The Raise the Bar school program is designed to dramatically increase the level of physical activity that our students receive through the delivery of quality, comprehensive intramural programs.
It is also very important to understand that intramural programs have applications beyond increasing physical activity levels and the health of our kids. Intramural programs can play a prominent role by getting kids – many of them high risk – more engaged in the school community. Here is a list of some of these benefits.
At the bottom of this page is a PDF file that provides a sample intramural proposal form for teachers to use when submitting a plan to run intramurals at their school. Combined with the benefits listing here, teachers will have plenty of evidence to support their desire to implement an intramural program at their school.
Intramurals provide an opportunity for non–athletic students to become involved in sport and physical activity.
In general, inter-school teams at both the elementary and secondary school level have top priority in terms of funding, time and resources. It must be understood that the majority of our students are not athletic – so the question begs – ‘what do we have in place for these students to participate in?’ Extra–curricular opportunities should not be limited solely to those students who have the previous experience, skills or financial means to participate. Women are thus generally viewed as sexual beings. Whatever women do, they are first and foremost perceived as enticing bodies. They and their bodies seem to have only a sexual dimension. Working in the male public space is generally perceived as an erotic invasion. The male body, although sexual in the presence of a female body, has several dimensions, for instance, in the economic or political field. Women, in contrast, even if they do not move and dance, but simply walk or work in the male space, are perceived as sexual beings. Even if they use their bodies as productive instruments, they are perceived as sexual bodies.
This construction of gender and the body pertains to all Egyptian women. Female entertainers differ from "decent" women because they publicly use their bodies instead of hiding their shame as much as possible. They publicly employ the power of their bodies. Instead of using their feminine powers in the licit context of marriage, they tempt male customers in public. They thus employ the sexuality of their bodies out of wedlock, which is a grave sin.
Entertainment is a particular sensitive field to work in for women because the body is focal. Female performances are inevitably tantalizing. As mentioned above, in strict religious opinion, female singers are also haram. Listening to the voice of women can evoke tempting images. Especially since female singers are not only audible but also visible, the bodily dimension of their performance has become more prominent. Dancing, however, is quintessential a bodily expression. Dancing is thus by definition a sexual activity. Unlike, for instance, actresses, dancers not only put their sexuality on stage but they even move their sexual bodies. Moving sexual bodies in public, in exchange for money, is almost identical to prostitution.

Les femmes sont donc généralement perçues comme des êtres sexuels. Peu importe ce qu’elles font, elles sont d’abord et avant tout perçues comme des corps prêts à séduire. Les femmes et leurs corps semblent ne posséder qu'une dimension sexuelle. Le travail dans l’espace public masculin est généralement perçu comme une invasion sexuelle. Le corps de l’homme, bien que sexuel en présence du corps d’une femme, possède plusieurs dimensions, dans les domaines économique et politique, par exemple. La femme, quant à elle, même si elle ne bouge pas ou elle ne danse pas, même si elle ne fait que marcher ou travailler dans l'espace masculin, est perçue comme un être sexuel. En d’autres mots, elles se servent de la sexualité de leur corps hors des liens du mariage, ce qui est un péché grave.
Le spectacle est un domaine d’emploi particulièrement délicat pour les femmes, car leur corps en est alors le point central. Leurs numéros sont forcément aguichants. Comme mentionné précédemment, selon la doctrine religieuse stricte, les chanteuses sont également haram. Écouter la voix d’une femme peut évoquer des images séduisantes. Puisqu’il est possible d’écouter une chanteuse et surtout de la voir, la dimension corporelle de leur spectacle a pris de l’importance. Toutefois, la danse représente la quintessence de l'expression corporelle. La danse est donc par définition une activité sexuelle. À l’opposé des actrices, par exemple, non seulement les danseuses exhibent-elles leur sexualité sur la scène, mais elles bougent également leur corps sexuel. Bouger un corps sexuel en public contre rémunération est presque synonyme de prostitution. |
