My name is Daphne Clare D'Aguiar. I was born in 1951 in Porto, Portugal. My mother was english and my father portuguese. Soon after I was born my parents divorced.
We spoke in english at home and portuguese everywhere else including portuguese schools following the portuguese curriculum.
In 1972 I decided to leave Portugal to come and live in England following my mother who had since remarried, this time to an englishman. For 7 years I worked as a receptionist for the Portuguese Tourist Office in London (1972 - 1979). I left the Portuguese Tourist Office in 1979 to start a family with my english husband.
Whilst working for the Tourist Office in London I had the opportunity of working also as a translator, translating from English to Portuguese and vice-versa. I have also served as an interpreter mainly accompanying portuguese people to see consultants in Harley Street, London.
Another activity I have been involved in is doing voice-overs for commercials using my native language (Portuguese). One of them was for the motor company ‘Ford,’ the other was for Christian Aid in which I spoke Brazilian Portuguese.
