As people we embrace the familiar. What we don't understand we may reject, ignore or even scorn. The important things are often taken for granted in our fast-paced world. The chaos of daily life leaves no time for devoting our thoughts to abstract concepts and lofty ideas. We have absolutely no patience for art.
When art becomes the marketing itself and is presented in a style embraced by generations, the artist has delivered. These signs have been around us for years, but only now do we understand that each of us has become the product. When the messages become clear, our participation in the arts is exposed.
We are involved despite our best efforts to the contrary. The more we deny that we are the products of what we desire, the more relevance these signs have to us. The revelation that even our values have a price should stagger us, but we are too busy window-shopping for vices to notice.
If it's newer, it's better. If we need it now, we can get it now. The more there is, the more we want. The closer technology brings us together, the less space we have to share with one another. Living simply is not simpel enough, so we muck it up while trying to improve upon life.
As we tear down the traditions, which have allowed us our livelihoods, the signs serve to remind us of our true self-worth. Timeless relics with a modern appeal, these colorful banners bring together the obvious and the oblivious, merge the past with the present and paint a picture of what we have committed to as a people.
The social impact of these signs is softened by their humor and tempered by the chills of self-awareness they produce. The isolation we feel upon reflection is what binds us together, and thus the signs have taken us full circle. If we had followed the signs all along, we would have gotten it by now. Als mensen omarmen we het bekende. Wat we niet begrijpen kunnen we afwijzen, negeren of zelfs minachten. De belangrijke dingen worden dikwijls als vanzelfsprekend beschouwd in onze haastige wereld. De chaos van het dagelijks leven laat geen tijd om onze gedachten te wijden aan abstracte concepten en verheven ideeën. We hebben absoluut geen geduld voor kunst.
Wanneer kunst de marketing zelf wordt en gepresenteerd wordt in een stijl die generaties omarmen, heeft de kunstenaar aan de verwachtingen voldaan. Deze tekenen omringen ons al jaren, maar we begrijpen nu pas dat ieder van ons het produkt is geworden. Wanneer de boodschap duidelijk wordt, wordt ons aandeel in de kunst aan het licht gebracht.
We zijn betrokken, ook al proberen we nog zo hard dat niet te zijn. Hoe luider we ontkennen dat we het produkt zijn van onze verlangens, des sterker zijn deze tekenen op ons van toepassing. De openbaring dat zelfs onze waarden een prijs hebben zou ons moeten onthutsen, maar we zijn te druk met etalages kijken om tekortkomingen op te merken.
Als het nieuwer is, is het beter. Als we het nu nodig hebben, kunnen we het nu krijgen. Hoe meer er is, des te meer willen we hebben. Hoe dichter technologie ons bij elkaar brengt, des te minder ruimte hebben we om te delen met elkaar. Eenvoudig leven is niet eenvoudig genoeg, dus we maken er een zooitje van terwijl we het leven proberen te verbeteren.
Terwijl we de tradities afbreken, die onze middelen van bestaan mogelijk maakten, herinneren de tekenen ons aan onze werkelijke eigenwaarde. Als tijdloze relikwieën in een modern jasje brengen deze kleurrijke vaandels het voor de hand liggende en het vergetene bij elkaar, ze smelten heden en verleden samen en schetsen een beeld van wat wij als mensen op ons hebben genomen.
De sociale impact van deze tekenen wordt verzacht door hun geestigheid en getemperd door de koude rillingen van zelfbewustzijn die ze veroorzaken. De eenzaamheid die we ervaren wanneer we ons bezinnen bindt ons samen, en zo is de cirkel weer rond. Als we de tekenen de hele tijd in het oog hadden gehouden, zouden we het inmiddels begrepen hebben. De boodschap is duidelijk.
