Washington DC, July 21 2007.
On June 21, 2007 a historic joint meeting was held in the House of Representatives between the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Duma. The aim of the joint meeting was to promote deeper understanding between the US and the Russian Federation on four key themes: democracy and human rights, unresolved regional conflicts, strategic stability and trade and economic issues. Although the joint meeting will mark the 3rd in a serious of meetings between members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and their Duma counterparts, with previous sessions held in Moscow (June 2004) and Washington (2005), it was the first ever meeting to be held open to the public and media. There was a unanimous consensus that this event establish an historic tradition and to do the same at the next meeting in Moscow.
Chairman of the US Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Tom Lantos hosted the joint meeting and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nancy Pelosi shortly participated at the beginning of the meeting to officially welcome her Russian colleagues. Speaker Pelosi took the opportunity to express her deep conviction of the importance inter-parliamentary cooperation played in international relations. In particular, she expressed her gratitude for the good working relationship their two parliaments have established over recent years and to express her personal delight as to the convening of the first ever public joint meeting between the US Congress and Russian Duma. The delegation from the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee was led by the Chairman Mr. Konstantin Kosachev, member of Putin’s governing United Russia’s Party, and also included some opposition lawmakers from the Liberal Democrtic Party and the United Socialist Party (Narodnaya Volya).
| Translation - Croatian Zajednicki sastanak americkog kongresa i ruske Dume u Zastupničkom domu.
Washington, DC, 21. lipnja, 2007.
Konstantin Kosachev, član Putinove vladajuće stranke Sjedinjena Rusija ( United Russia's Party), a uključivalo je također nekoliko zakonodavaca opozicije iz Liberalno demokratske stranke i Stranke ujedinjenih socijalista (Narodnaya Volya).
