O senso comum, como não poderia deixar de ser, nos revela muitos mitos acerca do português e de seu funcionamento. Um dos tantos mitos estabelecidos socialmente é a idéia de que o português é uma língua homogênea. A Lingüística, dentre outros esforços, já mostrou que pensar em uma língua como algo homogêneo é um grande equívoco. A respeito do mito em relação à homogeneidade do português, Bagno (2004, p.15) argumenta que
Esse mito é muito prejudicial à educação porque, ao não reconhecer a verdadeira diversidade do português falado no Brasil, a escola tenta impor sua norma lingüística como se ele fosse, de fato, a língua comum a todos os 160 milhões de brasileiros, independentemente de sua idade, de sua origem geográfica, de sua situação sócioeconômica, de seu grau de escolarização, etc.
O português, como todas as línguas, é heterogêneo. Cada grupo dentro de uma comunidade possui características próprias do seu falar. A essas diferentes modalidades de língua chamamos variedades lingüísticas2. Por sua vez, a corrente da pedagogia da variação lingüística defende um ensino de português desprovido de qualquer preconceito em relação à variedade dialetal usada pelo aluno.
Porém, afirma-se, sobretudo nos documentos oficiais, como os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais, que o objetivo das aulas de Português continua sendo ensinar português-padrão e que a reflexão sobre a gramática da língua3 deve permanecer, o que significa refletir sobre as estruturas da língua e os mecanismos que definem o seu funcionamento em situações reais de interação. Nesse contexto, insere-se a discussão sobre o desenvolvimento de habilidades e competências, dentre as quais está a escrita. Nessa atividade é fundamental que os alunos saibam, por exemplo, pontuação.
Nesse caso, português-padrão e gramática normativa andam juntos: ensina-se pontuação pautando-se na gramática, pois é necessário saber designar mecanismos lingüísticos tais como aposto, vocativo e outros elementos explicitados pela sintaxe tradicional. No momento do trabalho com os verbos - tão importantes não só na escrita, como também na oralidade - o professor ensina que o verbo é conjugado em tempo, modo, número e pessoa e que isso não é aleatório, cada conjugação dependerá diretamente do que ele quer expressar e para quem se dirige o enunciado. Assim, nessas atividades com os verbos o professor estará trabalhando o português-padrão, segundo a nomenclatura da gramática. Entretanto, se um professor resolver levar a fundo todo o conteúdo de verbos explicitado pela gramática normativa e passar dias a obrigar o aluno a decorar como se conjugam os verbos nas segundas pessoas do singular (tu) e do plural (vós), ele não visando a língua conforme seu verdadeiro uso, pois podemos observar que tais estruturas não condizem mais com a nossa realidade lingüística. Ainda no uso dos verbos, a seguinte frase: “Te darei o livro amanhã”, segundo a gramática normativa, deveria ser: “Dar-te-ei o livro amanhã”. Como podemos passar semanas fazendo com que o aluno decore algo que ele nunca ouvirá?
O trabalho com a gramática é de grande importância no auxílio dos professores de português. Porém, para que o ensino de língua se constitua em algo produtivo, os professores deverão demonstrar duas capacidades: focar a gramática de forma reflexiva e não transmissiva e selecionar o que é relevante e necessário aos alunos. Os estudantes e profissionais de Letras nunca deixaram de apoiar o trabalho com a gramática, pois é através dela que ensinamos o português-padrão. Não se pode concordar, pois, com o ensino tradicionalista com características transmissivas sem nenhuma crítica em relação a essa norma existente na gramática e estabelecida como padrão. Mais importante do que saber as regras postuladas pela gramática normativa é saber analisá-las criticamente.

As it should be, the common sense reveals to us many myths concerning Portuguese and it functions. One of the many socially established myths is the idea that Portuguese is a homogeneous language. Linguistics, among other efforts, has shown that thinking of a language as something homogenous is a big mistake. In respect to the myth regarding the homogeneity of the Portuguese, Bagno (2004, p.15) argues that

This myth is very detrimental to education because, by not recognizing the true diversity of Portuguese spoken in Brazil, the school tries to impose its linguistic standard as if it is, in fact, the common language of all 160 million Brazilians, regardless of their age, geographical origin, socioeconomic status, education level, etc..

Like all languages, Portuguese is heterogeneous. Each group within a community has specific characteristics on its way of speaking. We call linguistic varieties to these different modalities of language. In turn, the pedagogic trend of linguistic variation defends a teaching of Portuguese devoid of any bias related to the dialectal variety used by any student.

However, it is affirmed, especially in official documents such as the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais, that the goal of the Portuguese classes is still the teaching standard Portuguese and that the reflection on the grammar of the language must remain, which means thinking about the structures of language and the mechanisms that define its operation in real situations of interaction. In this context, comes in the discussion on the development of skills and competencies, among which is the writing. In this activity it is essential that students know, for example, punctuation.

In this case, standard Portuguese and normative grammar agree with each other: punctuation is taught guided by grammar, because it is necessary to know how to designate linguistic mechanisms such as apposition, vocative and other factors disclosed by the traditional syntax. When working with the verbs - so important not only in writing, as well as verbal - the teacher teaches that the verb is inflected in time, mood, number and person and that is not random, each inflection will depend directly both on what it wishes to express and to whom the statement is addressed. Thus, in these activities with verbs, the teacher will be working with the standard Portuguese, according to grammar nomenclature. However, if a teacher decides to go deep on the entire contents of verbs explained by normative grammar and spend days forcing the student to decorate the inflections of verbs in second person singular (tu) and plural (vós), he will not be aiming language at its actual use, and we can observe that such structures do not match anymore with our linguistic reality. Still with the use of verbs, the following sentence: "Te darei o livro amanhã", according to normative grammar should be: "Dar-te-ei o livro amanhã". How can we spend weeks making the student decorate something he never heard?

The work with grammar is very important in helping Portuguese teachers. However, for the teaching of language to become something productive, teachers should demonstrate two abilities: focus on grammar in a reflective and not transmissive way and select what is relevant and necessary for the students. Students and professionals of Language courses never stopped supporting the work with grammar; it is through it that is taught the standard Portuguese. We cannot agree therefore with the traditional teaching with regards to transmissive characteristics without any criticism about this existing norm in grammar which is set as the standard. More important than knowing the rules postulated by the normative grammar is to know how to analyze them critically.
