You . . . I’m hanging out of the window of my office, sneaking a cigarette and trying to read Margins in the dull winter light, when there’s a noise I haven’t heard before. All right, the noise—crash, bang, etc.—I probably have heard before, but it’s coming from underneath me, which isn’t right. There shouldn’t be anything underneath me: I’m on the bottom floor. But the ground shakes, as if something’s trying to push up from below, and I think about other people’s mothers shaking out their duvets or even God shaking out the fabric of space-time; then I think, Fucking hell, it’s an earthquake, and I drop my cigarette and run out of my office at roughly the same time that the alarm starts sounding.
When alarms sound I don’t always run immediately. Who does? Usually an alarm is just an empty sign: a drill; a practice. I’m on my way to the side door out of the building when the shaking stops. Shall I go back to my office? But it’s impossible to stay in this building when this alarm goes off. It’s too loud; it wails inside your head. As I leave the building I walk past the Health and Safety notice board, which has pictures of injured people on it. The pictures blur as I go past: A man who has back pain is also having a heart attack, and various hologram people are trying to revive him. I was supposed to go to some Health and Safety training last year, but didn’t.
As I open the side door I can see people leaving the Russell Building and walking, or running, past our block and up the grey concrete steps in the direction of the Newton Building and the library. I cut around the right-hand side of the building and bound up the concrete steps, two at a time. The sky is grey, with a thin TV-static drizzle that hangs in the air like it’s been freeze-framed. Sometimes, on these January afternoons, the sun squats low in the sky like an orange-robed Buddha in a documentary about the meaning of life. Today there is no sun. I come to the edge of the large crowd that has formed, and I stop running. Everyone is looking at the same thing, gasping and making firework-display noises.
It’s the Newton Building.
It’s falling down.
I think of this toy—have I seen it on someone’s desk recently?—which is a little horse mounted on a wooden button. When you press the button from underneath, the horse collapses to its knees. That’s what the Newton Building looks like now. It’s sinking into the ground, but in a lopsided way; one corner is now gone, now two, now . . . Now it stops. It creaks, and it stops. A window on the third floor flaps open, and a computer monitor falls out and smashes onto what’s left of the concrete courtyard below. Four men with hard hats and fluorescent jackets slowly approach the broken-up courtyard; then another man comes, says something to them, and they all move away again.
Two men in grey suits are standing next to me.
‘Déjà vu,’ one of them says to the other.
I look around for someone I know. There’s Mary Robinson, the head of department, talking to Lisa Hobbes. I can’t see many other people from the English Department. But I can see Max Truman standing on his own, smoking a roll-up. He’ll know what’s going on.
‘Hello, Ariel,’ he mumbles when I walk over and stand next to him.
Max always mumbles; not in a shy way, but rather as if he’s telling you what it will cost to take out your worst enemy, or how much you’d have to pay to rig a horse race. Does he like me? I don’t think he trusts me. But why would he? I’m comparatively young, relatively new to the department, and I probably seem ambitious, even though I’m not. I also have long red hair and people say I look intimidating (because of the hair? Something else?). People who don’t say I look intimidating sometimes say I look ‘dodgy,’ or ‘odd.’ One of my ex-housemates said he wouldn’t like to be stuck on a desert island with me but didn’t say why.
‘Hi, Max,’ I say. Then: ‘Wow.’
‘You probably don’t know about the tunnel, do you?’ he says. I shake my head. ‘There’s a railway tunnel that runs under here,’ he says, pointing downwards with his eyes. He sucks on his roll-up, but nothing seems to happen, so he takes it out of his mouth and uses it to point around the campus. ‘It runs under Russell over there, and Newton, over there. Goes—or used to go—from the town to the coast. It hasn’t been used in a hundred years or so. This is the second time it’s collapsed and taken Newton with it. They were supposed to fill it with concrete after last time,’ he adds.
I look at where Max just pointed, and start mentally drawing straight lines connecting Newton with Russell, imagining the tunnel underneath the line. Whichever way you do it, the English and American Studies Building is on the line, too.
‘Everyone’s all right, at least,’ he says. ‘Maintenance saw a crack in the wall this morning and evacuated them all.’
Lisa shivers. ‘I can’t believe this is happening,’ she says, looking over at the Newton Building. The grey sky has darkened and the rain is now falling more heavily. The Newton Building looks strange with no lights on: It’s as if it has been stubbed out.
‘I can’t either,’ I say.
For the next three or four minutes we all stand and stare in silence at the building; then a man with a megaphone comes around and tells us all to go home immediately without going back to our offices. I feel like crying. There’s something so sad about broken concrete.
I don’t know about everyone else, but it’s not that easy for me just to go home. I only have one set of keys to my flat, and that set is in my office, along with my coat, my scarf, my gloves, my hat, and my rucksack.
There’s a security guard trying to stop people going in through the main entrance, so I go down the steps and in the side way. My name isn’t on my office door. Instead, it bears only the name of the official occupier of the room: my supervisor, Professor Saul Burlem. I met Burlem twice before I came here: once at a conference in Greenwich, and once at my interview. He disappeared just over a week after I arrived. I remember coming into the office on a Thursday morning and noticing that it was different. The first thing was that the blinds and the curtains were closed: Burlem always closed his blinds at the end of every day, but neither of us ever touched the horrible thin grey curtains. And the room smelled of cigarette smoke. I was expecting him in at about ten o’clock that morning, but he didn’t show up. By the following Monday I asked people where he was and they said they didn’t know. At some point someone arranged for his classes to be covered. I don’t know if there’s departmental gossip about this—no one gossips to me—but everyone seems to assume I’ll just carry on my research and it’s no big deal for me that he isn’t around. Of course, he’s the reason I came to the department at all: He’s the only person in the world who has done serious research on one of my main subjects: the nineteenth-century writer Thomas E. Lumas. Without Burlem, I’m not really sure why I am here. And I do feel something about him being missing; not loss, exactly, but something.
My car is in the Newton car park. When I get there I am not at all surprised to find several men in hard hats telling people to forget about their cars and walk or take the bus home. I do try to argue—I say I’m happy to take the risk that the Newton Building will not suddenly go into a slow-motion cinematic rewind in order that it can fall down again in a completely different direction—but the men pretty much tell me to piss off and walk home or take the bus like everybody else, so I eventually drift off in the direction of the bus stop. It’s only the beginning of January, but some daffodils and snowdrops have made it through the earth and stand wetly in little rows by the path. The bus stop is depressing: There’s a line of people looking as cold and fragile as the line of flowers, so I decide I’ll just walk.
I think there’s a shortcut into town through the woods, but I don’t know where it is, so I just follow the route I would have driven until I leave the campus, playing the scene of the building collapsing in my mind over and over again until, realizing I’m remembering things that never even happened, I give up thinking about it at all. Then I consider the railway tunnel. I can see why it would be there: After all, the campus is set on top of a steep hill and it would make sense to go under rather than over it. Max said it hadn’t been used for a hundred years or so. I wonder what was on this hill a hundred years ago. Not the university, of course, which was built in the 1960s. It’s so cold. Perhaps I should have waited for the bus. But no buses pass me as I walk. By the time I get to the main road into town my fingers have frozen inside my gloves and I start examining roads off to the right, looking for a shortcut. The first one is marked with a no through road sign, partially obscured by seagull shit; but the second looks more promising, with red-brick-terraced houses curling around to the left, so I take it.
I thought this was just a residential road, but soon the red-brick houses stop and there’s a small park with two swings and a slide rusting under a dark canopy of tangled but bare oak tree branches. Beyond that there is a pub and then a small row of shops. There’s a sad looking charity shop, already shut, and the kind of hairdresser that does blue rinses and sets for half price on a Monday. There’s a newsagent and a betting shop and then—aha—a second hand bookshop. It’s still open. I’m freezing. I go in.
It’s warm inside the shop and smells slightly of furniture polish. The door has a little bell that keeps jangling for a good three seconds after I close it, and soon a young woman comes out from behind a large set of bookshelves, holding a can of polish and a yellow duster. She smiles briefly and tells me that the shop will be closing in about ten minutes but that I am welcome to look around. Then she sits down and starts tapping something into a keyboard connected to a computer on the front desk.
‘Have you got a computerized catalogue of all your books?’ I ask her.
She stops typing and looks up. ‘Yeah. But I don’t know how to use it. I’m only filling in for my friend. Sorry.’
‘Oh. OK.’
‘What did you want to look up?’
‘It doesn’t matter.’
‘No, tell me. I might remember dusting it.’
‘Um . . . OK, then. Well, there’s this author called Thomas E. Lumas . . . Have you got any books by him?’ I always ask this in second hand bookshops. They rarely do have anything by him, and I’ve got most of his books already. But I still ask. I still hope for a better copy of something, or an older one. Something with a different preface or a cleaner dust jacket.
‘Er. . . .’ She screws up her forehead. ‘The name sounds sort of familiar.’
‘You might have come across something called The Apple in the Garden. That’s his famous one. But none of the others are in print. He wrote in the mid- to late-nineteenth-century but never became as famous as he should have been . . .’
‘The Apple in the Garden. No, the one I saw wasn’t that one,’ she says. ‘Hang on.’ She walks around to the large bookcase at the back of the shop. ‘L, Lu, Lumas . . . No. Nothing here,’ she says. ‘Mind you, I don’t know what section they’d have put him in. Is it fiction?’
‘Some is fiction,’ I say. ‘But he also wrote a book about thought experiments, some poetry, a treatise on government, several science books, and something called The End of Mr. Y, which is one of the rarest novels . . .’
‘The End of Mr. Y. That’s it!’ she says, excited. ‘Hang on.’
She goes up the stairs at the back of the shop before I can tell her that she must be mistaken. It is impossible to imagine that she actually has a copy up there. I would probably give away everything I own to obtain a copy of The End of Mr. Y, Lumas’s last and most mysterious work. I don’t know what she’s got it confused with, but it’s just absurd to think that she has it. No one has that book. There is one known copy in a German bank vault, but no library has it listed. I have a feeling that Saul Burlem may have seen a copy once, but I’m not sure. The End of Mr. Y is supposed to be cursed, and although I obviously don’t believe in any of that stuff, some people do think that if you read it you die.
‘Yeah, here it is,’ says the girl, carrying a small cardboard box down the stairs. ‘Is this the one you mean?’
She places the box on the counter.
I look inside. And—suddenly I can’t breathe—there it is; a small cream clothbound hardback with brown lettering on the cover and spine, missing a dust jacket but otherwise near perfect. But it can’t be. I open the cover and read the title page and the publication details. Oh shit. This is a copy of The End of Mr. Y. What the hell do I do now?
‘How much is it?’ I ask carefully, my voice as small as a pin.
‘Yeah, that’s the problem,’ she says, turning the box around. ‘The owner gets boxes like this from an auction in town, I think, and if they’re upstairs it means they haven’t been priced yet.’ She smiles. ‘I probably shouldn’t have shown it to you at all. Can you come back tomorrow when she’s in?’
‘Not really . . . ,’ I start to say.
Ideas beam through my mind like cosmic rays. Shall I tell her I’m not from around here and ask her to ring the owner now? No. The owner clearly doesn’t know that the book is here. I don’t want to take the risk that she will have heard of it and then refuse to sell it to me—or try to charge thousands of pounds. What can I say to make her give me the book? Seconds pass. The girl seems to be picking up the phone on the desk.
‘I’ll just give my friend a ring,’ she says. ‘I’ll find out what to do.’
While she waits for the call to connect I glance into the box. It’s unbelievable, but there are other Lumas books there, and a couple of Derrida translations that I don’t have, as well as what looks like a first edition of Eureka! by Edgar Allan Poe. How did these texts end up in a box together? I can’t imagine anyone connecting them, unless it was for a project similar to my Ph.D. Could someone else be working on the same thing? Unlikely, especially if they have given the books away. But who would give these books away? I feel as though I’m looking at Paley’s watch. It’s as if someone put this box together just to appeal to me.
‘Yeah,’ the girl is saying to her friend. ‘It’s like a small box. Upstairs. Yeah, in that pile in the toilet. Um . . . looks like a mix of old and new. Some of the old ones are a bit musty and stuff. Paperbacks, I think . . .’ She looks into the box and pulls out a couple of the Derrida books. I nod at her. ‘Yeah, just a real mix. Oh, do you? Cool. Yeah. Fifty quid? Seriously? That’s a lot. OK, I’ll ask her. Yeah. Sorry. OK. See you later.’
She puts the phone down and smiles at me. ‘Well,’ she says. ‘There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that you can have the whole box if you want, but the bad news is that I can’t sell individual books from the box, so it’s all or nothing really. Sam says she bought the box herself from an auction, and the owner hasn’t even seen it yet. But apparently she’s already said she hasn’t got the space to shelve loads more stuff . . . But the other bad news is that the whole box is going to cost fifty pounds. So . . .’
‘I’ll take it,’ I say.
‘Seriously? You’d spend that on a box of books?’ She smiles and shrugs. ‘Well, OK. I guess that’s fifty pounds, then, please.’
My hands shake as I get my purse out of my bag, pull out three crumpled ten pound notes and a twenty and hand them over. I don’t stop to consider that this is almost the only money I have in the world, and that I am not going to be able to afford to eat for the next three weeks. I don’t actually care about anything apart from being able to walk out of this shop with The End of Mr. Y, without someone realizing or remembering and trying to stop me. My heart is doing something impossible. Will I collapse and die of shock before I’ve even had a chance to read the first line of the book? Shit, shit, shit.
‘Fantastic, thanks. Sorry it was so much,’ the girl says to me.
‘No problem,’ I manage to say back. ‘I need a lot of these for my Ph.D., anyway.’
I place The End of Mr. Y in my rucksack, safe, and then I pick up the box and walk out of the shop, clutching it to me as I make my way home in the dark, the cold stinging my eyes, completely unable to make sense of what has just happened.

Tu . . . Stau atârnată de fereastra biroului meu, trăgând dintr-o ţigară şi încercând să citesc Margins, în lumina slabă de iarnă, când aud un zgomot pe care nu-l mai auzisem până atunci. Ei bine, zgomotul face – trosc, pleosc, etc. - e probabil să-l mai fi auzit până acum, dar vine de undeva de sub mine, ceea ce nu este în regulă. Nu ar trebui să fie nimic sub mine : stau jos, pe podea. Dar pământul se cutremură, ca şi cum ceva ar încerca să iasă din adâncuri la suprafaţă, şi mă gândesc la mamele altor oameni care îşi scutură cuverturile sau chiar la Dumnezeu care scutură urzeala spaţiu-timp; şi apoi mă gândesc, fir-ar al dracului, e un cutremur, şi scap ţigara şi fug din birou exact în acelaşi moment în care alarma începe să sune.
Când alarma sună nu fug întotdeauna imediat. Cine face aşa? De obicei, alarma este doar un semn lipsit de consistenţă; un exerciţiu. Mă îndrept spre uşa laterală a clădirii când cutremurul se opreşte. Oare ar trebui să mă întorc în birou ? Dar este imposibil să stai în această clădire când alarma porneşte. E prea puternică ; îţi urlă în cap. In timp ce părăsesc clădirea trec pe lângă panoul cu informaţii despre Sănătate şi Siguranţă, în care se află poze cu oameni răniţi. Pozele se întunecă în timp ce trec de ele: Un bărbat, care are dureri de spate, are şi un infarct şi mai mulţi oameni holograme încearcă să-l readucă la viaţă. Ar fi trebuit să merg la instruirea pentru Sănătate şi Siguranţă anul trecut, dar n-am fost.
In timp ce deschid uşa laterală pot vedea oameni care ies din Clădirea Russell şi merg sau aleargă, trec de clădirea noastră şi urcă pe scările din beton, în direcţia Clădirii Newton şi a bibliotecii. Scurtez drumul prin partea dreaptă a clădirii şi urc scările din beton, câte două în acelaşi timp. Cerul este cenuşiu, cu o burniţă subţire şi statică ca de televizor, care atârnă în aer de parca e pe stop-cadru. Câteodată, în astfel de după-amiezi de ianuarie, soarele se face mic pe cer, la fel ca un Buddha îmbrăcat ca o portocală, într-un documentar despre semnificaţia vieţii. Astăzi nu este soare. Am ajuns la marginea unei mulţimi care s-a format şi m-am oprit din alergat. Toţi se uită la acelaşi lucru, şuşotind şi făcând zgomote ca de focuri de artificii.
E clădirea Newton.
Se prăbuşeşte.
Mă gândesc la această jucărie – poate am văzut-o recent la cineva pe birou? – care e un cal mic fixat pe un buton de lemn. Când apeşi pe butonul de dedesubt, calul cade în genunchi. Cam aşa arată acum Clădirea Newton. Se scufundă în pământ, dar aplecată într-o parte; un colţ a dispărut, acum al doilea, acum…S-a oprit. A scârţâit şi s-a oprit. O fereastră de la etajul al treilea se deschide, şi monitorul unui calculator zboară în afară şi se izbeşte de ce a mai rămas din curtea de beton de jos. Patru bărbaţi cu căşti şi jachete fluorescente se apropie încet de curtea distrusă ; apoi mai vine un alt bărbat, le spune ceva şi pleacă din nou împreună.
Doi bărbaţi în costume gri stau lângă mine.
„Déjà vu,” spune unul dintre ei spre celalalt.
Mă uit în jur după cineva cunoscut. Iată-o pe Mary Robinson, şefa catedrei, vorbind cu Lisa Hobbes. Nu văd mulţi oameni din catedra de engleză. Dar îl pot vedea pe Max Truman, stând de unul singur şi fumând o ţigară. El trebuie să ştie ce se întâmplă.
„Bună, Ariel,” mormăie el, când trec şi mă aşez lângă el.
Max mormăie mereu; nu într-o manieră timidă, ci mai degrabă ca şi când ti-ar spune că o să te coste să-l scoţi la iveală pe cel mai aprig inamic al tău sau cât de mult va trebui să plăteşti pentru a conduce un cal de curse. Oare mă place? Nu cred ca are încredere în mine. Dar de ce ar avea? Sunt destul de tânără, relativ nouă în catedră, şi par probabil ambiţioasă, chiar dacă nu sunt. De asemenea, am părul lung şi roşcat şi oamenii spun că par a-i intimida (să fie din cauza părului ? E altceva ?). Oamenii pe care nu-i intimidez spun că par a fi « vicleană» sau « ciudată ». Unul dintre foştii mei colegi de apartament a spus că nu i-ar plăcea să fie blocat cu mine pe o insulă pustie, dar nu a spus de ce.
„Bună, Max,” îi spun. Apoi: „Wow.”
„Probabil nu ştii de tunel, nu-i aşa?” spune el. Dau din cap. „E un tunel pentru calea ferată care trece pe sub locul acesta”, spune el, arătând din ochi înspre în jos. Trage în continuare din ţigară, dar nimic nu pare să se întâmple, aşa că o scoate din gura şi o foloseşte ca să arate înspre campus. „Trece pe sub Russell pe acolo şi pe sub Newton pe acolo. Trecea - sau obişnuia să treacă – dinspre oraş spre coastă. Nu a mai fost folosit de vreo sută de ani sau chiar mai mult. Asta e a doua oară când se prăbuşeşte şi trage şi clădirea Newton după el. Ar fi trebuit să-l umple cu beton după data trecută”, adaugă el.
Mă uit în direcţia în care tocmai arătase Max, şi încep să trasez mental linii drepte care să conecteze Newton de Russell, imaginându-mi tunelul de sub linie. Oricum ai face, şi Clădirea de studii engleze şi americane e pe linie.
„Măcar, toată lumea e bine”, spune el. „Cei de la întreţinere au văzut de dimineaţă o crăpătură în perete şi i-au evacuat pe toţi”.
Lisa tremură. „Nu pot să cred că se întâmplă aşa ceva”, spune ea, uitându-se spre clădirea Newton. Cerul gri s-a întunecat şi ploaia cade acum cu mai mare forţă. Clădirea Newton arată ciudat cu nici o lumină aprinsă : e ca şi cum ar fi fost stinsă.
„Nici eu nu pot să cred”, am spus.
Pentru următoarele trei sau patru minute am stat toţi şi ne-am uitat în linişte la clădire; apoi un bărbat cu o portavoce a venit şi ne-a spus să plecam toţi acasă imediat, fără a mai trece pe la birouri. Îmi venea să tip. E ceva foarte trist legat de betonul spart.
Nu ştiu cum e la ceilalţi, dar pentru mine nu e aşa uşor să merg acasă. Am doar un singur set de chei de la apartament, şi acel set este în birou, împreună cu haina mea, eşarfa, mănuşile, pălăria şi rucsacul.
E un paznic care încearcă să oprească oamenii care intrau pe intrarea principală, aşa că cobor scările şi intru prin laterală. Numele meu nu este trecut pe uşa biroului. In schimb, apare doar numele ocupantului oficial al încăperii: supraveghetorul meu, Profesorul Saul Burlem. Îl mai întâlnisem pe Burlem de două ori înainte de a veni aici: o dată la o conferinţă în Greenwich, şi încă o dată la interviul meu. Dispăruse de mai bine de o săptămână după ce am ajuns eu. Îmi amintesc că am ajuns la birou într-o joi dimineaţa şi am realizat că era diferit. In primul rând, jaluzele şi perdelele nu erau trase: Burlem îşi trăgea întotdeauna jaluzelele la sfârşitul fiecărei zile, dar nici unul din noi nu atinsese niciodată acele perdele oribile, subţiri şi gri. Nu ştiu dacă fusese vreo bârfă în catedră – nimeni nu bârfise cu mine – dar toată lumea părea să presupună că îmi voi continua cercetarea şi că nu e mare scofală că el nu era prin preajmă. Bineînţeles, el era motivul pentru care venisem în catedră : El era singura persoană din lume care făcuse cercetări serioase asupra unuia din subiectele mele principale : scriitorul secolului al 19-lea, Thomas E. Lumas. Fără Burlem, nu sunt prea sigură de ce sunt aici. Şi chiar simt ceva legat de dispariţia lui ; nu chiar o pierdere, dar ceva.
Maşina mea este în parcarea Newton. Când ajung acolo nu sunt deloc surprinsă să găsesc câţiva bărbaţi cu căşti pe cap care le spun oamenilor să-şi lase maşinile şi să meargă spre casă sau să ia autobuzul. Chiar încerc să obiectez—şi spun că aş fi bucuroasă să-mi asum riscul ca Clădirea Newton să nu intre deodată într-o reluare cinematografică, adică să poată cădea din nou într-o direcţie complet diferită – dar bărbaţii îmi spun practic să dispar şi să merg spre casă sau să iau autobuzul ca toată lumea, deci mă deplasez în direcţia staţiei de autobuz. Este doar începutul lui ianuarie, dar câteva narcise şi câţiva ghiocei au reuşit să treacă de pământ şi stau jilavi în mici rânduri de-a lungul cărării. Cred că este o scurtătură spre oraş prin pădure, dar nu ştiu unde e, aşa că urmez drumul pe care aş fi mers până când ies din campus, rulând în cap, iarăşi şi iarăşi, scena căderii clădirii, dându-mi seama că îmi amintesc lucruri care nu s-au întâmplat niciodată, aşa că renunţ complet să mă mai gândesc la asta. Apoi mă gândesc la tunelul de cale ferată. Pot înţelege de ce ar fi acolo : La urma urmei, campusul este plasat în vârful unui deal abrupt şi mi se pare logic să mergi pe sub el decât pe deasupra. Max a spus că nu a mai fost folosit de mai mult de 100 de ani. Mă întreb ce o fi fost pe acest deal acum 100 de ani. Bineînţeles că nu era universitatea, care a fost construită în anii 1960. E aşa de frig. Poate că ar fi trebuit să aştept autobuzul. Dar nici un autobus nu trece pe lângă mine în timp ce merg. Până când ajung la strada principală înspre oraş, degetele mi-au îngheţat în mănuşi şi încep să examinez drumurile care fac dreapta, căutând o scurtătură. Primul este marcat cu un semn de trecere interzisă, parţial de nerecunoscut din cauza găinatului de pescăruşi ; dar al doilea pare mai promiţător, cu case din cărămidă roşie cu etajele retrase, aliniindu-se spre stânga, aşa că îl urmez.
Am crezut că era doar un drum rezidenţial, dar curând casele din cărămidă roşie dispar şi apare un parc micuţ cu două leagăne şi un tobogan ruginit sub un acoperiş întunecos făcut din crengile încurcate ale unui stejar desfrunzit. Dincolo de el văd un bar şi un mic rând de magazine. Mai e un jalnic magazin de binefacere, deja închis şi un fel de frizerie care face spălături scârboase şi are lunea preţurile la jumătate. Mai e un magazin cu ziare şi unul de pariuri şi apoi – aha – un magazin cu cărţi de mâna a doua. Îngheţ de frig. Intru.
Înăuntru este cald şi miroase vag a spray de lustruit mobila. Uşa are un mic clopoţel care continue să sune mai mult de 3 secunde după ce o închid, şi curând, o tânără apare din spatele unor rafturi enorme, ţinând în mâna un spray de lustruit mobila şi o cârpă de praf galbenă. Zâmbeşte scurt şi îmi spune că magazinul va fi închis în aproape 10 minute dar că sunt bine venită să mă uit în jur. Apoi se aşează şi începe să tasteze ceva la tastatura conectată la calculatorul de pe biroul din faţă.
„Aveţi cumva un catalog computerizat cu toate cărţile?”, o întreb.
Se opreşte din tastat şi se uită în sus. „Da. Dar nu ştiu cum să-l folosesc. Ii ţin locul prietenei mele. Îmi pare rău.”
„Aha. Bine.”
„Ce vreţi să căutaţi?”
„Nu contează.”
„Nu, spuneţi-mi. Poate îmi amintesc s-o fi şters de praf.”
„Pai…bine atunci. Ei bine, e un autor numit Thomas E. Lumas….Aveţi vreo carte semnată de el?” Întreb mereu aceste lucru în magazinele cu cărţi de mâna a doua. Rar au ceva semnat de el şi deja am majoritatea cărţilor lui. Dar întreb oricum. Încă mai sper la o copie mai bună la o anumită carte sau una mai veche. Una cu o prefaţă diferită sau cu o copertă fără praf.
„Pai…….” Roteşte capul. „Numele îmi sună destul de cunoscut.”
„E posibil să fi dat peste ceva intitulat Mărul din gradină. Asta e cartea lui renumită. Dar nici una din celelalte nu este imprimată. A scris la mijlocul-sfârşitul secolului al 19-lea, dar niciodată nu a ajuns atât de faimos pe cât ar fi trebuit...”
„Mărul din gradină. Nu, nu era asta cea pe care am văzut-o”, spune ea. „Aşteptaţi”. Se îndreaptă spre o bibliotecă mare din spatele magazinului. „L, Lu, Lumas . ..Nu. Nimic aici”, spune ea. „Auziţi, nu ştiu în ce secţiune ar fi putut să-l încadreze. A scris ficţiune ?”
„O parte e ficţiune.”, răspund eu. „Dar el a scris, de asemenea, despre experimente dure, puţină poezie, un tratat despre guvern, mai multe cărţi de ştiinţă şi ceva numit Sfârşitul domnului Y, care e unul din cele mai rare romane…”
„Sfârşitul domnului Y. Asta e!” spune ea entuziasmată. „Aşteptaţi puţin.”
Urcă pe scări, în spatele magazinului, înainte de a îi spune că sigur se înşeală. Îmi este imposibil să-mi imaginez că ea chiar are o copie acolo. Aş da probabil tot ce am numai pentru a obţine o copie a Sfârşitului domnului Y, una dintre ultimele şi cele mai misterioase romane ale lui Lumas. Nu ştiu cu ce a cufundat-o, dar este absurd să te gândeşti că o are. Nimeni nu are această carte. Se ştie că o copie se află într-un seif al unei bănci germane, dar nici o bibliotecă nu o are listată. Am impresia că Saul Burlem a văzut o copie odată, dar nu sunt sigură. Se presupune că Sfârşitul domnului Y este blestemată şi chiar dacă, în mod evident, nu cred nimic din toate acestea, unii oameni consideră că dacă o citeşti, mori.
„Mda, uite-o”, spune fata, coborând pe scări cu o cutie mică de carton. „Despre asta vorbeaţi ?”
Pune cutia pe tejghea.
Mă uit înăuntru. Şi – deodată nu mai pot respira – asta e ; o carte cartonată crem, mică şi legată în pânză, cu un scris maro pe coperta şi pe cotor, lipsindu-i supracoperta, dar de altfel aproape perfectă. Dar nu poate fi asta. Deschid coperta şi citesc prima pagină şi detaliile de publicare. Oh Doamne. Această carte e o copie a Sfârşitului domnului Y. Ce Dumnezeu fac acum?
„Cât costă ?” întreb prudentă, cu vocea foarte scăzută.
„Mda, aici e o problemă”, spune ea, întorcând cutia. „Proprietarul obţine astfel de cutii de la o licitaţie din oraş, cred, şi dacă sunt sus înseamnă că nu au fost încă estimate.” Zâmbeşte. „Probabil nu ar fi trebuit să v-o arăt deloc. Puteţi reveni mâine când e ea aici?”
„Nu prea……,” încep să spun.
Ideile îmi trec prin cap la fel ca razele cosmice. Oare ar trebui să-i spun că nu sunt din locurile acestea şi s-o rog s-o sune pe proprietară acum ? Nu. Proprietara nu ştie în mod sigur că această carte e aici. Nu vreau să-mi asum riscul ca ea să fi auzit de carte şi apoi să refuze să mi-o vândă - sau să încerce să-mi ceară mii de lire pe ea. Ce aş putea să-i spun ca s-o conving să-mi dea cartea? Secundele trec. Fata pare să ridice receptorul telefonului de pe birou.
„O să-i dau un telefon prietenei mele” spune ea. „Voi afla ce trebuie să fac.”
In timp ce ea aşteaptă să se facă legătura, mai arunc o privire în cutie. Este incredibil, dar mai sunt şi alte cărţi acolo semnate de Lumas şi câteva traduceri ale lui Derrida pe care nu le am, dar şi ceva care pare a fi prima ediţie din Eureka ! lui Edgar Allan Poe. Cum au ajuns împreună aceste cărţi în cutie ? Nu pot să-mi imaginez că cineva le-a adunat, doar dacă ar fi fost pentru vreun proiect similar cu doctoratul meu. Oare mai este cineva care lucrează la acelaşi subiect ? Puţin probabil, mai ales dacă a dat cărţile. Dar cine nu ar mai avea nevoie de astfel de cărţi? Mă simt ca şi cum m-aş uita la ceasul lui Paley. E ca şi cum cineva a strâns cărţile din această cutie doar pentru a mă atrage pe mine.
„Da”, îi spune fata prietenei sale. „E o cutie mică. Sus. Da, în acea grămadă din toaletă. Mm…arată ca un amestec de vechi cu nou. Câteva dintre cele vechi sunt puţin mucegăite şi fără valoare. Volume broşate, cred…”. Se uită în cutie şi scoate afară câteva cărţi semnate de Derrida. Dau din cap. „Da, o adevărată amestecătură. A…chiar aşa? Foarte frumos. Da. 50 de lire? Serios? O mulţime de bani. Bine, o s-o întreb. Mda. Scuze. Bine. Ne vedem mai încolo.”
Pune receptorul în furcă şi îmi zâmbeşte. “Ei bine, spune ea. Am veşti bune şi rele. Vestea bună este ca puteţi cumpăra toată cutia dacă vreţi, dar vestea rea este ca nu pot vinde separat cărţile din cutie, aşa că trebuie să luaţi totul sau nimic. Sam a spus că ea însăşi a cumpărat cutia de la o licitaţie şi proprietarul încă nu a văzut-o. Dar că aparent, ea a spus deja că nu mai este destul spaţiu pe rafturi pentru a aranja alte chestii…Si cealaltă veste proastă e că cutia va costa 50 de lire. Aşa că…’
„O cumpăr”, am spus.
„Serios ? Aţi cheltui atâta pe o cutie cu cărţi ?” Zâmbeşte şi ridică din umeri. „Atunci, bine. Cred ca o vă coste 50 de lire.”
Mâna îmi tremură în timp ce îmi scot portofelul din geantă, trag afară 3 hârtii mototolite a câte 10 lire şi una de 20 şi i le întind. Nu stau să mă gândesc că aceştia sunt aproape singurii mei bani din lume şi că nu voi fi în stare să-mi permit să mănânc în următoarele 3 săptămâni. Nu-mi mai pasă de nimic, decât să pot ieşi din acest magazin cu Sfârşitul domnului Y, fără ca cineva să-şi dea seama sau să-şi amintească şi să încerce să mă oprească. Inima îmi sare din piept. Oare o să cad şi o să mor de şoc înainte de a fi avut şansa să citesc primul rând din carte? Drace, drace, drace.
„Fantastic, mulţumesc. Îmi pare rău că a costat aşa de mult.”, îmi spune fata.
„Nici o problemă.”, reuşesc să îi răspund. „Oricum am nevoie de o mulţime din astea pentru doctorat.”
Bag în rucsac Sfârşitul domnului Y, prevăzătoare şi apoi iau cutia şi ies din magazin, ţinând-o strâns în timp ce mă îndrept, în noapte, spre casă, frigul înţepându-mi ochii, total incapabilă să realizez ceea ce tocmai s-a petrecut.
