Non conosciamo quale sia il periodo nel quale si è instaurato il costume di utilizzare prigionieri
e schiavi per testimoniare la memoria dei defunti o per dei ludi gladiatori. Sappiamo però come nel mondo Etrusco fosse molto sentita l’usanza di far combattere di fronte ad un pubblico degli esseri umani fino alla loro morte: sia per eseguire pubblicamente sentenze emesse dalle autorità giudiziarie, che per celebrare solennità di tipo religioso o riti funebri. Poco sappiamo anche della consuetudine di attuare sacrifici umani veri e propri. Alcuni autori ritengono che esista un momento di connessione tra celebrazioni Etrusche rappresentate, ad esempio, nelle tombe di Tarquinia del VI secolo a.C. e i futuri munera. In quelle pitture parietali, in maniera esplicita , viene evidenziata una liturgia che sembra essere gestita da un personaggio mascherato e identificato con il nome di “Phersu”. Il sacerdote giudice, genera uno stretto legame tra la lotta dell’uomo destinato al sacrificio e la morte. Indossa una maschera con barba ed un cappello in cuoio di tipo orientale e tiene al guinzaglio un cane che azzanna il probabile immolando. Quest’uomo,
probabilmente un condannato, o un atleta, ha il capo chiuso in un sacco e, per difendersi,
tiene stretta nella mano una clava. Il prigioniero è ferito e sanguina, mentre la corda del cane lo avvinghia pericolosamente. Sembra un gioco perverso nel quale si accetta l’ ipotesi che questo predestinato possa salvarsi, anticipando di molto la filosofia crudele dei giochi gladiatori (damnatio ad bestias), dalla fortuna spesso volutamente incerta e al fine di alimentare l’attesa del pubblico. Phersu potrebbe riprodurre in questo caso l’effigie di Caronte, una figura degli Inferi, o un personaggio sanguinario o un giudice di morte, o più semplicemente l’arbitro senza volto di un evento. Questo tipo di dipinti sono molto frequenti, e in periodi successivi, troviamo anche raffigurazioni di scontri tra uomini, che sembrano legarsi strettamente ai duelli gladiatori. Ad esempio negli affreschi di una tomba di Paestum, dove sono riconoscibili guerrieri seminudi con elmo corinzio e scudo rotondo da oplita si affrontano in una lotta all’ultimo sangue.

We do not know when the use of slave prisoners became commonplace to honour the memory of the dead or in gladiatorial games. We do know, however, that in the Etruscan world it was very common to make human beings fight to the death before a crowd. This was both to publicly carry out sentences that had been handed down by the judicial authorities and to celebrate religious holidays or funeral rites. We also know very little about the customs surrounding actual human sacrifices. Some authors believe that there is a link between Etruscan celebrations as represented, for example, in the tombs at Tarquinia dating from the 6th century BC and the munera that followed. These wall paintings clearly show a ceremony which appears to be led by a masked figure identified as ‘Phersu’. This figure of priest and judge creates a close connection between the struggle of the man destined to be sacrificed and death. He is wearing a mask with a beard and a leather, oriental style cap and holding a rope attached to a dog which is attacking the probable sacrifice victim. The victim, who is probably a condemned man or an athlete, has a sack over his head. He is holding a club to defend himself. He is wounded and bleeding, and the rope is cutting into him dangerously. It seems a perverse game where it is accepted that the doomed man might save himself from his fate which was often left uncertain to fuel the public’s interest, thereby substantially pre-empting the cruel philosophy of the gladiatorial games (damnatio ad bestias). Here Phersu could be compared to Charon, a character from hell, or a bloodthirsty character, a judge over death or, more simply, a faceless judge at an event. This type of painting is very common and similar examples can be found from later periods showing men fighting, which would seem very closely connected to gladiatorial contests. They can be seen in the frescoes in a tomb at Paestum, for example, where semi-naked warriors with Corinthian helmets and round hoplite shields fight to the death. | Italian to English: Extract from a website for an 'agriturismo'

L’edificio realizzato negli anni 50 e ristrutturato di recente è composto da un piano terra dove si trovano la cucina,il punto ristoro con la capienza di 50 posti a sedere, un grande portico in legno adibito nel periodo estivo a punto ristoro, e all’esterno un giardino con i giochi per bambini.
Nel piano superiore ci sono gli alloggi , una piccola cucina a disposizione degli ospiti, una sala comune con camino e angolo lettura ( con libri e riviste utili per organizzare il periodo di vacanza) ed un’ampia terrazza con vista sul massiccio della Majella.
Inoltre abbiamo da poco realizzato una nuova ala con tre camere dette CAMERE MAJELLA poste al piano terra, quindi facilmente accessibili, provviste di bagno interno e T.V. in camera. Una di queste camere è inoltre attrezzata per ospitare i portatori di handicap.
All’esterno dell’Azienda è presente un campo da calcetto e da tennis, un tavolo da ping pong, un calciobalilla e alcune biciclette.

The recently renovated structure was built in the 1950s. On the ground floor is the kitchen, the restaurant, which can seat up to fifty people, and a large covered terrace, ideal for summer dining, that looks onto the garden and childrens’ play area.
The rooms are on the first floor along with a small kitchen which guests are welcome to use, a common room with a fireplace and reading area (with useful books and magazines for planning day trips) and a large terrace with wonderful views over the Majella massif.
Recently we have added a new wing with three further rooms known as the ‘Camere Majella’ (‘Majella Rooms’). They are on the ground floor and are therefore easily accessible. They all have en-suite facilities and televisions and one of them is fully equipped for disabled guests.
In the grounds we have a five-a-side football pitch/tennis court, table tennis table, table football and bikes for you to use.
