At a Glance - One of the Best Known Landmarks in Europe
In 1958, Brussels, Belgium was host to the first major World's Fair since the end of WWII. Nearly 15,000 workers spent three years building the site on the Heysel plateau located seven kilometres northwest of the city. Expo '58, which had over 42 million visitors, is best known for a giant 102-meter high structure called the Atomium. Conceived as a monument for world peace and prosperity, the structure consists of nine steel spheres connected to form the shape of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. The nine interconnected atoms also represent the nine regions of Belgium. The connecting tubes enclose escalators to exhibit halls and other public spaces contained within the nine spheres. Throughout the Atomium are interactive information kiosks equipped with X displays to inform and entertain the curious onlookers.

Près de 15 000 ouvriers ont construit pendant trois ans cet édifice sur le plateau du Heysel, situé à sept kilomètres au nord-ouest de la ville. L’ Expo '58 qui a attiré plus de 42 millions de visiteurs est célèbre pour la structure géante de plus de 102 mètres de hauteur appelée Atomium. Conçue comme un monument pour la paix internationale et la prospérité, la structure est formée de neuf sphères reliées entre elles et symbolise un cristal de fer agrandi 165 milliards de fois. Les neuf atomes interconnectés représentent également les neuf régions de la Belgique. Les tubes qui les relient renferment des escalators menant à des halls d’expositions et à différents espaces publics à l’intérieur des neuf sphères. Dans l’ensemble de l’Atomium sont dispersées des bornes de renseignements interactives équipées d’écrans X afin d’informer et de divertir les promeneurs curieux.

The "My ProZ.com" menu was moved up here to simplify the main navigation, and to keep all of this type of information together. I cannot find something If you are having trouble finding something with the new menu, please submit a support request.
