All forests contain environmental and social values, such as wildlife habitat, watershed protection or an archaeological site. Where these values are considered to be of outstanding significance or critical importance, the forest can be defined as a High Conservation Value Forest. The key to the concept of High Conservation Value Forests is the identification of High Conservation Values. High Conservation Values were first defined by the Forest Stewardship Council for use in forest certification, but the concept is increasingly being used by other initiatives, mapping, conservation and natural resource planning and advocacy as well as company’s purchasing policies and recently has begun to appear in discussions and policies of government agencies.
High Conservation Value Forests are those forests that need to be appropriately managed in order to maintain or enhance the identified High Conservation Values. A High Conservation Value Forest may be a small part of a larger forest, for example a riparian zone protecting a stream that is the sole supply of drinking water to a community or a small patch of a rare ecosystem. In other cases, the High Conservation Value Forest may be the whole of a forest management unit, for example when the forest contains several threatened or endangered species that range throughout the forest. Any forest type – boreal, temperate or tropical, natural or plantation can potentially be a High Conservation Value Forest, because High Conservation Value Forest designation relies solely on the presence of High Conservation Values within the forest.

Toate pădurile au valori de mediu şi sociale, ca şi habitate ale vieţii sălbatice, sau pentru protecţia bazinelor hidrografice torenţiale sau ca sit arheologic. Acolo unde aceste valori sunt considerate a fi de o importanţă excepţională sau critică, pădurea poate fi definită ca o “pădure cu valori ridicate de conservare”. Cheia conceptului de păduri cu valori ridicate de conservare este reprezentată de identificarea valorilor ridicate de conservare. Valorile ridicate de conservare au fost definite prima dată de FSC pentru a fi folosite în certificarea pădurilor, dar conceptul este folosit din ce în ce mai mult de alte iniţiative, în procesul de cartografiere, conservare şi gestionare a resurselor naturale şi de promovare, ca şi în elaborarea politicilor de achiziţionare ale companiilor şi recent a început să apară în discuţiile şi politicile agenţiilor guvernamentale.
Pădurile cu valori ridicate de conservare sunt acele păduri care trebuie să fie gestionate corespunzător pentru a menţine şi spori valorile ridicate de conservare identificate. O pădure cu valori ridicate de conservare poate fi o suprafaţă mică dintr-o pădure mai mare, de exemplu o zonă riverană care protejează un pârâu care este singura sursă de apă potabilă pentru o comunitate sau o fâşie mică de ecosistem rar. În alte cazuri, pădurea cu valori ridicate de conservare poate fi întreaga unitate de management forestier, de exemplu atunci când pădurea conţine câteva specii ameninţate cu dispariţia care apar pe suprafaţa întregii păduri. Orice tip de pădure – boreală, temperată sau tropicală, naturală sau artificială poate fi o potenţială pădure cu valori ridicate de conservare, fiindcă identificarea unei păduri cu valori ridicate de conservare se bazează doar pe prezenţa valorilor ridicate de conservare din pădure.

Studied at and graduated from the Faculty of Language and Literature, Transilvania University, Brasov-Romania. My main subject was English Language and Literature.
After graduating, I have worked as an in-house translator and PR-manager in the Forest Research and Management Institute, Romsilva and Ministry of Waters and Forestry, Bucharest-Romania.
In 2004, I have moved to Finland, for family reasons. Here, I have learnt both Finnish and Swedish.
