James Naismith
James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861. Thirty years later he was teaching at a college in the United States. The college was in Massachusetts, where winters are cold and long. Naismith wanted to think of a new sport his students could play indoors. He wanted the sport to be full of action. He also wanted his students to have to use skill—and not simply have to be strong.
Naismith remembered a game he had played at school. The game was called “Duck on a Rock.” An object was placed on a high, large rock. The object was called a “duck.” Players tossed small rocks in the air to try to knock off the “duck.”
He thought that players in his new sport could run indoors and throw a ball, instead of a rock, in the air. They would not try to hit an object placed on a rock. Instead, they would try to make the ball go in a basket above their heads.
The First Basketball Game
Naismith divided his 18 students into two teams. He taught them the 13 rules he had made up for the sport.
There was a railing around the room where the students would play the new sport. The railing was ten feet high. A peach basket was nailed onto the railing at both ends of the room. These were the first basketball goals!
The first basketball game took place. The final score was 1–0. After a player made that one goal, the game had to stop for a few minutes. Someone had to climb a ladder and get the ball out of the basket!
More and More People Play Basketball
Those 18 men who played the first basketball game became teachers. Most of them were Americans. A few of them were from other countries. Later, all of them taught the new sport to their own students. Those students taught others. Soon many people were playing basketball in the United States and other countries.
