Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Nulla offre altrettante possibilità di titillamenti e ''schadenfreude'' come l’erotismo. Ecco perché è al centro di tanta letteratura. E come se la spassavano gli dei affollando le balconate celesti per assistere alle sorti del tradimento di Elena! E anche i tuoi amici si godono lo spettacolo. Le tue pagliacciate poi hanno rallegrato tante di quelle chiacchierate notturne..
Al confine tra mitologia e storia quel volpone di Ulisse - eroe sopravvissuto - fu il primo ad imparare come fregare gli dei. E forse il trucco più astuto in assoluto fu quello di farsi legare all’albero della nave prima che le sirene fossero a portata d’orecchio. Naturalmente c’è chi è ben felice di starsene sui parapetti, magari scrutando l’orizzonte. In alternativa puoi sempre sceglierti un albero e trovare le corde che più fanno al caso tuo: sport, superlavoro, castità con libretto di preghiere e tanto di campanella... Ma le corde più tenere e dure probabilmente le puoi trovare in una villetta bifamiliare corredata di figli teppistelli e una donna ossessionata dalla sua guerra alla polvere.

But here he was, in the plentiful of flesh, through the gleaming window of a real-estate agency of Fownes Street, a hallucination in shirtsleeves and crumpled suit trousers. Fifty pounds heavier and nearly bal, but it was him right enough. I almost wanted to walk away. Mother of Christ - so Ruth had been right. Eddie Virago back in Dublin and flogging flats for a living. He beamed and mouthed my name as he clocked me through the window. But he didn't seem pleased to see me. 'How's tricks?' I asked, when he came out and and shook hands. 'Bleedin state of you' he grinned. 'Victor Mature'.
Eddie was the kind of guy I used to attempt to lacth onto, back in my early days in London. Hip, flippant, indifferent to convention , he'd slouch into the Bunch of Grapes in his threadbare denim jacket, in his ripped leather jeans and Joe Strummer T-shirt, his brothel-creeper shoes so utterly filthy it was impossible to picture them having once been clean. Saturday nights, the place would be heaving with preppie Irish - I suppose it was a home-away-from-home. Posters of Dublin doorways and Brendan Behan. Agricultural apparatus hanging on the walls. When sunlight reaches the foot of the dressing table, you get up and look through the suitcase again. It’s hot in New York but it may turn cold in winter. All morning the bantam cocks have crowed. It’s not something you will miss. You must dress and wash, polish your shoes. Outside, dew lies on the fields, white and blank as pages. Soon the sun will burn it off. It’s a fine day for the hay.
In her bedroom your mother is moving things around, opening and closing doors. You wonder what it will be like for her when you leave. Part of you doesn’t care. She talks through the door.
‘You’ll have a boiled egg?’
‘No thanks, Ma.’
‘You’ll have something?’
‘Later on, maybe.’
‘I’ll put one on for you.’
Downstairs, water spills into the kettle, the bolt slides back. You hear the dogs rush in, the shutters folding. You’ve always preferred this house in summer: cool feeling in the kitchen, the back door open, scent of the dark wallflowers after rain.
In the bathroom you brush your teeth. The screws in the mirror have rusted, and the glass is cloudy. You look at yourself and know you have failed the Leaving Cert. The last exam was history and you blanked out on the dates. You confused the methods of warfare, the kings. English was worse. You tried to explain that line about the dancer and the dance.
You go back to the bedroom and take out the passport. You look strange in the photograph, lost. The ticket says you will arrive in Kennedy Airport at 12.25, much the same time as you leave. You take one last look around the room: walls papered yellow with roses, high ceiling stained where the slate came off, cord of the electric heater swinging out like a tail from under the bed. It used to be an open room at the top of the stairs but Eugene put an end to all of that, got the carpenters in and the partition built, installed the door. You remember him giving you the key, how much that meant to you at the time.
Downstairs, your mother stands over the gas cooker waiting for the pot to boil. You stand at the door and look out. It hasn’t rained for days; the spout that runs down from the yard is little more than a trickle. The scent of hay drifts up from neighbouring fields. As soon as the dew burns it off, the Rudd brothers will be out in the meadows turning the rows, saving it while the weather lasts. With pitchforks they’ll gather what the baler leaves behind. Mrs Rudd will bring out the flask, the salad. They will lean against the bales and eat their fill. Laughter will carry up the avenue, clear, like birdcall over water.
‘It’s another fine day.’ You feel the need for speech.
Your mother makes some animal sound in her throat. You turn to look at her. She wipes her eyes with the back of her hand. She’s never made any allowance for tears.
‘Is Eugene up?’ she says.
‘I don’t know. I didn’t hear him.’
‘I’ll go and wake him.’
It’s going on for six. Still an hour before you leave. The saucepan boils and you go over to lower the flame. Inside, two eggs knock against each other. One is cracked, a ribbon streaming white. You turn down the eggs. You don’t like yours soft.
Eugene comes down wearing his Sunday clothes. He looks tired. He looks much the same as he always does.
‘Well, Sis,’ he says. ‘Are you all set?’
‘Yeah.’
‘You have your ticket and everything?’
‘I do.’
Your mother puts out the cups and plates, slices a quarter of the loaf. This knife is old, its teeth worn in places. You eat the bread, drink the tea and wonder what Americans eat for breakfast. Eugene tops his egg, butters bread, shares it with the dogs. Nobody says anything. When the clock strikes six, Eugene reaches for his cap.
‘There’s a couple of things I’ve to do up the yard,’ he says. ‘I won’t be long.’
‘That’s all right.’
’You’d want to leave on time,’ your mother says. ‘You wouldn’t want to get a puncture.’
You place your dirty dishes on the draining board. You have nothing to say to your mother. If you started, you would say the wrong things and you wouldn’t want it to end that way. You go upstairs but you’d rather not go back into the room. You stand on the landing. They start talking in the kitchen but you don’t hear what they say. A sparrow swoops down onto the window ledge and pecks at his reflection, his beak striking the glass. You watch him until you can’t watch him any longer and he flies away.

I galletti hanno cantato per tutta la mattina. Non ti mancheranno. Ti devi vestire e lavare, lucidare le scarpe. Fuori la rugiada è sparsa sui campi, bianchi e vuoti come pagine. Presto il sole l’asciugherà. È una giornata buona per fare il fieno.
Senti tua madre che sta spostando cose nella sua camera, porte che si aprono e chiudono. Ti chiedi come sarà per lei quando te ne sarai andata. A una parte di te non importa. Ti parla attraverso la porta.
‘Ti va un uovo sodo?’
‘No grazie ma’.
‘Vuoi qualcosa?’
‘Forse più tardi.’
‘Te ne faccio uno.’
Di sotto, l’acqua scroscia nel bollitore, la serratura cigola nel chiavistello. Senti i cani precipitarsi in casa, i battenti che si aprono. Hai sempre preferito questa casa in estate: il fresco della cucina, la porta del retro aperta, il profumo delle violacciocche dopo la pioggia.
In bagno ti lavi i denti. Le viti dello specchio sono arrugginite, e il vetro è appannato. Ti guardi e sai che non hai passato l’esame di maturità. L’ultimo esame era di storia e non ti ricordavi le date. Hai fatto confusione tra i vari metodi bellici, i re. Con l’inglese è andata peggio. Hai cercato di spiegare quel verso sulla danzatrice e la danza.
Torni in camera e tiri fuori il passaporto. Sembri strana nella foto, smarrita. Il biglietto dice che arriverai all’aeroporto Kennedy alle 12.25, più o meno lo stesso orario della partenza. Dai un’ultima occhiata alla stanza: i muri tappezzati di rose su fondo giallo, l’alto soffitto macchiato nei punti in cui l’ardesia è venuta via, il filo dello scaldino elettrico che svirgola come una coda da sotto il letto. Prima era una stanza aperta in cima alle scale ma Eugene ha posto fine a tutto ciò, ha fatto venire i muratori per costruire il divisorio e montare la porta. Ricordi che è stato lui a consegnarti la chiave, quanto sia stato importante per te allora.
Di sotto, tua madre è in piedi davanti ai fornelli a gas aspettando che la pentola bolla. Tu stai alla porta e guardi fuori. Non piove da giorni; lo scarico che scorre giù dal cortile non è che un rivolo. L’odore del fieno aleggia dai campi vicini. Appena la rugiada sarà evaporata, i fratelli Rudd saranno sui prati a voltare le andane di fieno, approfittandone finché il tempo dura. Con i forconi rastrelleranno i resti lasciati dalle imballatrici. La signora Rudd porterà il fiasco, l’insalata. Si appoggeranno alle balle e mangeranno a sazietà. Le risa risuoneranno sulla strada, nitide come richiamo d’uccelli sull’acqua.
‘È un’altra bella giornata.’ Senti il bisogno di parlare.
Tua madre emette una specie di suono d’animale dalla gola. Ti giri a guardarla. Si asciuga gli occhi col dorso della mano. Non si è mai concessa alle lacrime.
‘Si è alzato Eugene?’ chiede.
‘Non lo so. Non l’ho sentito.’
‘Vado a svegliarlo.’
Sono già quasi le sei. Ancora un’ora prima di partire. La pentola bolle e vai ad abbassare la fiamma. All’interno, tre uova urtano tra loro. Uno è incrinato, un nastro sgorga bianco. Abbassi la fiamma. Non ti piacciono troppo soffici.
Eugene scende giù vestito con gli abiti della domenica. Sembra stanco. Il suo aspetto è più o meno quello di sempre.
‘Bene sorellina,’ dice. ‘Preparato tutto?’
‘Sì.’
‘Hai il biglietto e tutto il resto?’
‘Sì, tutto’.
Tua madre tira fuori le tazze e i piatti, affetta un quarto di pane. Il coltello è vecchio, la dentellatura consumata a tratti. Mangi il pane, bevi il tè e ti chiedi cosa mangiano gli americani a colazione. Eugene apre il suo uovo, imburra il pane, ne dà un po’ ai cani. Nessuno dice niente. Quando l’orologio segna le sei, Eugene prende il suo berretto.
‘Ci sono un paio di cose che devo fare in cortile,’ dice. ‘Non ci metterò molto.’
‘Va bene.’
‘Sarà meglio che partiate in tempo,’ dice tua madre. ‘Non sia mai vi trovate con una gomma a terra.’
Metti i tuoi piatti sporchi sul ripiano del lavandino. Non hai niente da dire a tua madre. Se cominciassi, diresti le cose sbagliate e non vorresti andasse a finire così. Vai di sopra ma preferiresti non tornare in camera. Rimani sul pianerottolo. Iniziano a parlare in cucina ma non senti cosa dicono. Un passero piomba sulla cornice della finestra e beccando la sua immagine riflessa, picchietta sul vetro. Lo guardi finché puoi e vola via.
