Forbidden / Forbidding Words

Welcome to this special double issue of Transcript dedicated to the topic of forbidden and forbidding words.
A few words of introduction are necessary to place this project in context, particularly for our French and English-speaking readers. 'Verbotene Worte' (literally: Forbidden Words) is an informal literary network which was initiated in Germany by the Bulgarian-German poet Tzveta Sofronieva. In her introductory essay to the topic, '(m)other words', which is featured in this issue, Tzveta Sofronieva explains how her interest in the cultural burden borne by certain words was first sparked by a 1995-96 discussion with her German translator about one of her poems: 'Rodina' (homeland). A literal translation of the Bulgarian title into German proved problematic: the word 'Heimat', after all, had implications unique to the German historical context. The poem eventually received the title 'Gefangen im Licht' ('Caught in Light'); the light in question is that cast by language, in which the poet feels herself trapped. 'Verbotene Worte' grew out of this discussion. Over the past twelve years it has brought together writers, visual artists and academics from the length and breadth of Europe and beyond, resulting in numerous readings and discussions, and in the publication of a German language anthology entitled Verbotene Worte (Biblion: 2005), which looked at issues of linguistic memory and the misunderstandings that can occur during communication between different cultures.
Today, in 2007, the German word 'Heimat' may be undergoing a process of rehabilitation as Germany shows signs of developing a 'positive patriotism' in the aftermath of its 2006 hosting of the World Cup. The English word 'homeland', on the other hand, is weighed down as never before by the connotations of its contemporary usage in the USA. For this reason we feature two American writers in this issue (in the English edition only). This is a break with tradition for Transcript, but an appropriate inclusion given the nature of this special issue.
'Forbidden / Forbidding Words' is not confined to an exploration of linguistic memory and taboo, however, but also investigates the insights into language offered by bi- and multi-lingualism. A Transcript reading and discussion held at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin on March 30, 2007, examined the relationship between multilingualism and the act of reflecting upon the burdens carried by language. One of the positions put forward was that knowledge of another language or languages makes one more aware of what can and cannot be said, of the gaps within a language and the gaps between different languages. Both Odile Kennel's novella Wimpernflug / Mon nom dans les nuages (French and German editions only), the story of a nine year old girl growing up in a French-German bilingual household, and Yoko Tawada's tale of programming the lexis of a robo-poet in Ein Brief an Olympia / Lettre à Olympia (currently French and German editions only) are excellent examples of how the dual focal points of the project feed into one another.

Bienvenue dans ce numéro spécial de Transcript consacré à ‘Mots défendus / Mots défendant’.
Quelques mots d’introduction sont nécessaires pour replacer ce projet dans son contexte, en particulier pour nos lecteurs francophones et anglophones. ‘Verbotene Worte’, littéralement « Mots interdits », est un réseau littéraire non-officiel créé en Allemagne à l’initiative de Tzveta Sofronieva, poète bulgare désormais établie en Allemagne. Dans ‘Au-delà de la langue, autres mots, autres lieux’, essai liminaire sur le sujet que vous trouverez dans ce numéro, Tzveta Sofronieva raconte comment son intérêt pour le lourd héritage culturel que certains mots véhiculent a été suscité pour la première fois lors d’une discussion en 1995-96 avec le traducteur allemand de son poème ‘Rodina’ (patrie). Une traduction du titre bulgare en allemand posait problème : le mot ‘Heimat’, en effet, évoque spécifiquement le contexte historique allemand. Au final, le poème fut intitulé ‘Gefangen im Licht‘ (‘Prisonnière de la lumière’) ; la lumière en question est celle jetée par le langage et dans laquelle la poète se sent prise au piège. ‘Verbotene Worte’ est né de cette discussion. Au cours des douze dernières années, ce réseau a rassemblé des écrivains, des plasticiens et des universitaires des quatre coins de l’Europe et même au-delà ; de nombreuses lectures et discussions en ont découlé ainsi que la publication en allemand d’une anthologie intitulée Verbotene Worte (Biblion: 2005). Cet ouvrage examine les questions de la mémoire linguistique ainsi que les malentendus qui peuvent surgir lorsque des personnes de cultures différentes se rencontrent.
Aujourd’hui, en 2007, le mot allemand « Heimat » semble être sur la voie de la réhabilitation en Allemagne comme le prouvent les manifestations de « patriotisme positif » qui ont suivi l’organisation de la Coupe du Monde de Football de 2006. Le mot anglais « homeland », par contre, souffre comme jamais des connotations issues de l’usage qui en est fait actuellement aux Etats-Unis. C’est pour cela que nous présentons deux écrivains américains dans ce numéro (uniquement dans l’édition anglaise). Si Transcript rompt ici avec la tradition, c’est parce que cette inclusion est justifiée par la nature même de ce numéro spécial.
‘Verbotene Worte’ ne se limite cependant pas à une exploration des tabous et de la mémoire linguistiques ; il étudie aussi les connaissances sur le langage qu’apporte le bilinguisme ou le multilinguisme. Le 30 mars 2007, Transcript organisa à l’Institut Culturel Bulgare de Berlin une lecture de Verbotene Worte suivie d’une discussion au cours de laquelle la relation entre le multilinguisme et la réflexion sur les connotations qui pèsent sur le langage fut examinée. Une des positions avancées à cette occasion est celle selon laquelle la connaissance d’une ou plusieurs langues nous aide à prendre davantage conscience de ce qui peut ou ne peut pas être dit, des manques au sein d’une langue et de l’absence d’équivalents entre différentes langues. Le court roman d’Odile Kennel, Mon nom dans les nuages (uniquement dans les éditions française et allemande), histoire d’une fillette de neuf ans qui grandit dans un foyer bilingue français-allemand et le conte d’Yoko Tawada, Lettre à Olympia, qui raconte la programmation du dictionnaire d’un robot-poète, illustrent parfaitement tous les deux la manière dont les doubles centres d’intérêt de ‘Verbotene Worte’ se nourrissent l’un et l’autre.
