SLEEPWALK *

(ELECTRIC GUITAR fades in. Sounds like *
someone working out a rhythm. PIN SPOT
ON DILLON sprawled out on the stage on
his back, asleep. The sound of the *
guitar wakes him. He sits up. Looks *
around. DILLON gets to his feet,
searches for the sound of the guitar *
which seems to elude him. He recognizes *
the tune as one he’s been working on. *
He stops. LIGHTS UP ON ROCK STAR,
dressed all in black adorned with
sequins, sitting on a chair messing
with the guitar paying no mind to *
Dillon. Dillon screams “Whoa!” in *
reference to the Rock Star, then *
“Whoa!” to the song and goes to him.) *
ROCK STAR *
Go ‘head, Dillon. It’s your song. You play. *
(Dillon takes the guitar and begins to *
jam. He arrives at the chorus and *
sings.) *
DILLON
(singing to the music) *
“Woke up from a sleepwalk/On a tightrope/over a dark
abyss./And all my brave talk/and my false hope/go down
following bliss.”
(ROCK STAR encourages him. They jam and *
bring it to a rousing conclusion). *
DILLON
Whoa! I love that little thingy thing you put at the end. I *
just didn’t know where to go with it. I can’t believe I’m *
talking to you. You know how many times I slept on sidewalks *
in the rain in my ratty old sleeping bag to buy front row *
seats to your concerts? *
ROCK STAR *

DILLON *

Since you don’t have what it takes to say it, I’ll say it for *
you. You wanted to tell her that, after I offed myself, you *
didn’t trust yourself anymore. You couldn’t imagine tomorrow. *

ROCK STAR *

DILLON *
Doesn’t make sense. *

Maybe he had tunnel vision. He only saw the problem. *
DILLON *

DILLON *

I couldn’t sleep without alcohol. I couldn’t wake up or get *
through the day without drugs. A few times I collapsed on *

the horde. I was a burned out rocker killing myself by *
inches. All I could hear was people cheering me on. People *
like you. I knew all I had to do was pick up the phone. But *
my depression made a simple call seem monumental. My life was *

But how’d you get on stage? There are guards. *
DILLON *
I’m down in the mosh pit. I say to these two bodybuilder *
dudes, Yo, grab me by the feet and help me up there. And they *
go, Dude, you might get hurt? And I say, So what, it will *
hurt worse if I don’t try! So they launch me up on stage. So *
I land on my feet! *
MAY FLOWERS *
Did you touch him? *
DILLON *
(giving her the button) *
I pulled his button off. *
MAY FLOWERS *
Did they put you in jail? *
DILLON *
They cuffed me and were gonna arrest me for incitement of *
riot in a public place but the dude said--*
(doing Rock Star’s voice) *
“I’m not pressing charges; I did the same thing when I was a *
kid.” Then he invited me up to the hotel suites with the *
band. *
MAY FLOWERS *
Whoa, Dills, Dill, king of the hill! Must’ve blown your date *

DILLON *
She sorta stood me up. I tried to call you to see if you *
wanted to go--*
MAY FLOWERS *

Suite. Penthouse Presidential Suite. It was so wordless, May. *
So they ordered like a dozen pizzas and beer and we just *
chilled. *
MAY FLOWERS *
So what’s he like? *
DILLON *
We both said the same thing about each other. We felt like *
brothers who found each other. He’s just so unbelievably...I *
don’t know...just like we knew each other since forever. *
MAY FLOWERS *
Oh, Dill, Dill, my vitamin pill! *
DILLON *
So he hands me his strat--*
MAY FLOWERS *
C’mon! *
DILLON *
And he hands me his fender strat and goes, Let me hear *
something, and I play, right, I mean, May, I made that strat *
growl like a bear. Then he picks up another strat and we *
start jammin’. *
MAY FLOWERS *
Dills, I’m gonna get a heart attack. *
DILLON *
So I look at my watch and it’s after four in the morning. He *
laughs cuz he knows I’m gonna be in trouble and goes to his *
limo driver, Take my friend home. So before I go, he says, *
You know, man, you are the NBT. I go, What’s NBT? He says, *
Next Big Thing. *
MAY FLOWERS *
Whoa! How cool was that? But what’d your parents say? *
DILLON *
Don’t ask. Lucky for me they argued half the night with each *
other about it. Like out of the blue, my dad said he wants a *
divorce. *

You made it up. She’s a friend of yours. And you lied to her. *
You lied to everyone. The police made your dad pick you up. *
DILLON *
I’m an entertainer. Like you. I was entertaining my friend *
May. *
ROCK STAR *
The Big Lie put you in a box. *
DILLON *
So who did I hurt? *
ROCK STAR *
You. When you crowned yourself the NBT, you stopped living *
for yourself. You wanted kids at school to see you as you saw *
yourself. *
DILLON *

Kids who wouldn’t give you the time of day now wanted to see *
the button, to hear how you jammed with me. *
DILLON *

If I could come back as I was or a stray dog on the street, *
I’d come back as the dog, because at least a dog can breathe *
the air and feel the sun and appreciate being alive. *
Appreciate every heartbeat. Appreciate every day. What I did *
was a mistake, my friend. An awful stupid unthinking mistake. *
I hear the same pain in you that I heard in the deepest *
recesses of my soul. *
DILLON *
You don’t know what you’re talking about, dead rocker boy. *
ROCK STAR *
You taped the T.V. coverage of my death and played it over *
and over, live rocker boy. *
DILLON *
How would you know all this? *
ROCK STAR *
But the pain was only soothed when you tried to get into my *
funeral. Guards stopped you and a thousand other fans. So you *
came up with the idea of throwing another funeral at the *
front gate of my mansion. You all made a memorial of flowers *
and teddy bears and cards to me. You tore my picture out of *
the newspaper and stuffed into cigarette pack for a coffin *
and buried me under a street sign that read ONE WAY. Kids *
busted out instruments and played my songs. It turned into a *
street party. Local, national, and world cameras swarmed *
around the famous kid who dared to jump on the stage when he *
broke into an eulogy... *
(LIGHTS INDICATE A FLASHBACK). *
DILLON *
What can you say about a dude who transformed rock before he *
was 21? His music will live forever. Better his life than be *
one of these grayhair rockers that don’t know when to quit *
the stage. He said at a concert, Better to burn out than fade *
out. I’d rather be like him...a flaming meteor streaking *
across the sky and exploding before all the world than a dull *

(Una GUITARRA ELÉCTRICA se empieza a oír. Suena como si alguien tratara de crear un ritmo. LUZ SPOT SOBRE DILLON tirado en el escenario boca arriba durmiendo. El sonido de la guitarra lo despierta. Se sienta. Mira alrededor. DILLON se pone de pie, busca el origen del sonido de guitarra que parece eludirlo. Él reconoce la melodía, es una en la que él ha estado trabajando. Dillon se detiene. LUCES SOBRE ESTRELLA DEL ROCK, vestido de negro adornado con tachas, sentado en una silla jugando con la guitarra, ignorando a Dillon. Dillon grita “¡Jo!” refiriéndose a la estrella del rock, luego “¡Jo!” a la canción y se acerca a él.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Anda, Dillon. Es tu canción. Toca.
(Dillon toma la guitarra y comienza a tocar. Llega al estribillo y comienza a cantar.)
DILLON
(cantando al compás de la música)
“Me desperté sonámbulo/sobre la cuerda floja/sobre un oscuro abismo./Y toda mi soberbia/y mis falsas esperanzas/se van abajo siguiendo un sueño.”
(ESTRELLA DEL ROCK lo alienta. Se ponen a tocar juntos y lo llevan a un final excitante).
DILLON
¡Vaya! Me fascina esa cosita que le agregaste al final. Yo no sabía adónde ir desde allí. No puedo creer que te estoy hablando. No te imaginas cuántas veces he dormido en las aceras en la lluvia en mi bolsa de dormir toda vieja y destartalada para conseguir los primeros asientos para tus conciertos.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Once.
DILLON
¿Cómo lo sabes?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Tú eres el mocoso que saltó al escenario y me arrancó un botón de la camisa.
DILLON
¿Me recuerdas?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
¿Cómo no voy a recordar al lunático que hasta se jactaba de haber sido esposado y registrado en la comisaría?
DILLON
Ah, por eso sabes mi nombre. La policía te contó. Yo quería que sepas, sabes, lo mucho que te agradezco que no hayas presentado cargos. La fotografía en el periódico no estaba tan mal, ¿eh? ¡Primera página!
(DILLON posa como en la fotografía, arrancando un botón de la camisa de ESTRELLA DEL ROCK.)
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Eso fue estúpido.
DILLON
Mi mejor momento.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
¿Quebrar la ley?
DILLON
Estar en el escenario.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
No es así cómo se supone que tienes que llegar allí.
DILLON
Oye, déjame tranquilo, ¿OK? Oye, soy un fanático. Compro tu música. Voy a tus conciertos. Conozco todas tus letras de memoria. Hago que otros chicos te sigan. DILLON
Yo no necesito la ayuda de nadie. Sólo pasaba a saludar.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Pasar a saludar hizo que llegaras tarde a clase.
DILLON
¿Y qué? Da la casualidad que es la profesora más querida de la escuela. ¿Qué es esto, la Inquisición?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Tú sabes que ella conoce tu ánimo. Tenías la esperanza de que se diera cuenta de que algo andaba mal. Esperabas que ella notara tu dolor.
DILLON
¿Mi dolor? ¿Qué dolor?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
El dolor de sentirte tan pequeño y tan solo que te está volviendo loco.
DILLON
Tú no sabes nada de mi dolor.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Sí, Dillon, y estoy aquí para ayudar.
DILLON
Nadie sabe lo que pasa en mi cabeza.

DILLON

DILLON

(Golpe)

ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Sería igual si estuvieras muerto si no hablas con alguien.
DILLON
Oye, tú no eres más que una raya en mi CD, ¿ok?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Tomaste el camino equivocado, Dillon. Necesitas volver.
DILLON
¿Volver? ¿Cómo se puede volver?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK

Me impresiona cómo me puedes decir eso a la cara cuando sabes perfectamente que tienes una carta de despedida allí mismo en tu bolsillo.
DILLON

(ENTRA LA CONCIENCIA DE DILLON vestida como una puritana. Sonido Nº2)
CONCIENCIA
¿Qué voz quejumbrosa en el yermo enuncia mi nombre?
DILLON
¿Y quién es esa?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Tu conciencia.
DILLON
¿Mi conciencia?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Por supuesto.
DILLON

ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
¿Nunca se conocieron?
DILLON
¿Por qué tiene zapatos de carrera?

Nadie corre más rápido que la conciencia.

¿A qué adviene vuestro escepticismo, o somnámbulo? Toda vez que agraviáis a vuestra interioridad, ¿acaso no sabéis que os agraváis a vos mismo? Porque yo soy vos y vos sois yo.
DILLON

CONCIENCIA
Vuestra completa falta de elocuencia os confina a una total exigüidad de espíritu.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Para hacerla fácil, no le impresiona tu forma de hablar.
CONCIENCIA
¿Por qué razón o extraña circunstancia veláis aquesa misiva referente a vuestra privación intencionada de la vida?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Quiere decir la carta.
DILLON
Listo. Le capté el mensaje y me voy a otra parte.
CONCIENCIA
Vos os evadís pues advertís con ciencia cierta que no prevaleceréis en mi presencia.
DILLON

Ni preguntes. Por suerte se pasaron la mitad de la noche peleándose entre ellos por mi culpa. Y después, de la nada, mi papá dice que quiere el divorcio.

Dill, tú no causaste eso, ¿me oyes?
DILLON
Ya sé. Pero igual. No importa.
MAY FLOWERS
Los chicos no te pueden llamar roquerito nunca más. No con esa foto en el diario.

DILLON

DILLON
¿Y a quién lastimé?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
A ti. Cuando te coronaste el PNU, dejaste de vivir como tú mismo. Querías que los chicos de la escuela te vieran como tú te veías a ti mismo.
DILLON
Cállate.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Chicos que antes ni te daban la hora ahora querían ver el botón, querían escuchar cómo tocaste la guitarra conmigo.
DILLON
Cállate.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Pero cuando yo me fui, se fue la tierra bajo tus pies. La gente hueca que te seguía, sólo te veía en mi sombra. Ése el nombre de tu dolor. Pensaste que podías crear una realidad y ser yo. Bueno, pues déjame contarte sobre mí, PNU.
DILLON

Si yo pudiera volver como yo era o como un perro callejero, yo volvería como el perro, porque un perro puede al menos respirar el aire y sentir el sol y apreciar estar vivo. Agradecer cada latido. Agradecer cada día. Lo que yo hice fue un error, mi amigo. Un horrible, estúpido e insensato error. Oigo el mismo dolor en ti que el que oí en las profundidades de mi alma.
DILLON
No sabes lo que dices, roquerito muerto.
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Tú grabaste la cobertura de mi muerte y la viste una y otra y otra vez, roquerito vivo.
DILLON
¿Cómo sabes todo esto?
ESTRELLA DEL ROCK
Pero el dolor sólo calmó cuando trataste de entrar en mi funeral. Los guardias no te dejaron entrar ni a ti ni a otros miles de fans. Entonces se te ocurrió la idea de organizar otro funeral en frente de la mansión. Todos juntos hicieron el recordatorio de flores y ositos de peluche y tarjetas para mí. Recortaste mi imagen de un periódico y la metiste en una cajetilla de cigarrillos como un ataúd y me enterraste bajo una señal de tránsito que decía UNA VÍA. Los chicos sacaron sus instrumentos y tocaron mis canciones. Se transformó en una fiesta callejera. Las cámaras locales, nacionales y mundiales giraban en torno al chico famoso que se había atrevido a saltar al escenario mientras dirigía sus últimas palabras al difunto…
(LAS LUCES INDICAN UN FLASHBACK)
DILLON
¿Qué se puede decir del tipo que transformó el rock antes de los veintiún años? Su música vivirá por siempre. Mejor su vida antes que ser uno de esos roqueros canosos que no saben cuándo retirarse del escenario. Él había dicho en un concierto, Mejor irse en llamas que apagarse lentamente. Yo prefiero ser como él… un cometa en llamas surcando el cielo y explotar ante todo el mundo antes que ser una estrellita insulsa allá lejos en el universo del rock.
