North west of Ullapool on the Coigach Peninsula is the old crofting village of Achiltibuie with views to the Summer Isles and beyond. Visit the amazing Hydroponicum, a garden for the future where exotic plants are grown without soil. This soil-free complex of glasshouses provides a range of climates including Southern England, Northern France and the Canaries. As a result you can find plants as diverse as bananas, oranges and figs, all growing without soil and in the wilds of north west Scotland! Further west a loop of minor road takes you to the tiny settlement of Altandhu, complete with its Smokehouse, where fish, meat and game are cured in the traditional Scottish way. In the far end of Coigach you pass Stac Pollaidh, an amazingly knobbly little mountain which is surprisingly easy to climb and offers spectacular views across Scotland's best mountain, Suilven, and the Inverpolly Nature Reserve.
