About me

Programmer and language specialist, working mainly in the fields of IT/computing and business.

I deveop and manage two web sites for students, educators and language professionals working in French and Spanish. These sites include an on-line French dictionary and Spanish dictionary, various pages of basic phrases in the two languages, plus on-line language games to help learners. On a separate page, I am also compiling a Spanish-English computing glossary. Suggestions for new material for the sites is always welcome, with new features announced in each site's respective development blog.

Other projects I am working on in the field of education and computational linguistics include:

  • an automatic French/English translation tool, which builds on the Google Translate engine;
  • making the dictionary more "clicky" (providing more directed contextual help to on-line dictionary users);
  • improving corpus-based approaches to dictionary compilation and providing better information in entries based on an Internet-based corpus (see the Spanish dictionary's "word profiles" when you look up a word);
  • a French-English bilingual search engine which I use in researching translations;
  • providing directed feedback in on-line learning tools (see the interactive tutorial on ser and estar);
  • an on-line language identifier, which currently recognises several Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages, with more to be added soon.
