Any objections, Lady?
SAMUS (OFF)
The thumbs-up sign had been used
by the Galactic Federation for ages.
Me,
I was known for giving the thumbs-down during briefing.
I had my reasons, though...
Commander Adam Malkovich was normally
cool and not one to joke around,
but he would end all of his mission briefings by saying,
"Any objections, Lady?"
He was joking, but others weren't...
At the time I felt surrounded by people
who trated me like a child
or used kid gloves because I was a woman.
And yet, with Adam, I was grateful for the nod...
My past has left me with an uneasy soul,
and as result, it touched me on some level that Adam would
acknowledge that past by calling me something delicate-
like "Lady".
And I knew more than anyone that every
word from Adam was deliberate.
My thumbs-down was a twofold response-
a sign of derision at being called a lady,
and a signal of my complete understanding of the mission orders.
The other soldiers were always willing to support me with easy
smiles despite the fact that I clearly had so much yet to learn.
Among them was Anthony.
In the face of his well-meaning behavior,
and that of the other soldiers,
my response was to become increasingly bitter.
I was a child,
always with something to prove.
A chip on my shoulder.
And I was angry.
I felt that if I let my guard down, I would easily be broken.
And beyond that,
I was scared.
But even in the naivete of my youth,
I could see in Adam's joking manner how close he felt to me.
Adam knows my past.
And he knows me better than anyone else.
Confession time.
Because I was so young when I lost both of my parents,
there's no question I saw Adam as a father figure.
When I rebelled against him, I knew I could get away with it.
And his patternal compassion in the face of my rebellion
reinforced the special bond I felt with him.
I understood well that chances were slim that I would
ever find anyone that understood me like Adam.
And yet...
When the time came, I still left his side.
I was so young.

¿Alguna objeción, señorita?
SAMUS (OFF)
Señalar con el pulgar hacia arriba
era una tradición de la Federación Galáctica
Yo...
Era conocida por señalar
con el pulgar hacia abajo.
Pero tenía mis razones.
El comandante Adam Malkovich
solía ser frío y no hacía bromas,
pero siempre acababa las instrucciones
de una misión diciendo:
"¿Alguna objeción, señorita?"
Aunque Adam bromeaba,
Y estaba furiosa.
Sentía que si bajaba la guardia,
me vendría abajo fácilmente.

About me
I am Pablo Muñoz, an English-into-Spanish translator specializing in software, website and video game localization. I love my profession and I am always looking for new translation jobs relating to video games, software, websites or IT. I also write a blog about translation called Algo más que traducir.
I worked for two years for Nintendo of Europe localizing video games from English into Spanish and testing localizations, and I have also worked as an in-house translator and localization engineer for AbroadLink, a translation and localization agency based in Granada, Spain. I graduated in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Granada in 2007, and during my last academic year I worked for the University Translation Service of said university as an English–Spanish translator and project manager. Furthermore, I was also responsible for updating the Student Guide and maintaining the website of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Granada.
Want to know more about me?
I became interested in languages and translation as a child—when I was about 10 years old, I translated from English into Spanish the instruction manual of one of my favorite video games, Might and Magic II for the Super Nintendo system, just for fun. When I was 14, I discovered the fascinating world of so-called “romhacking” and started fan-translating video games. In 1999, I founded a Spanish romhacking group called Sayans Traductions (the name is a parody of the Spanish false friend traducción –> traduction).
Since then, I translated with passion (and just for fun!) some renowned video games that I had really enjoyed in the past: Secret of Mana, The Legend of Zelda, Phantasy Star II, III and IV, Final Fantasy IV and VI… This unforgettable experience allowed me to learn many valuable things about translation and IT, as well as meeting wonderful people. When I was thinking about quitting my “hobby-job”, I got involved in a fansubbing group called Meiji no Fansub and translated from English into Spanish the subtitles for the Japanese TV shows Haibane Renmei and GunParade March.
Then I went to University. Back then, I did not know whether to study Computer Science or Translation and Interpreting. Now that I am a professional translator, I am glad I took the right decision—in the end, I managed to combine both disciplines, as I am an English–Spanish translator specializing in areas related to IT. In addition, my Translation and Interpreting studies gave me the opportunity to live in Dublin, Ireland for 9 months, which enriched me in many ways, as I improved my English language skills, met people from all around the world, and traveled to many places.
