The six-bond bound

What is the maximum number of covalent chemical bonds that two atoms can share? Six, according to the latest theoretical study — at least where just two atoms of the same element are concerned.
Every atom can make a small, integer number of covalent chemical bonds with neighbouring atoms. This number is usually not more than eight, although a precise statement is dangerous — in rare cases, atoms can have more than eight neighbours, but whether they are covalently bound is open to debate. By the nineteenth century, chemists had realized that more than one bond may connect the same two atoms: most famously, adjacent carbon atoms can be bound twice or even three times. For many years, three seemed to be the limit. Then, in 1965, a salt compound was isolated with a fourfold rhenium–rhenium bond in its anion. Five bonds followed in 2005, when the synthesis of a complex organometallic compound was interpreted in terms of a quintuple bond between two chromium atoms. In a thorough theoretical study in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Roos, Borin and Gagliardi use quantum chemistry to tackle the obvious question that arises — what is the maximum number of bonds that can bind two atoms?
Theoretical models of covalent bonding go back to 1916, when Gilbert Lewis introduced the idea of electron pairing between neighbouring atoms. Remarkably, this simple model is still the most widespread conceptual description of the covalent bond. The first quantum-chemical study, however, struggled to reconcile the paired-electron idea with the delocalized nature of electron wave functions, which are smeared over large areas of an atom in ‘orbitals’. Since then, the paired-electron bond has become chemistry’s unicorn — although everyone seems to know what one looks like, no one has actually ever seen.
Roos et al. simplify things by focusing mainly on molecules made up of two atoms of the same elements, in which there are no further bonds to complicate the analysis…

In einer umfassenden theoretischen Arbeit, erschienen in der internationalen Ausgabe von „Angewandte Chemie“, untersuchen nun Roos, Borin und Gagliardi mit quantenmechanischen Methoden die naheliegende Frage: Was ist die maximale Anzahl kovalenter Bindungen zwischen zwei Atomen?
Theoretische Modelle der chemischen Bindung gibt es seit 1916; damals formulierte Gilbert Lewis die Hypothese, dass die Elektronen zweier benachbarter Atome Paare bilden. Erstaunlicherweise ist dieses einfache Modell immer noch die am weitesten verbreitete konzeptionelle Beschreibung der kovalenten Bindung. Dark matter in galactic collisional debris

Galaxies that are born in clusters occasionally get so close to each other that material from their outer regions, which is only weakly bound by gravity, gets flung into space, producing long tidal tails. Other material can fall from one galaxy to the other, making a bridge. When these tails and bridges disperse, they can leave behind clumps that may become independent galaxies. Small galaxies can also collide with and travel through large galaxies, producing giant circular wakes and more clumps. As the colliding galaxies eventually lose their orbital energy and merge, some of the debris falls back in. These are the processes that are thought to have built up most of today’s galaxies from the small clumps produced in the early universe. An important question that goes back 50 years is whether the smallest of today’s galaxies, the dwarfs, are old surviving remnants from early times, or young debris from recent collisions. On page 1166 of this issue, Bournaud et al. report the presence of dark matter in tidal dwarfs. This is contrary to most theoretical predictions, providing new details about galaxy formation and about the nature of dark matter.
The formation of dwarf galaxies has been difficult to understand because essentially all small galaxies have relatively large amounts of dark matter, usually 10 times the visible matter evident with optical and radio telescopes. However, collisional debris is not supposed to have dark matter. Galaxies should be born with their dark matter in equilibrium, having an orbital energy comparable to the gravitational potential energy. Giant spirals should therefore have dark-matter particles moving at high speeds. This means that small, weakly bound collisional debris cannot hold onto the dark matter from their former galaxies. The dwarfs just get the cold gas and whatever slow-moving stars are in the part of the disk they came from…

Galaxien, die in Galaxienhaufen entstehen, kommen sich manchmal sehr nahe. Dabei wird Material aus ihren äußeren Regionen, das nur schwachen Schwerkrafteinflüssen unterliegt, in den Raum geschleudert und bildet so lange Gezeitenarme. Auch kann Materie von der einen Galaxie in eine andere stürzen, wobei eine Sternenbrücke entsteht. Wenn diese Arme und Brücken sich auflösen, bleiben oft Gas- und Sternenwolken zurück, aus denen möglicherweise eigene Galaxien werden. Außerdem können kleine Galaxien mit großen kollidieren oder sie durchdringen, wobei sich ebenfalls Materiewolken aus Gas und Sternen sowie sog. Polarringe formieren. Während die Galaxien nach und nach ihre Bahnenergie verlieren und am Ende verschmelzen, fällt ein Teil dieser Trümmer in sie zurück. Es wird angenommen, dass durch solche Prozesse aus den kleinen Dichtefluktuationen im frühen Universum die meisten der heutigen Galaxien entstanden sind. In diesem Zusammenhang ist eine zentrale Frage seit nunmehr 50 Jahren ungeklärt: ob die kleinsten der heutigen Galaxien, die Zwerggalaxien, Relikte aus der Frühzeit des Weltalls oder Überreste aus jüngeren Galaxienkollisionen sind. Bournaud und Kollegen berichten nun, dass Dunkle Materie in "tidal tail dwarf galaxies" - Zwerggalaxien, die sich in Gezeitenarmen bilden - vorhanden ist. Das widerspricht einerseits den meisten theoretischen Vorhersagen und liefert andererseits neue Einzelheiten zur Entstehung von Galaxien und zur Natur der dunklen Materie.
Die Entstehung von Zwerggalaxien ist nicht so leicht zu verstehen, weil kleine Galaxien vergleichsweise viel Dunkle Materie enthalten, normalerweise zehnmal mehr als mit optischen oder Radioteleskopen detektierbare Materie. Bisher nahm man aber an, dass Überreste von Galaxien-Kollisionen keine Dunkle Materie enthalten. Galaxien entstehen im Gleichgewicht mit ihrer Dunklen Materie, und ihre Rotationsenergie entspricht der potentiellen Energie. Sehr große Spiralnebel sollten also Teilchen Dunkler Materie enthalten, die sich sehr schnell bewegen. Das bedeutet, dass kleine, von der Schwerkraft nur schwach zusammengehaltene Trümmer die Dunkle Materie der Galaxien, aus denen sie entstanden sind, nicht an sich binden können. Den "Zwergen" bleiben nur das kalte Gas und die langsamen Sterne aus dem Teil der Scheibe, aus dem sie sich gebildet haben …
