Programmer and language specialist, working mainly in the fields of IT/computing, business and education. I have a degree in Modern Languages from Oxford University (UK), an MPhil in Linguistics from Cambridge University (UK) and am a Sun-Certified Java Programmer.
Over the last 10 years or so, I have translated a wide variety of documents for large companies (such as international IT and energy companies, consulting agencies, engineering firms, national newspapers) right down to individuals and small businesses needing the translation of their web site.
My fluency in French and Spanish comes largely for having lived in France and Mexico for a combined total of several years as well has having studied these languages to a high level. Thus, I generally translate between French, Spanish and English, working with other native speakers of French and Spanish where appropriate.
As well as a translator, I am a professional programmer. I have spent a number of years working as a full-time programmer in a commercial environment in the UK, and continue to work on freelance IT projects.
As well as working on French/English translation (and in fact translations in other language pairs), I deveop and manage several web sites for students, educators and language professionals working in French and Spanish. These sites include:
On a separate page, I also maintain a Spanish-English computing glossary. Suggestions for new material for the sites is always welcome, with new features announced in the Español-Inglés development blog;
an automatic French/English translation tool, which provides a 'commented translation' building on the Google Translate engine;
making the dictionary more "clicky" (providing more directed contextual help to on-line dictionary users.
Some of the computational techniques that I use are also described in various Java tutorials that I have written, which deal with various tricky programming topics, some related to the fields of text processing and computational linguistics, such as:
a guide to hash functions, a key technique in certain areas of text and data processing
text compression in Java, tailoring the existing compression library to better deal with text
the Java regular expression library, with the example of text mining and HTML scraping using regular expressions
