The J2EE platform is a standard for developing enterprise-class mission-critical applications that can accommodate the 24 × 7 high-performance needs of a globally diverse organization. J2EE is an open standards–based set of APIs overseen by Sun Microsystems. Although Sun produces a reference implementation for the J2EE standard, J2EE applications can be run on any server platform that adheres to the J2EE APIs, such as Oracle Application Server 10g.
• Component based: The J2EE platform defines a set of connected components. Ideally, standards-compliant components can be interchanged without compromising the integrity of the platform. Customers can now choose components from different manufacturers, instead of being limited to the offerings of one particular vendor.
• Multitiered: The J2EE platform is divided into multiple tiers. This functional abstraction promotes better design and reuse of components and allows for scaling of each tier to meet the needs of the application.
• Enterprise class: J2EE uses Java—Write Once, Run Anywhere. Java’s portability allows an enterprise to deploy an application to different platforms dispersed throughout the organization. The J2EE platform is designed to support scalable and highly available application environments required by mission-critical applications and large enterprises. With the recent addition of Web services to the J2EE architecture, J2EE now provides for even easier integration with legacy applications.
