In mijn werk als free lance vertaler vraagt men regelmatig om een voorbeeld van mijn werk of om een referentie van een vorige opdrachtgever. Ik moet hier altijd een beetje om lachen.
Als eerste: wat voor nut heeft het voor potentiële opdrachtgevers om te weten wat ik voor een vorige opdrachtgever heb gedaan? Als ik daarop zelf een antwoord mag geven: helemaal niets. Het enige wat je ermee bereikt is dat je uit kunt vissen welke tekst ik heb vertaald, en tegenwoordig is dan ook vrij gemakkelijk te achterhalen voor wie ik dat werk heb gedaan. Leuk voor hun concurrentie!
Ten tweede: als je van mij die voorbeelden krijgt, wie garandeert je dan dat ik mijn werk voor jouw project niet onbedoeld aan een directe concurrent geef als voorbeeld? Dat zou je vast niet waarderen, net zoals mijn vorige opdrachtgevers dat niet zouden waarderen.
Als je enigszins twijfelt, laat me dan een korte vertaling voor je maken van bijvoorbeeld een krante-artikel. Ik ben altijd bereid om mijn kundigheid te demonstreren en ik denk dat een kort artikel van omgeveer 500 woorden een goed beeld zal geven van mijn vaardigheden. Jij mag het krante-artikel kiezen!

As a free lance translator people regularly ask me for a sample of my work or for an endorsement of a previous client. This always puts a smile on my face.
First: what good would it do for potential customers to know what work I have done for previous employers? If I may answer that myself: absolutely nothing. The only thing you would achieve is that you can see what text I have translated, and nowadays it is relatively simple to deduct for whom I did that work. Very nice for their competitors!
Second: if I give you these samples, what guarantee do you have that I don’t hand out my work for you to one of your direct competitors? You wouldn’t appreciate that, and neither would my former clients.
If you hesitate a little, let me translate something for you, say a short newspaper article. I am always willing to demonstrate my skills and I think that a short article of approximately 500 words will give you an accurate insight into my skills. You pick the article!
