Zeit genug, die Hütten aufzubauen. Auf der grasbewachsenen Lichtung spielten schon Kinder, hier und da lagen Bündel im Gras. Die Männer, die schon früher angekommen waren, hatten sie dort abgelegt, wo sie später ihre Hütten haben wollten, und waren gleich auf die Jagd gegangen. Die Frauen mit den Kindern hatten sich mehr Zeit gelassen bei ihrer Wanderung, weil sie unterwegs noch Pilze und Wurzeln sammeln wollten. Arobanai rieb ihren Körper im Wasser ab. Es war schön ein neues Lager frisch zu betreten, den Staub und Schweiß der Wanderung und aller früheren Lager von sich abzuwaschen. Ein neues Lager war immer ein neuer Anfang, voll neuer Möglichkeiten und Aussichten. Sie schüttelte das Wasser aus ihrem kurzen, krausen Haar und watete zum Ufer zurück. Dann hob sie ihr Bündel hoch über den Kopf und trug es durch den Fluß ans andere Ufer. Sie wusste, wenn sie so die Arme hob, ragten ihre festen Brüste noch angriffslustiger hervor, und das Wasser des Flusses ließ ihren Körper glänzen und all seine Formen noch schöner zur Geltung kommen. Drüben traten gerade die ersten jungen Burschen mit ihrer Jagdbeute aus dem Wald.

The women who had children had allowed themselves more time during their journey because they wanted to gather mushrooms and roots on the way. Arobanai rubbed down her body in the water. It was lovely to walk into a new camp and to wash off all the dust and sweat of the trek and of all the earlier camps. A new camp was always a new beginning, full of new possibilities and prospects. She shook the water out of her short, curly hair and waded back to the riverbank. Then she lifted her bundle high over her head and carried it through the river to the other side. She knew, when she lifted her arms that way, that her hard breasts protruded even more forcefully, and the water from the river made her body shine, and all its shapes appeared even more beautiful. On the other side, the first boys stepped out of the forest with their kill.

Native English speaker with MA in English Literature and Language (Diplom-Anglist), BA English/German Literature (University of California) and graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I was born in Alaska (my German ancestor got off the boat in New Orleans in 1848) and attended primary and secondary school in Alaska, Colorado, London, Aachen/Germany (four years) and California. Work experience: Mexican and U.S. university English instructor (EFL, English composition) and five years as a German Gymnasium English (EFL) teacher. In 1997, I retired from a US civil service career as a teacher and education specialist with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the US Army. In Alabama, I worked as a course developer and program manager for environmental training programs for the Army Corps of Engineers. As a Ft Sill Artillery School instructor trainer I taught methods of instruction to Army officers and NCOs (Oklahoma). As Chief of the Contract Training Division for the US Army in Europe, I served for 7 years as contracting officer's representative and training administrator of programs for soldiers throughout Europe. My work as COR included writing requests for contract proposals and administering contracts. I lived and worked in Germany for twenty years and visit Germany and the US once a year.
