The latest London Fashion Week to-date took place between the 18th and the 22nd of September 2006 in various venues of the capital. “SS/07” heralded the new trends for next summer.
This event is organized by the British Fashion Council and is intended to professionals of the industry, be they buyers or press. The role of buyers is to spend the funds allocated by retailers like Selfridges for instance in designer clothes while that of journalists is to convey the information about new developments in fashion, whether it concerns the return of the mac or any other novelty. The fashion economy being the 7th most important at global level, it is certainly everything but superficial, for after all, we all need to dress.
Main characteristics of this presentation :
¨ Return of the classics or new basics : “Sloan Square attack” ! Vests, blouses, pearl necklaces, pastel hues, pinstripe, silk scarf worn as a belt or as a bracelet, and deconstructed mac… Discretion is the motto of a generation tired of trying to be original on a worldwide basis. Déjà vu is everywhere but this is what’s interesting because you get to distinguish the true players through this kind of style gymnastics. Note Noel Stewart’s hats, the new Philip Treacy ?
¨ The ever coming back 80’s revival, with day-glo and high waist, enough I say!!!
¨ Hair: neglected plaits (upper class getting nasty style) and buns.
¨ Shoulders still emerge from cute tube tops/dresses.
¨ Puff, pleats, layers and flounces replace the draped effect, and everything round is bound to please (shoes, bag shapes, necks).
¨ Attitude gives the silhouette a je-ne-sais-quoi that brings credibility to the fashionista, as long as she is slim, or even skinny, looks unhappy with an effort to magnify her garments, she faints sickness with a pale complexion, as in « No, I am not dead nor on drugs, just super stylish » !)
Creative designers were, (among many others but I only have one page,) this time : Gareth Pugh with his conceptual show which proved that fashion can be intelligent AND wearable ; Manish Arora’s ethno-excentricity stood out from the uniform crowd. This will be a hot summer indeed.
For the general public or mere mortals, the BFC tent awaits us in South Ken’ from the 27 of September to the 1st of October.

La dernière semaine de présentation des collections de prêt-à-porter anglais, ou la London Fashion Week s’est déroulée du 18 au 22 septembre 2006 en divers endroits de la capitale, annonçant les nouvelles tendances pour l’été prochain : SS/07 pour « Spring Summer 2007 ».
Cette manifestation, organisée par le British Fashion Council, l’équivalent de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture à Paris, s’adresse aux professionnels de l’industrie de la mode, qu’ils soient acheteurs pour des grands magasins comme Selfridges par exemple, ou journalistes qui relaieront l’information, car oui le retour de la rayure au détriment du pois est une information, et de taille : l’économie de la mode et du textile étant la 7ème mondiale, elle n’est pas à prendre à la légère, l’habillement faisant partie des besoins primaires de tout être humain.
Les principales caractéristiques repérées :
¨ Retour des grands classiques ou nouveaux basiques : reprise des codes bourgeois comme les gilets, chemisiers, colliers de perle, tons pastel, de la rayure tennis en passant par le carré de soie revisité et le trench déconstruit… la discrétion est de mise pour contrer l’originalité mondialisée. Un air de déjà vu plane sur tous les podiums mais c’est justement au travers de ces exercices de style qu’on repère les créatifs. A noter, les chapeaux de Noel Stewart, le nouveau Philip Treacy ?
¨ Le sempiternel revival 80’s, avec fluorescence et taille réhaussée à la clé, assez !!!
¨ Coiffure : on se tresse les cheveux d’un air négligé (la bourgeoise encanaillée) ou on se les « chignonne ».
¨ La partie du corps à l’honneur est l’épaule car le bustier n’a pas encore dit son dernier mot.
¨ Le bouffant, le plissé et les volants remplacent le drapé, et tout ce qui est rond est bon (bout des chaussures, formes des sacs, cols et jupe ou robes-boule toujours d’actualité).
¨ L’attitude donne à la silhouette ce je-ne-sais-quoi qui montre qu’on a capté la « façon » du moment : donc, on est non seulement plutôt mince, voire maigre, on se complait à faire la gueule pour se donner un genre « j’ai des problèmes donc une vie intéressante » (on aura compris que ça sert en fait à mettre en valeur la tenue) et on affiche une peau assez pâle pour laisser croire qu’on est malade (après le porno-chic, l’héroïne-chic, le nude-chic, voici le sick-chic !)
Les créateurs ayant été dignes de ce nom furent en cette occasion : Gareth Pugh qui a joué la carte conceptuelle cash portant à réfléchir sans être toutefois importable ; et Manish Arora qui nous a gratifié d’un chouia d’ethno-excentricité bienvenue dans un monde parfois trop uniforme. Bref, malgré tout, l’été sera show.
Pour le commun des mortels ou « grand public », une tente du BFC est dressée à South Ken’ avec tout plein d’évènements modeux, du 27 septembre au 1er octobre.
