The inferior vena cava filter was first invented as a prophylactic against PE in 19672, but with the introduction in 1984 of the Greenfield filter, which could be inserted transcutaneously, permanent indwelling filters became widely used3. However, in 1998, Decousus et al conducted randomized trials related to the placement of permanent indwelling filters and announced that while they helped prevent PE in the short term, they increased the rate of re-occurrence of DVT over the long term4. | More Less | | HJG glossary | | Years of translation experience: 25.
