Source text - English Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation. On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long. Încă de la începuturi, bărbaţii au tot încercat să guste din deliciile erotismului fără a-i cădea victime. Putem defini societăţile şi religiile prin prisma poziţiei lor faţă de această chestiune spinoasă. Poligamie, monogamie cu reprimarea dorinţei sexuale, monogamie plus relaţii extraconjugale, monogamie şi prostituate, monogamie în serie. Ar mai fi şi câteva găselniţe originale, rezultate ale inventivităţii sau create pur şi simplu din disperare: Victor Hugo având în peretele biroului său o uşă specială, pentru a primi câte o femeie în fiecare după-amiază. Al şaselea simţ al lui Auden, care îl ajuta să găsească amanţi de ocazie în orice oraş. Picasso, cu refuzul său de a alege între soţie şi amantă, când i-au cerut-o amândouă. Invariabil, urmează penitenţa. Dar, când viaţa ne apare în culori strălucitoare şi cu belelele aferente, realizăm că erotismul nu s-a inventat pentru plăcerea noastră, şi nici măcar pentru supravieţuirea speciei, ci doar spre amuzamentul zeilor. Nimic nu stârneşte bucuria răutăcioasă mai mult decât erotismul, un nesecat izvor de scene mitologice. Cine se scutura de râs asistând la consecinţele infidelităţii frumoasei Elene, de la înălţimea stalurilor cereşti? Zeii... La fel se amuză şi prietenii noştri, delectându-se cu bârfele din miez de noapte... La contopirea istoriei cu mitul, primul erou care a ştiut cum să-i tragă pe sfoară pe atotputernici a fost isteţul Ulise. El s-a legat cu odgoane de catarg înainte ca sirenele să-şi facă auzit cântecul ademenitor. Desigur, sunt printre noi din aceia care se înghesuie la prova şi chiar scrutează orizontul. Ceilalţi îşi aleg catargul şi se leagă de el cu ce le este la îndemână: sportul, munca, celibatul cu tot ce implică el… Însă probabil că cele mai zdravene odgoane sunt cele care te leagă în vreo casă înghesuită la periferie, cu o droaie de plozi gălăgioşi în jur, şi o femeie care nu prea lasă praful să se aşeze.

Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay. None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable. The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there? No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. Ne plimbăm aparatul de fotografiat de colo până colo şi nu mai vedem nimic decât prin lentila atotcuprinzătoare. Se înţelege de la sine că nimeni şi nimic nu trebuie să mişte sau să ne treacă prin faţă în timpul focalizării, aşa că turiştii de modă veche, care nu-şi doresc decât să stea şi să admire peisajul cu anacronicele lor priviri, trebuie măturaţi din cale, pentru a nu stingheri ceremonialul sacru. Ne folosim de obiectivul fotografic ca să ne imprimăm figura pe tot ceea ce vedem, sub pretextul că imortalizăm minunăţiile lumii, care oricum se vând la toate colţurile de stradă, după ce au fost deja surprinse de profesionişti în toată splendoarea. Dar la ce bun să-i arătăm mătuşii care ne aşteaptă acasă nişte cărţi poştale cu peisajul toscan, dacă noi nu apărem în poză, să se vadă că am fost acolo? Niciun deal sau munte nu există, dacă nu e şi mutra mea acolo. Niciun monument nu stă în picioare, dacă nu-l sprijină nevastă-mea. Niciun templu nu prezintă interes dacă nu are avizul rânjetului meu. Prin puterea obiectivului îmi adjudec tot ce e frumos, posed tot, micşorez tot, disciplinez tot, ca să-l pot afişa pe un perete gol de sufragerie, unde numai un cerc restrâns de prieteni şi rude vor avea privilegiul de a afla unicul scop pentru care a fost creat acest decor superb: l-am văzut, am fost acolo, l-am fotografiat, deci iată-l, există!

Source text - English Heathrow Airport is one of the few places in England you can be sure of seeing a gun. These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...) Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. Coats, shirts, T-shirts, jeans, suits; like slept-in pyjamas. (...) I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion. Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. These friends of ours are primarily Ally’s friends. I don’t seem to know anyone anymore, and away from the children and the overhead planes, hearing myself think, I hear the thoughts of a whinger. This is not what I had been hoping to hear. I start crying, not grimacing or sobbing, just big silent tears rolling down my cheeks. I don’t want anyone I know to see me crying, because I’m not the kind of person who cracks up at Heathrow airport some nothing Tuesday morning. I manage our house impeccably, like a business. It’s a serious job. I have spreadsheets to monitor the hoover-bag situation and colour-coded print-outs about the ethical consequences of nappies. I am not myself this morning. I don’t know who I am. Acestea aparţin poliţiştilor îmbrăcaţi în cămăşi cu mânecă scurtă şi veste antiglonţ, vigilenţi la teroriştii care pot arunca în aer magazinul Tie Rack. Este puţin probabil să mă întrebe pe mine de sănătate, dar, dacă o fac, le voi spune adevărul. Le voi spune ce caut acolo. Am de gând să stau pe aeroportul Heathrow până când voi vedea pe cineva cunoscut. (…) În mod surprinzător, au trecut 39 de minute şi nu am văzut pe nimeni cunoscut. Source text - English I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought. A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are: Have something to say. Say it. Stop talking. Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law. It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter. Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Vorba unui negustor ar trebui să se supună unor legi mai desluşite şi mai puţine la număr decât oricare altă funcţiune a fiinţei omeneşti. Acestea ar fi: Să aibă ceva de spus. S-o spuie. Să-şi închidă gura. Un comersant prea slobod de gură poate s-ajungă la pricină de judecată or la sapă de lemn, căci se ştie că prima duce negreşit la cea de-a doua. Eu ţin aici un oficiu juridic care mă costă o căruţă de bani, dar ştiu că sunt la adăpost de neplăceri prin tribunale. Nu-i bai, când faci vizite unei domnişoare or şezi cu amicii după cină poţi să te întinzi la vorbă, aşa cum într-o drumeţie cu şcoala de duminică poţi să zăboveşti la cules de floricele; dar când faci negoţ, e bine să nu baţi cale lungă de la un capăt de propoziţiune la altul.
