To all employees:
We are just completing what was a very challenging year for our industry, our customers and ourselves.
Throughout the year, along with our quarterly results announcements, I have kept you informed on our financial performance, and on how economic conditions were affecting our revenues.
I also highlighted how important our cost-reduction initiatives were in protecting our financial position and securing our future.
As our year-end has arrived, I would like to provide you with an update, and share some good news. While slowly improving, the economy is still struggling to recover from what has been described by many as the worst global recession in 70 years.
In most of our markets, the mood is more positive and our customers are working with us to define strategies adapted to the current market conditions.
However our customers' purchasing decisions are still very much influenced by the impact this recession had on them.
Our 2010 forecast is that conditions will slowly improve, but not as fast as we would like.
I am happy to share with you that as a whole we have done a very good job at protecting our company and it appears, through discussions with our customers and partners, that we have done better than the industry in general.
We were successful in protecting our market share by not losing a significant number of projects and by protecting our installed base from an obvious risk of erosion during such difficult times for our customers.
Our cautious approach and perspective for 2010 is in line with our customers’ and partners’ perspectives and expectations.
On the bright side, as a result of our selective investments throughout 2009, we are confident that we will be able to generate additional revenues in 2010 with Virtual Showroom, Virtual Planner, 20-20 Closet Design, 20-20 Countertop Design, Fusion for Bathroom, inSight, Shopware and 20-20 CAD within existing and new markets.
Given the current and anticipated economic and market conditions, during our recent Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings, we reviewed the feasibility of lifting our current cost-reduction program.
We came to the conclusion that, while it is important to maintain a prudent approach with our finances, we had sufficient confidence in the progressive improvement of our business to start gradually working towards re-establishing regular working conditions.
As of Q1 - November 1st
Consequently, as of November 1st, we will reinstate regular salaries, meaning that any employee impacted by a salary reduction for FY09 will see his guaranteed or variable salary for FY10 go back to its regular level.
We will also reinstate employer contributions to the 401(k) plan in the USA.

En cette fin d’année, je tiens à vous communiquer quelques bonnes nouvelles. Malgré un lent redressement, l’économie peine toujours à se remettre de ce que beaucoup ont appelé la pire récession mondiale en 70 ans.

Case 9: The Greyhound Passenger
A Canadian was diagnosed with infectious TB while living (illegally) in the United States. After only 10 days of treatment she disappeared. Upon investigation there were reliable reports that she had left the country to visit family, so she was placed on the CDC border watch list, in the hope that if/when she returned to the United States she would be “found” and brought back into treatment. About a month later, she was apprehended on a Greyhound bus at the Windsor-Detroit border crossing when U.S. border officials checked passengers’ documents. She was transferred to Canadian custody, hospitalized in Windsor, and found to be still infectious with TB. She refused to give any information to Canadian public health officials about her travels, where she had stayed in the four weeks since leaving her U.S. home, or who she had been in contact with. The only verifiable information was that she had boarded the Greyhound bus that afternoon in Toronto, bound for Detroit.
Greyhound does not collect any passenger or seating information, so there was no way to identify other passengers on the bus, other than the 15 who did cross the border and could be identified via U.S. border records. There were 27 other passengers who got off in Windsor before the border crossing; most had travelled from Toronto, but 12 of them had boarded in London (i.e. a one-hour trip versus the four-hour trip from Toronto to Windsor).
The patient was held to be moderately, not highly, infectious. There is no evidence about transmission rates for TB on buses, only flights longer than eight hours are followed up, and many health units would not consider four hours of exposure to be significant. Two of this patient’s three children were tuberculin skin test positive, but the follow-up with her contacts in the United States showed no evidence of transmission outside of the household.

Lors d'un séjour (illégal) aux États-Unis, une Canadienne a reçu un diagnostic de tuberculose infectieuse. Après seulement dix jours de traitement, elle disparaît dans la nature. Selon des informations fiables provenant d'une enquête, elle a quitté le pays pour rendre visite à sa famille. On l'inscrit alors sur la liste de surveillance frontalière de Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dans l'espoir de la « retrouver » au cas où elle retournerait aux États-Unis pour lui faire reprendre le traitement. Le degré d'infection de la patiente a été jugé modéré. On ne dispose pas de données sur les taux de transmission de la tuberculose dans les bus. Seuls les vols d'une durée supérieure à huit heures font l'objet du suivi. D'ailleurs, de nombreux services de santé publique ne considéreraient pas une exposition de quatre heures comme importante. Chez deux des trois enfants de la patiente, un test cutané à la tuberculine s'est avéré positif, mais le suivi auprès de ses contacts aux États-Unis n'a révélé aucun signe de transmission à l'extérieur du ménage.
