Baby-friendly Hospitals
Great news! Filipinos have something good to teach the world! UNICEF and WHO have been so impressed with our two pioneering “baby-friendly” hospitals, Dr. Jose Fabella Hospital in Manila and Baguio General Hospital, that they are making them the models for hospitals all over the world.
A “baby-friendly" hospital promotes breastfeeding through a full "rooming-in" policy. Mother and child stay in the same room so baby can be breast-fed whenever hungry. The hospital bans all infant formula and feeding bottles from its premises.
Breast-feeding is best for babies, good for mothers because it helps prevent another pregnancy within six months after delivery, and economical for hospitals because it eliminates the costs of nurseries, milk and feeding bottles.

When teachers and other government employees clamor for better pay, when Filipinos everywhere complain about poor medical care, uncollected garbage, roads and bridges in disrepair, etc. the answer is always no money.
True, the national budget has been in deficit every year since 1987 but this is only because from 1986 to 1990 an average of 30% of the national budget was used for interest payments on government's foreign and domestic debts.
Without these interest payments, government revenues would have exceeded expenditures. Even if we paid half of these interests, we would have had a balanced budget each year. For the useless Bataan Nuclear Power Plant alone, we are paying $355,000 a day in interest - that's $130 billion a year!
The IMF insists that we reduce the budget deficit by cutting government expenditures but not for debt service. The government complies because it wants more loans. What it cuts is usually the budget for essential services for our people.
