Kremlin Approves Sino-Russian Petroleum Trade and Pipeline Deal

00:48 April 14, 2009 Source: Xinhua News Agency

The Russian Government held a meeting on the 13th to ratify the petroleum trade and pipeline agreement signed between China and Russia during February of this year.

According to Russian news agency reports, Russian Prime Minister Putin said at the meeting that the agreement to extend a branch of its Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean oil pipeline into China would establish a ‘safe and reliable market’ for the selling of Eastern Siberian petroleum to China. He said that the first stage of the Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean pipeline would be commencing operation in the near future.

The Eastern Siberia – Pacific Ocean oil pipeline runs from Taishet in Irkutsk, traveling 4000 kilometers east to Kozmino Bay on the Russian Pacific coast. The project’s first stage, approximately 2700 kilometers from Taishet to Skovorodino in the Amur region is designed to support a capacity of 30 million tons of oil per year. Through the construction of a branch pipeline from Skovorodino through to China, Russia plans to divert a portion of this oil into China, while transporting the remainder via railway to its eastern ports where it can be exported to the Asia-Pacific region.

On the 17th February this year, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the Russian oil pipeline firm Transneft signed a deal for the design, construction, and operation of a pipeline running from Skovorodino to the Chinese border, as well as signing respective long term crude oil trade agreements with Russian state oil company Rosneft and Transneft. Translation - English
It was possibly an unprecedented scene in the history of mankind: at dawn, before the mist had dissipated, two hundred thousand people clothed in white had already thronged the squares and streets of the city. The atmosphere was dignified as the black coffin made slow progress under the crush of the crowds that gathered round, the people humming softly: “Fly, thought, on wings of gold…”, and then afterwards the assembled multitudes joined and sang as one.

This was Milan on the 28th February 1901, and the people’s spontaneous farewell was for a great musician - in their eyes a hero – Giuseppe Verdi, the virtuoso who through rare talent and perseverance crafted 26 operas and an oratorio Requiem during his lifetime. The masses who gathered to see him off transformed their sorrow into beautiful song, heart rendering melodies that reverberated through the early morning air.
“Fly, thought, on wings of gold…” is a line from the famous chorus of Verdi’s masterpiece Nabucco - the crowd was singing the master’s own music to farewell him, using the master’s own music to pour out their love and respect.
How then, did Verdi come to earn the devotion of all Milan and become an Italian hero, and after the passing of more than a hundred years, why does he still captivate people all over the world? What exactly is this peculiar charisma that he exudes, the soul-stirring power that pervades his operas? What shaped him and led him to grow into the greatest composer of the 19th century – the heroic genius of the Italian people?
