Yo no lo tengo ni cuento tampoco con ese invalorable sentido común a la mayoría de los humanos para orientarse en las calles y las rutas o en parajes nunca vistos tanto como en aquellos en donde apenas se estuvo una única vez. Yo me pierdo irremediablemente cuando me alejo de los circuitos habituales. Privado del don de la ubicación, incapaz de abstraer, de discernir y calcular donde tanta falta hace, los sitios que no frecuento son para mí inalcanzables y a ellos jamás llegaría si alguien no me condujese o no me dejara guiar por los que entienden. Sujeto fatalmente a mi pobre percepción, no sé ir, no sé volver y soy incapaz de remontar mi invalidez. No puedo, no aprendo, no entiendo y nada me dice un plano acerca de mi ubicación. No tengo brújula interna ni don alguno de representación y en cuanto a los puntos cardinales jamás supe dónde están. Todo esto, claro, favorece mi propensión a la inmovilidad. Io, invece, sono del tutto privo di questo inestimabile dono che la maggior parte degli esseri umani usa per orientarsi fra strade, percorsi o in luoghi mai visti prima o visitati magari un’unica volta. Una piccola modifica di rotta rispetto ai percorsi che sono solito fare equivale automaticamente a perdermi. Privo del senso dello spazio, incapace di operare astrazioni, differenziazioni e calcoli proprio dove più servirebbe, i posti che non frequento sono per me irraggiungibili e non potrei mai arrivarvi se non mi ci portasse qualcuno o non mi guidasse chi ne sa più di me. Vittima senza scampo della mia percezione fallace, non sono in grado di andare, tornare nè tantomeno superare il mio handicap. Non ci riesco, non imparo, non capisco e consultare una mappa per localizzare il punto in cui mi trovo è un’operazione vana. La mia bussola biologica è inesistente e così anche la seppur minima capacità di rappresentazione; in quanto ai punti cardinali, poi, non ho mai saputo dove fossero. È ovvio che tutto ciò alimenta la mia indole sedentaria: per non correre il rischio di perdermi, cerco di non allontanarmi dai luoghi a me noti. Sono poche le cose che mi spingono a lasciare il mio quartiere e faccio di tutto perchè la mia vita sociale non esca dai suoi confini. Lungi da me qualsiasi spirito esplorativo. Confondo le direzioni e nella mia mente colloco immancabilmente a sinistra ciò che invece si trovava a destra: ogni volta che parcheggio l’auto lontano da casa, quando vi faccio ritorno la cerco sul lato opposto a quello in cui si trova e in tal modo perdo un sacco di tempo a risolvere quello che mai avrebbe dovuto trasformarsi in problema.

El fútbol soporta una maldición que a la vez es la salvación de jugadores, entrenadores y forofos compungidos por una derrota. Se trata de una actividad en la que no basta con ganar, sino que hay que ganar siempre, en cada temporada, en cada torneo, en cada partido. Un escritor, un arquitecto, un músico pueden sestear un poco tras haber hecho una gran novela, un maravilloso edificio, un disco inolvidable. Pueden no hacer nada durante un tiempo o hacer algo menor. Entre los primeros, que son los que más conozco, los hay que han pasado a ser buenos por decreto y hasta el fin de sus días gracias a una sola obra estimable escrita cincuenta años atrás. En el fútbol, por el contrario, no caben el descanso ni el divertimento, de poco sirve tener un extraordinario palmarés histórico o haber conquistado un título el año anterior. No se considera nunca que ya se ha cumplido, sino que se exige (y los propios jugadores se lo exigen a sí mismos) ganar el siguiente encuentro también, como si se empezara desde cero siempre, analogía del resultado inicial de todo partido. A diferencia de otras actividades de la vida, en el deporte (pero sobre todo en el fútbol) no se acumula ni atesora nada, pese a las salas de trofeos y a las estadísticas cada vez más apreciadas. Haber sido ayer el mejor no cuenta ya hoy, no digamos mañana. La alegría pasada no puede hacer nada contra la angustia presente, aquí no existe la compensación del recuerdo, ni la satisfacción por lo ya alcanzado, ni por supuesto el agradecimiento del público por el contento procurado hace dos semanas. Tampoco, por tanto, existen durante mucho tiempo la pena ni la indignación, que de un día para otro pueden verse sustituidas por la euforia y la santificación. Di contro, nel calcio non sono di casa nè il riposo nè il divertimento ed è inutile perfino vantare uno straordinario palmarès storico o aver conquistato un titolo appena l’anno prima. Il successo non viene mai considerato come già acquisito, al contrario si pretende – e sono gli stessi giocatori a pretenderlo da sè stessi – di vincere anche l’incontro successivo, come se ogni volta si ricominciasse da zero, che, guarda caso, è proprio il punteggio iniziale di ogni partita. Al contrario di ciò che accade in altre attività della vita, nello sport – ma soprattutto nel calcio – niente viene accumulato o immagazzinato, ad onta delle stanze piene di trofei e delle statistiche sempre più tenute in conto. About two thirds of the Earth's surface lies beneath the oceans. Before the 19th century, the depths of the open ocean were largely a matter of speculation, and most people thought that the ocean floor was relatively flat and featureless. However, as early as the 16th century, a few intrepid navigators, by taking soundings with hand lines, found that the open ocean can differ considerably in depth, showing that the ocean floor was not as flat as generally believed. Oceanic exploration during the next centuries dramatically improved our knowledge of the ocean floor. We now know that most of the geologic processes occurring on land are linked, directly or indirectly, to the dynamics of the ocean floor.

"Modern" measurements of ocean depths greatly increased in the 19th century, when deep-sea line soundings (bathymetric surveys) were routinely made in the Atlantic and Caribbean. In 1855, a bathymetric chart published by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Matthew Maury revealed the first evidence of underwater mountains in the central Atlantic (which he called "Middle Ground"). This was later confirmed by survey ships laying the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. Our picture of the ocean floor greatly sharpened after World War I (1914-18), when echo-sounding devices -- primitive sonar systems -- began to measure ocean depth by recording the time it took for a sound signal (commonly an electrically generated "ping") from the ship to bounce off the ocean floor and return. Time graphs of the returned signals revealed that the ocean floor was much more rugged than previously thought. Such echo-sounding measurements clearly demonstrated the continuity and roughness of the submarine mountain chain in the central Atlantic (later called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) suggested by the earlier bathymetric measurements.

The atmosphere surrounds the whole surface of the earth, both land and sea. Just as life in the depth of the ocean is subjected to a pressure owing to the weight of the sea above, so all of us, whether on land or sea, are living at the bottom of an ocean of air and are subjected to a pressure exerted by the weight of air above us. At sea level this pressure is about 1 kilogram per square centimetre. If we ascend a mountain or go up in an aeroplane, the pressure we experience at the new level is reduced, since the weight of air below our new level no longer contributes to the pressure exerted on us. Our bodies are adapted to the sea-level pressure of the atmosphere so that we are not conscious of it, but when we make a rapid ascent as in an aeroplane the reduced pressure affects the eardrums and renders breathing difficult owing to the reduction in the quantity of oxygen available in a given volume of air. An increase of elevation from sea level to 1 kilometre will decrease the pressure of about 100 grams per square centimetre, but the rate of decrease becomes less at higher levels.

Gamma secretase inhibitors have been observed to block NICD formation, and inhibit Notch signaling (De Strooper, B., et al. "A presenilin-1-dependent gamma-secretase-like protease mediates release of Notch intracellular domain." Nature 398(6727): 518-22 (1999)). Due to the importance of Notch signaling in cell fate determination, and tissue differentiation during both development and in the adult, inhibition of Notch signaling by gamma secretase inhibitors is thought to be a limiting factor in some of its therapeutic utilities. In order to identify gamma secretase inhibitors with some degree of selectivity over Notch, we have employed a reporter gene based Notch signaling assay using a constitutively active rat Notch 1 construct (ZEDN1) provided by Dr Gerry Weinmaster, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) as described in Shawber, C, D. Nofziger, J. J. Hsieh, C. Lindsell, O. Boglcr, D. Hayward and G. Weinmaster "Notch signaling inhibits muscle cell differentiation through a CBF1 -independent pathway." The XXY applied tube finning machine is a miniature high speed rolling mill synchronized with the rotation and advance of the tube. Quick change, steady rest input and output racks, allow the tube to rotate at up to 3000 RPM for 1” tube. Strip is fed to the machine from a payoff table beneath the Bare Tube Rack or from a free standing oscillating coil payoff system. The strip is guided to the primary and spindle roller and by adjusting the angle and rolling force of the primary forming roller, the outside fibers of the fin are rolled with a uniform taper. The fin curls as a result and hugs the tube. The rolling process locates more fin material near the base of the fin and tube for advantageous fin efficiency.
