| Translation - English Lighting
The most popular light bulbs are incandescent bulbs, however they are very inefficient, as they transform 90% of the power consumed into heat, and only 10% into light. Due to this, it is recommended to use compact fluorescent lamps, which serve ten times longer and reduce the power consumption by a third. However, one must remember that they contain mercury, so these lamps must not be thrown out with domestic waste – they should be delivered to a hazardous waste collection point for recycling.
Innovative solutions in design and construction
A green construction viewpoint to future development entails continuous improvement of technological solutions to better the energy-efficiency, heating and ventilation systems and other aspects of house construction. However, the latest technology is not an end in itself, but rather a means to achieve improvements. The selection of equipment and materials is made after thorough calculations, by developing a solution best-suited for the specific case.
Preference should be given to local, natural materials that are renewable or recyclable (or both) – wood, other biomass products, clay, and similar. | | Latvian to English: About the city of Riga | Source text - Latvian Pilsētā pie Daugavas vakara vēji spēlējas ar jasmīnu un ceriņu smaržu kā to darījuši jau no 1201. gada, kad tika dibināta Rīga. Marža kļūst jo spēcīgāka, tuvojoties naktij un tās vīraks apņem katru vēlīnu gājēju, katru ceļinieku, liekot viņam palēnināt gaitu un ieklausīties neparastās skaņās… Nakts paver teiksmu plīvuru… Tuvojas pusnakts stunda, to apliecina pulkstenis, skaļi nositot divpadsmit reizes, un pilsēta sastingst pirms nakts miera…
| Translation - English In the city near River Daugava, the evening breeze is toying with the scent of jasmines and lilacs, as it has been ever since 1201, when Riga was founded. The aroma grows ever stronger with the approaching night, and its incense envelops every late walker, every traveller, making them slow their pace and listen in to curious sounds. The night opens a veil of myth… The midnight hour approaches, acknowledged by the clock tower with twelve long rings of bell, and the city freezes before the night’s repose. Suddenly, wind rustles over the towers of Riga, the leaves of lime trees tremble, and a soft, gentle and alluring siren’s voice is heard from Daugava:
“Good evening, traveller! Is Riga ready?”
Then, venerable guest, you must confidently reply: “No, Riga is not ready yet! Riga is still growing!”
For the inquiring one is the cunning river Mermaid, who tries to lure out the answer that Riga is ready. However, as soon as these words will be spoken out loud, the city will vanish in the river depth!
“Hey, Mermaid! You’re playing tricks again! Leave the visitors in peace in my domain!” a tremendous man speaks up from the bank, unhurriedly lighting a lantern and dispersing the darkness of night.
He is Great Christophe, who once carried a small weeping boy over Daugava. The child had disappeared the next morning, but in his place was a heap of gold coins! That money was used to build Riga.
Great Christophe shakes off the memories, and waves a greeting to a knight standing in guard at a magnificent building nearby:
“Well-met, Roland! Are your boys having a feast again?”
But Knight Roland remains unmoving in the middle of Town Hall Square; he smiles, and casts a glance in the direction of the splendid building. Yes, tonight there is a feast again at the House of the Blackheads – there, as is common in a Hansa city, young, unwed traders and sea captains are celebrating. |
