to carry out this public works project.
An exact definition of roles was fundamentally important; on the one hand was the municipality, a public entity empowered to grant development, construction and operational rights. On the other was the joint stock company whose role was to provide the services offered by its constituent partners. Because they were also stockholders, one of the partners would in effect exercise a considerable degree of surveillance and control over its own operations, in a way that would normally be the responsibility of outside contractors.
Maintaining a correct balance in this matter was not legally straightforward, especially because Italy has a body of law that in some cases is overcrowded with regulations, and in others is completely devoid of them or has laws that contradict one another. Against that difficult background it was essential in order to proceed that the MiniMetrò directors representing the public component of the company (the municipality) and those representing the private component (the contractors) must be motivated by a personal sense of civil responsibility and by a generous spirit of public service. Right from its first constitution, MiniMetrò in fact demonstrated its ability to operate consistently on that basis.
This combination of disinterested professionals with practical-minded technical specialists and companies made it possible, despite the extreme difficulties, to deliver the project successfully.
Instead of succumbing to the huge costs of simply doing nothing to solve its transport problems, the city of Perugia now has its new passenger system already in operation, thanks to the effort of local and national business, and is already generating surplus value across the whole city and its territory. But in environmental terms MiniMetrò adds even more value by reducing particulate emissions and eliminating millions of vehicle movements.
Hopefully the advanced technologies and the architectural quality of this important new infrastructure now bring us closer to the spirit of our city fathers, who in giving Perugia its city statute in 1279, were described as boni homines qui debeant custodire bona fide, sine fraude, a standard of behaviour we could translate today into the much more modern principle of “good administration”. | | Italian to English: I primi quarant’anni del Rosso Piceno | Source text - Italian
I primi quarant’anni del Rosso Piceno
1968/2008, quarant’anni che segnano la storia di una delle più importanti Denominazioni delle Marche: il Rosso Piceno.
La denominazione di origine controllata Rosso Piceno è stata istituita nel 1968, anche se la sua storia inizia molto prima. Si parla del vino dei Piceni già prima dell’insediamento dei Romani. Sono infatti le popolazioni picene a lasciare le prime testimonianze di quello che millenni dopo sarebbe diventato il Rosso Piceno DOC.
Il Rosso Piceno è il vino DOC delle Marche con l’area di coltivazione più ampia: comprende le Provincie di Ancona, Macerata e Ascoli Piceno, dalle colline dell’entroterra fino al mare Adriatico. Sono escluse solo le zone in cui sono prodotte le DOC Rosso Conero e Conero DOCG.

Il disciplinare di produzione prevede la seguente composizione varietale: Montepulciano dal 35% al 70%, Sangiovese dal 30% al 50%, inoltre possono concorrere, da soli o congiuntamente, fino ad un massimo del 15%, tutti i vitigni a bacca rossa raccomandati e/o autorizzati nelle province di coltivazione.
Nella porzione dell’area di produzione più a sud, ossia quella che coincide, a grandi linee, con i territori di tredici Comuni della Provincia di Ascoli Piceno, si è data un’impronta più caratteristica al prodotto finale e una maggiore predisposizione all’invecchiamento. Non a caso solo in questa area è possibile produrre Rosso Piceno Superiore.
Oltre alla tipologia “classica”, e alla tipologia Superiore, il Disciplinare prevede anche il R.P. Novello e quella Sangiovese. La tipologia Rosso Piceno DOC Novello può essere prodotta nella stessa area e con la stessa composizione varietale del Rosso Piceno DOC, naturalmente la caratteristica principale per la sua produzione è la macerazione carbonica.
Il Rosso Piceno Sangiovese DOC, l’ultima nata tra le tipologie del Rosso Piceno DOC, può essere prodotto nella stessa area, ma la composizione prevede il Sangiovese con un minimo dell’85%. Inoltre possono concorrere da soli o congiuntamente fino ad un massimo del 15% tutti i vitigni a bacca rossa raccomandati e/o autorizzati nelle province di coltivazione.
Il Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC può essere ottenuto in un’area più limitata, composta da tredici comuni (i più vocati alla coltivazione dei vitigni Montepulciano e Sangiovese) i cui territori ricadono all’interno della Provincia di Ascoli Piceno. Di questi però solo tre (Offida, Acquaviva Picena e Castorano) hanno tutto il territorio comunale compreso nell’areale produttivo.
Inoltre, il Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC non può essere immesso al consumo in data anteriore al 1 novembre dell’anno successivo a quello di produzione delle uve. Rosso Piceno: the first forty years
1968/2008 - the forty-year history of one of the most important denominations of the Marche region: Rosso Piceno.
Rosso Piceno was accorded DOC status in 1968, but its history goes back to long before that; the wine of the Picene peoples was known before the Romans settled the region. Thanks to early evidence left by the Picenes, we know there was an ancient wine that thousands of years later became Rosso Piceno DOC.
The area occupied by the Rosso Piceno vineyards is the largest DOC area in the Marche and covers the whole provinces of Ancona, Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, from the hilly hinterland to the Adriatic Sea. The only areas not included are those of Rosso Conero DOC and Conero DOCG.
The production specification defines the following grape composition: 35% to 70% Montepulciano, 30% to 50% Sangiovese and 15% maximum, alone or jointly, of any red grape variety recommended and/or authorised in these provinces.
In the southern part of the production area, roughly corresponding to the territories of the thirteen municipalities of the province of Ascoli Piceno, the finished wine has more character and is better suited to ageing. For that reason, Rosso Piceno Superiore can only be produced within that area.
Apart from the Classic and Superiore typologies, the production specification also includes Rosso Piceno Novello and Sangiovese. Rosso Piceno DOC Novello can be produced in the same area using the same grape composition as Rosso Piceno DOC, its main production feature being of course the use of carbonic maceration.
Rosso Piceno Sangiovese DOC, the most recent of the Rosso Piceno DOC typologies, is also produced in this area but consists of a minimum of 85% Sangiovese and a possible maximum of 15%, alone or jointly, of any of the red grape varieties recommended and/or authorised in those provinces.
Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC can only be produced in a more restricted area consisting of the thirteen municipalities within the province of Ascoli Piceno most suitable for growing Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. However only three of these municipalities (Offida, Acquaviva Picena and Castorano) have their whole territories included in the production zone.
Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC cannot be released for consumption before the first of November of the year following the grape production. L'utilizzo della resina a bordo
“La plastica” o, più semplicementè l’”API”.
Questo è il modo con cui venivano chiamati i nostri prodotti per le pavimentazioni.
In realta‚ siamo conosciuti per due marchi: il PLASTIGEL ed il FLEXIGEL.
Fine anni ‘50 - L’inizio dell’attivita‚ dell’API è anche legata alla richiesta fatta al fondatore Mario Magnaghi di replicare un elastomero colato sulle coperte dei dragamine americani in legno che veniva usato per calafatare il ponte. Le cuccette dei marinai stavano proprio sotto la coperta; di qui la necessita‚ di sigillare il ponte al meglio nonchedi rifornire la nave con un prodotto reperibile in loco. Nacque cosi‚ il PLASTIGEL 3220 SIGILLANTE.
In quegli stessi anni il PLASTIGEL comincia a sostituire la pece come prodotto per calafataggio delle coperte in legno, essendo estremamente più pratico, veloce da posare ed efficiente. L’operazione veniva eseguita in navigazione per non entrare in contrasto con la cooperativa dei calafati del porto di Genova non proprio avvezzi al cambio di tecnologia. (Lavori eseguiti sul M/V Franca Costa, Anna Costa, Federico Costa).
1965: È proprio con il PLASTIGEL che prima della crociera di Natale del 1965, l’ing. Piero Costa fa eseguire l’impermeabilizzazione del fasciame all’inglese delle scialuppe di salvataggio della M/V Anna Costa. Il fasciame delle scialuppe restando fuori dall’acqua per tempi prolungati, non era più impermeabile non essendo le doghe a stretto contatto. Inizia cosi‚ la collaborazione tra API e Costa Crociere che prosegue ancora oggi.
1968: Viene iniziato lo studio per una innovativa classe di prodotti a base poliuretanica, adatti alle impermeabilizzazioni calpestabili navali. Vengono proposti in alternativa ai pavimenti cementizi, normalmente usati sulle navi ma con dei limiti sull’elasticita‚ e sul peso noncheai prodotti epossidici, non sempre adatti all’uso.
1971 - Domanda di omologazione al Ministero Difesa Marina del FLEXIGEL per sostituire il rivestimento di ponti di volo per elicotteri. Sostituirà un rivestimento cementizio caratterizzato da rigidità ed elevato peso.
1972: Prima applicazione di FLEXIGEL sulla controplancia in legno della M/N Sises, della Costa Armatori, su richiesta dell’Ing. Piero Costa. L’impermeabilizzazione ha successo e viene estesa al resto dei ponti della nave.
- Prima applicazione del FLEXIGEL sul ponte di volo del C.T Audace c/o Cantieri Navali del Tirreno.
1974: 1978 - Applicazioni varie nel settore mercantile.
1979 - Prima certificazione RINA del sistema resinoso FLEXIGEL che constata la rispondenza dello stesso alle norme per la protezione contro gli incendi dei regolamenti del RINA.
1981: 1994 Prosegue l’applicazione su traghetti, piattaforme offshorè battelli per la navigazione lagunare ecc
1994 - Inizio e sviluppo delle applicazioni nel settore delle nuove navi da crociera e yacht con la formulazione FLEXIGEL DECORO per la realizzazione di pavimenti decorativi
1998: Realizzazione del sistema FLEXIGEL DECORO: TEAK EFFECT in sostituzione delle coperte in legno. Apertura dell’ufficio export

The use of resin on board ships
API flooring products are known as “plastic deck coverings" or more commonly, just “API”.
API is known in particular for two products: PLASTIGEL and FLEXIGEL.
Late 1950s: API was set up, partly as a result of a request made to Mario Magnaghi, the founder, to replicate a poured elastomer used by the US Navy for caulking the wooden decks of American minesweepers. As the personnel sleeping quarters were directly below, it was important to seal the deck as completely as possible using a product locally obtainable in Italy. This was the genesis of our PLASTIGEL 3220 sealant.
1950s: Being much more practical, fast to lay, and efficient, PLASTIGEL began to replace pitch for caulking timber decks. It could be applied while the ship was at sea, which made it possible to avoid the Caulkers' Cooperative in the port of Genoa, who were not exactly accustomed to technological change. Work of this kind was carried out on the vessels Franco Costa, Anna Costa, and Federico Costa.
1965: Before the 1965 end-of-year cruise, Piero Costa used PLASTIGEL to caulk the clinker-built lifeboats of the vessel Anna Costa. Having been out of water for a long time, these lifeboats were no longer watertight and their boards had separated. This was the beginning of a collaboration between API and Costa Crociere, which continues today.
1968: Studies began to develop an innovative new class of polyurethane-based products. suitable for waterproofing the decks of ships. These offered a lightweight and more elastic alternative to the heavy cementitious floorings normally used until then.
1971: FLEXIGEL was submitted to the Italian Naval Ministry for certification as an approved replacement membrane for helicopter flight decks. This replaced a cementitious membrane that was more rigid and very heavy.
1972: At the request of Piero Costa, FLEXIGEL was applied for the first time to the wooden upper deck of the vessel Sises, owned by Costa Armatori. This was successful and was extended to the other decks of the ship.
1972: The first application of FLEXIGEL on the flight deck of the MTB Audace in the shipyards of Cantieri Navali del Tirreno.
1974-1978: Various applications in the mercantile field.
1979: The first certification by RINA (Italy’s international certification body) of API’s resinous FLEXIGEL system.This confirmed that the product was in conformity with RINA regulations for protection against fire.
1981-1994: Applications continued on ferries, offshore platforms, boats for lagoon navigation, etc.
1994: Commencement and development of new applications in the field of the new cruise ships and yachts beginning with the FLEXIGEL DECORO formulation, used for preparing decorated decking.
1998: Introduction of the FLEXIGEL DECORO TEAK EFFECT system as a substitute for wood decks. Export office opened.
2000 2007: Introduction of the FLEXIGEL DECORO SOFT system. Acoustic studies carried out to measure the reduction of transmitted impact noise using VISCOGEL. Completion of sports facilities. Introduction of the FLEXIGEL TILE EFFECT system. Use of FLEXISECURIT in kitchens as a replacement for tiled floors. Questi strumenti di analisi e di sintesi, completati dalle ricerche di archivio e dalla consultazione dei manuali di architettura pratica, prezziari e studi recentemente elaborati sulle tecniche costruttive tradizionali, producono i primi elementi per la messa a punto di un repertorio, aperto e aggiornabile nel tempo, delle tecniche pre-moderne riferite ai due centri analizzati, repertorio che oltre a costituire una documentazione di pratica utilità per sanare il gap di conoscenza dei procedimenti costruttivi e dei meccanismi di funzionamento del cantiere antico, consente una lettura puntuale della cultura materiale, suggerisce spunti per il progetto e concorre ad individuare il grado di trasformabilità.

These analytical and synthesising tools, supplemented by archival research, and consulting recently published practical architecture manuals on traditional building methods and their costs, enabled us to produce the initial elements for developing a repertory of pre-modern techniques in the two settlements; this repertory remains open and upgradeable over time. As well as providing documentation of practical utility that closes a gap in our knowledge of construction procedures and working methods on the historic building site, it makes possible a detailed reading of the material culture of these two settlements, indicating possible starting points for designing new work and helping to identify the extent to which the existing fabric might be re- adapted.
Although in conservation studies of villages dispersed throughout the various homogeneous areas of the Abruzzo, the components of their built fabric have often been the least investigated aspect, knowledge of them has an immediate and direct operational impact. In a series of early sketches the structure of the gutter, designed to project outwards for about 3m. (nearly 10'0") without support, consists of two timber planks arranged in a V and supported by a T-section so as to form a "stork's beak" profile. I am specialised in translating from Italian (in which I am 100% fluent as a working language) to English, my native language.

I have been working in the professional and business world, between Italy and the UK, for over 20 years, and as part of that work, translating documents dealing with contractual, technical, cultural and design matters relating to architecture, construction, industrial design and associated areas.
I regularly translate a variety of documents, which have recently included:
- the full technical specification for a photvoltaic generating station
- major books on the work of important architects and designers (Gio Ponti, Carlo Mollino, Tadao Ando)
- zippy but intelligent articles for up-market interior decoration and design magazines
- a surveyor’s report about a damp house in the Abruzzo
- a presentation book about the history of ocean liners, for an industrial firm, as part of their PR strategy
- a long interview with a major Italian art critic, published in a Spanish design magazine
- a technical/historical report on the urban structure of medieval villages in southern Italy
- etc.
My business-to-business approach keeps me focussed on the needs of that other business that commissioned the translation I’m working on. I’m always passionately interested in what I’m translating and as I work, I research that particular field.
I'm always aware that a big contract might depend on the quality of my translation of a product description; someone’s career may take off because I have done a good translation of an article about their work; my translations for luxury magazines will be read by movie stars; someone may operate a dangerous piece of machinery using a manual I have translated.
I like to feel that my work as a translator is part of the real world.
