SERIE « SKY AGARICS »
Acrylique et pastel à l’huile sur toile, 2007-8
Voici un monde étrange, comme de l’autre côté du miroir, où tout se reflète d’une façon peu familière. Ici on regarde le quotidien, mais on le voit comme pour la première fois.
Pour qu’on reste éveillé, il faut chercher des rencontres avec l’extraordinaire, mais l’extraordinaire réel. Dans le conte russe L’oiseau de feu, le héros empêche le sommeil de l’accabler pendant une nuit de veille en se lavant souvent les yeux de rosée, et il est étonné par ce qu’il voit ! On doit suivre son exemple. Dans la pseudo-réalité, de plus en plus banale, que devient la vie moderne, on est en train de filer de l’or en paille.
Un jour je regardais sur l’odinateur des photos de beaux champignons, surtout des amanites tue-mouche. Juste pour m’amuser j’ai inversé les couleurs. J’ai regardé bouche bée ce qui luisait sur l’écran devant moi. Le chapeau de champignon rouge tacheté de blanc si familier était transformé en boule de bleu ciel aux taches noires. Les herbes autour du pied étaient en nuances de mauve et de rose, et les ombres devenues des éclats de lumière - un paysage étrange et féerique. C’est ainsi qu’est arrivée l’idée des Sky Agarics [en Anglais l’amanite tue-mouche s’appelle fly agaric, et sky veut dire ciel].
J’ai déjà utilisé la technologie de photo numérique et de l’informatique pour regarder mes œuvres en cours. Sur les photos négatives je vois facilement les couleurs qui dominent trop ou qui manquent. Utiliser une photo négative comme point de départ, et peindre aux couleurs complémentaires me semblaient une exploration étrange et intéressante, mais pour autant tout à fait logique comme étape suivante.
La technique de peinture approche de l’aquarelle, lumineuse et légère, mais en sens inverse. Le pastel à l’huile rend le chapeau du champignon de façon intense, qui le fait saillir du fond malgré sa teinte bleutée. L’image du champignon bleu turquoise, comme une boule de ciel, suffisait en elle-même, mais j’étais toujours consciente qu’une fois transformée en négatif, chaque tache de couleur deviendrait un éclat de lumière. Tout commence dans l’obscurité, et la peinture, en s’assombrissant, s’illumine pour devenir une toile virtuelle où le champignon réel se retrouve comme par un numéro de fumée et de miroirs.
LA CARTE DES ANIMAUX

C’est une carte, mais peu normale :
• Les chemins et habitations des gens sont à peine visibles.
• Les cours d’eau sont en brun plutôt qu’en bleu
• Le nord n’est pas indiqué (en fait, c’est vers la droite), ni les noms des lieux – les animaux n’en ont pas besoin. Ce terrain est connu d’une autre façon.
La carte représente mes observations de traces sur la neige pendant une semaine. Ce n’est pas une étude scientifique (quoique – j’ai observé, j’ai noté, sans a priori : démarche classique de la vraie science); j’ai noté les traces qui ont suivi ou croisé les miennes jusqu’à perte de vue. Alors ce sont les animaux qui ont « dessiné » les motifs qu’on voit brodés. Les sangliers dominent cette carte ainsi que le terrain. Les chevreuils ne sont qu’entrevus ici et là, et le renard passe toujours son chemin ...
Par endroits les animaux suivent encore les limites d’anciennes parcelles. Est-ce que nos ancêtres les ont tracées selon les pistes traditionnelles des animaux?

This is a strange world, like on the other side of the mirror, where all is reflected in an unfamiliar way. Here one looks upon everyday things, but as if seeing them for the first time.
In order to remain awake, one needs to seek out encounters with the extraordinary, but an extraordinary that is real. In the russian folk tale The Firebird, the hero keeps sleep at bay during a night of vigil by washing his eyes frequently with dew, and he is then astonished by what he sees! We would do well to follow his example. In the increasingly banal pseudo-reality that our modern life has become, we are in the process of spinning gold into straw.
One day I was looking at some lovely mushroom photographs on the computer, and fly agarics in particular. Just for fun I inverted the colours. I stared open-mouthed at what glowed before me on the screen. The familiar red cap spotted with white was transformed into a ball of sky blue with black spots. The grass around the stalk was in shades of mauve and pink, and the shadows had become splashes of light – a strange and enchanted landscape. From this developed the idea of the Sky Agarics.
I had already used digital photo and computer technology to look at work in progress. On the negatives I can see more easily which colours dominate too much or are lacking. To use a photo negative as the starting point, and paint in complementary colours struck me as a strange and interesting experiment, but quite logical as the next step.
The painting technique is close to watercolour, luminous and light, but in reverse. The oil pastel renders the mushroom cap with intensity, which makes it advance out of the background in spite of its bluish tint. The image of the turquoise mushroom, like a ball of sky, was sufficient in itself, but I was always conscious that once transformed into a negative, each area of colour would become a patch of light. Everything starts in darkness, and the painting, as it develops, lights up to become a virtual painting where the real mushroom is rediscovered as if by some trick of smoke and mirrors.
ANIMAL MAP

It’s a map, but far from normal:
• Lanes and human habitations are barely visible (pale blue).
• Water courses are peaty brown rather than blue.
• North is not indicated (in fact it’s to the right), nor are the place names – the animals have no need. The land is known in a different fashion.
The map shows my observations of tracks in the snow during one week. It is not a scientific study (but then again: I observed, I noted, without preconception – the classic method of true science); I noted the tracks which followed or crossed my own until out of sight. So it is the animals who “drew” the patterns that one sees embroidered. The wild boar dominate the map as they do on the ground. Deer are glimpsed here and there, the fox continues on his way…
In places the animals still follow the old field boundaries. Could it be that our ancestors laid them out according to the traditional paths of the animals?

Lifeless as a lead pipe

between the wheels
we turn
in time to see the white car swerve

you cannot bruise his heel.
Never-devil
so-called beguiler
and instigator of the Fall
your only sin to remind Woman

all women know the curse of Eve
which now you spit from shattered lungs
your eye aflame, betrayed

And finding no fig-leaves to hand

BELA DOMNA - les échos des troubadours dans l'amour courtois et le culte de la vierge Marie.
La Domna de l'amour courtois était la Dame idéalisée et puissante. Adorée, louée et servie d'une dévotion totale, en elle la quête de l'être humain s'était accomplie.
La « Petite Renaissance » du XIIe siècle voyait la grande floraison des troubadours, souvent issues de familles nobles, et de la poésie lyrique en Occitan. Suite aux croisades contre les Cathares en début du XIIIe siècle, le pouvoir de la noblesse occitane - et des femmes - s'affaiblissait sous le controle du roi de France et de l'église. L'influence des troubadours se répandait au nord par les trouvères, en Espagne et en Italie, mais leur Domna n'était plus accessible. Au cours du siècle, elle s'est identifiée de plus en plus avec la Vierge Marie, dont le culte était en pleine essor. La rose d'amour devint la rose mystique.
Malgré l'influence du nord, où la Vierge paraissait souvent en guise de fille paysanne d'une humanité chaleureuse, dans les pays d'Oc elle restait plutôt majestueuse, l'echo des anciennes déesses. Dans les statues des Vierges en majesté, typiquement auvergnates, on voit encore les reflets, quoique ternis, de la Domna suprême.

The Domna of courtly love was the Lady, idealised and powerful. Adored, praised and served with total devotion, in her the quest of the human being was accomplished.
The “Little Renaissance” of the 12th century saw the great flowering of the troubadours, often from noble families, and of Occitan lyrical poetry. Following the crusades against the Cathars in the early 13th century, the power of the Occitan nobility - and of women – declined under the control of the king of France and of the church. The influence of the troubadours spread northwards with the trouvères, into Spain and Italy, but their Domna was no longer accessible. Over the course of the century she was increasingly identified with the Virgin Mary, whose cult was in full bloom. The rose of love became the mystic rose.
Despite the influence of the north, where the Virgin often appeared in the guise of a warmly human peasant girl, in Occitan lands she remained rather more majestic, the echo of ancient goddesses. In statues of the Virgin in majesty, typical of the Auvergne, one can still see the reflection, albeit somewhat dulled, of the supreme Domna. |
