| Translation - English Do Western Embassies offer a lifeline to the people of Iraq?
Most Iraqi’s in Syria are inclined to believe their residency in Syria is merely a temporary stop on their way to Europe, Australia or Canada. Those who have relatives in these countries- or those who have luck on their side - quickly aquire permits or documents which help them in obtaining embassy approval and travel visas. Most Iraqi’s that arrive in Syria can only wait in snooker halls and internet cafés , hoping that one of these western embassies is going to throw them some kind of a lifeline, to bail them out of the situation they are in; -although this will ultimately cut them of from all their connections with their own country and the Arab world in general.
It is not an exaggeration to say that around 90% of Iraqi's will try their luck at the doors of these embassies; a number of them will be lucky enough to obtain the right to asylum considering that currently Iraq is an unstable, unsafe and dangerous country. Despite this, the American embassy remains strict, not just in Syria but in the whole world, in granting this right to asylum. Consideration depends on safety concerns in America, as well as the fact that America considers Iraq as currently being in a secure and stable situation. Other countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Canada accept larger numbers of people, especially in the first stages of the American incursion when the security issue was at its peak and the Iraqi constitution and government was still far in the future. This is not to say that the security concerns today are any less, as the threat of civil war is approaching; War is not raging now, but it could start at any time. | More Less | | Bachelor's degree - School of Oriental and African Studies | | Years of translation experience: 5.
