Source text - English The Duke set up Camp III on May 27 at the base of a southeast spur of the mountain and split the men into teams to make a reconnaissance. The results brought back to camp the next day were not encouraging. From base to summit, K2 rose 12,000 feet (3,658 meters). The eastern slopes were far too difficult, and the northeastern spur impossibly steep, icy, and swept by constant avalanches.

Gdy zebrano się ponownie w pełnym składzie, by przedyskutować przebieg alpinistycznego rozeznania, okazało się, że jego wyniki niestety nie napawają optymizmem. Od bazy wysuniętej u podstawy góry do jej szczytu różnica wysokości wynosiła 3658 metrów! Wschodnie flanki nie wchodziły w grę jako zbyt niebezpieczne, północno-wschodnia grań wykluczono jako zbyt stromą i zalodzoną, na dodatek w całym tym rejonie stale schodziły lawiny.
