I miei primi ricordi delle Feste mi riportano ad abitudini molto diverse da quelle di oggi.
…Dunque le Feste. Attese. Vagheggiate. Gioiose.
Cominciavano con le letterine, indirizzate ai genitori, cara mamma e caro papà, sempre le stesse con scarsa fantasia. Piene di buoni propositi: sarò buono, sarò obbediente, vi voglio bene, eccetera. Ne conservo ancora qualcuna insieme alle pagelle della prima e della seconda elementare.
L'apertura ufficiale arrivava la sera del 24 dicembre. Il cenone della vigilia. E il presepe. Anzi presepio. Ci avevano lavorato a lungo, bambini e genitori. Avevano raccolto la vellutina in campagna e nei giardini delle città. I personaggi del presepio venivano conservati da un anno all'altro e così le casette dei contadini, le pecore dei pastori, i tre Re magi, la Madonna col suo manto azzurro e San Giuseppe che non so perché risultava calvo, forse per dargli un sembiante da persona anziana e senza le tentazioni della carne. E il bambino. Il bambino Gesù, un corpicino nudo o appena velato per nascondere il sesso.
…Finita la cena, i bambini recitavano una poesiola o leggevano la letterina. Poi andavano a dormire e venivano svegliati pochi minuti prima della mezzanotte. Si formava un piccolo corteo col bimbo più piccolo in testa che portava il bambino Gesù e lo deponeva nella culla vigilata dalla mucca e dall'asino. La cerimonia finiva lì e si tornava a dormire, ma non era facile riprender sonno anche perché si sapeva che al risveglio avremmo trovato i regali.
I regali del Natale erano tuttavia leggeri. Una bambolina per le femmine, ai maschi un gioco dell'oca o il meccano che allora era in voga, abituava a una manualità molto incoraggiata dai maestri della scuola.
I grandi, genitori e altri parenti e amici, non si scambiavano regali tra loro, non era uso. L'albero di Natale ci era del tutto sconosciuto e lo stesso Babbo Natale - almeno nelle regioni del Centro e del Sud - non esisteva. Qualche vaga eco ce ne arrivava da conoscenti che abitavano a Milano e Torino. Da Roma in giù di papà Natale non si aveva notizia. | Translation - English
My earliest memories of Christmas remind me just how different life used to be.
... So, Christmas. Eagerly awaited, longed for, full of joy.
It started with the Christmas letters, addressed to our parents: “Dear Mum and Dad, ...”. What they lacked in imagination they made up for in good intentions: I’ll be good, I’ll do as I’m told, I love you, the usual stuff. I’ve still got a few, stashed away with some of my first school reports.
The celebrations officially commenced on the evening of 24 December, with the Christmas Eve dinner, and the nativity scene. Or, as it was traditionally called, the crib. Children and parents alike had worked hard, gathering moss from the countryside and town gardens. The nativity figures were kept from one year to the next, as were the farmers’ cottages, the sheep, the Three Kings, Mary with her blue cloak and Joseph, who for some obscure reason was bald, perhaps to make him look old, immune to the temptations of the flesh. And then there was the baby. Baby Jesus, his tiny body naked or barely veiled out of a sense of propriety.
…Once dinner was over, the children recited poems or read out their Christmas letters. Then off to bed, only to be woken a few minutes before midnight. There was a small procession, led by the youngest child, who carried the baby Jesus and placed him in the manger watched over by the cow and the donkey. This marked the end of the ceremony, and we went back to bed, although it was hard to go back to sleep, not least because we knew that when we woke up, there would be presents waiting for us.
Not that Christmas presents were anything special: a dolly for the girls, for the boys a board game or Meccano, which was all the rage back then, because it developed the manual skills so beloved of schoolteachers.
The grown-ups – parents, other relatives and friends – didn’t exchange presents; it just wasn’t done. The Christmas tree was completely unknown to us, and Father Christmas didn’t even exist – at least in central and southern Italy. Vague rumours reached us from acquaintances in Milan and Turin, but south of Rome no one had heard of Father Christmas.

George Harrison era il mediano dei Beatles. Mediano geniale (non ci avrebbe regalato Something e Here Comes the Sun). Ma, comunque, un mediano. La mezzala era Paul McCartney. L’ala sinistra, senza dubbio, John Lennon. E con due così là davanti, i Fab Four potevano permettersi di tenere in squadra anche Ringo Starr, il Gamarra della situazione.
Il ragionamento, se ci pensate, si può estendere a famiglie, uffici, coppie, redazioni, associazioni e circoli ricreativi.
...Dimenticavo: ci sono quelli nati per fare gli arbitri. Ne conosciamo tutti: ogni volta che sorge una discussione, sentiamo nelle orecchie il loro antipatico fischietto. Non è una faccenda acustica, naturalmente. Il fischio può diventare un’occhiata, un silenzio, una smorfia, una particolare inclinazione della testa. L’uomo-nato-arbitro – o la donna: questa è una categoria dove molte femmine arrivano a livelli d’eccellenza – vuole decidere, stabilire, pacificare, mettere d’accordo. Anzi: dirimere. Il motto dell’arbitro per vocazione è: «Io dirimo».
Per dirimere – un’attività che gli procura un piacere quasi fisico – l’arbitro sceglie toni concilianti, oppure parole dure: dipende dalla sua personalità, e da come s’è svegliato quel mattino. Poi assegna punizioni (dirette, indirette), richiami, ammonizioni, occasionali espulsioni (in seguito si riunisce con la sua coscienza e stabilisce le giornate di squalifica).
Non c’è ufficio, compagnia, associazione o famiglia che non sia dotata di un arbitro. Talvolta è la persona più saggia, spesso la più impicciona. Nessuno le ha chiesto niente. Ma lei accorre, saltellando attraverso il campo della nostra vita. Ho litigato col mio fidanzato-portiere; di che t’impicci?, ragiona la ragazza-ala sinistra. Ma lui, l’arbitro, arriva con la faccetta compunta e la soluzione pronta. E magari il fidanzato viene cacciato, quando sarebbe stato sufficiente un richiamo verbale.
E i guardalinee, direte voi? Certo, ci sono anche loro. Aiutano l’arbitro a prendere le decisioni nella vita degli altri. Il tipico guardalinee si sente realizzato quando segnala un fuorigioco sospetto. Per esempio: voi siete a cena per lavoro con una bella collega, lui vi vede, riferisce al direttore di gara – non chiedete quale gara, lo sa lui – il quale, alla prima occasione, ne parla a vostra moglie, che non capisce e non gradisce (talvolta, le due cose insieme).
Come ovviare a tutto questo? Semplice: ammonite arbitro e guardalinee. Alla seconda ammonizione, cartellino rosso: fuori dai piedi. Il bello di questa partita è che si può fare. | Translation - English
George Harrison played centre-half for the Beatles. An inspired centre-half, admittedly (how else can we explain Something and Here Comes the Sun?), but a centre-half nonetheless. Inside forward was Paul McCartney, and John Lennon was on the left wing, no doubt about it. With a pair like that up front, the Fab Four could even afford to keep someone like Ringo Starr on the team, their very own Terry Butcher.
When you think about it, this way of looking at things can be extended to families, work, couples, newspaper offices, associations and social clubs.
...I almost forgot: some people are natural born referees. We all know them: whenever there’s an argument, we hear their annoying whistle in our ears. Of course, we needn’t actually hear it as such – the whistle in question might be a glance, a meaningful silence, a grimace, a particular inclination of the head. A man born to be a referee – or a woman, since this is a field in which many women excel – wants to decide, lay down the law, pacify, reconcile. Or rather, settle. The motto of the referee by vocation is: “I settle, therefore I am”.
In order to settle – an activity which brings him, or of course her, an almost physical pleasure – the referee adopts a conciliatory tone, or harsh words, depending on their personality, and on their mood that day. Then they award free kicks (either direct or indirect), give warnings, yellow cards and the occasional expulsion (later they consult their conscience and decide how many games to disqualify the players for).
Every office, company, association or family has its referee. Sometimes it’s the wisest person, often the most meddling. No one has asked them, but they run over anyway, across the pitch of our lives. I had an argument with my boyfriend-goalkeeper; so what’s it got to do with you?, the left wing-girlfriend queries. But the referee arrives with a contrite smirk and a solution at the ready. And maybe the boyfriend gets sent off, when a verbal warning would have sufficed.
And what about the linesmen, you may ask. Yes, we’ve got them, too. They help the ref take decisions about other people’s lives. The typical linesman puffs up with pride when he signals a suspected offside. For example: you are out for a business dinner with an attractive colleague, and he sees you. So he reports it to the ref in charge of the match – don’t ask what match; he knows – who, at the first opportunity, tells your wife, who is neither understanding nor appreciative (possibly both at the same time).
But what can we do about it? Simple: issue a yellow card to the ref and the linesman. On the second booking, expulsion: an early bath. The nice thing about this match is that the rules let you do it.

Le risorse umane all’interno di ogni organizzazione rivestono la massima importanza. Se è vero che esse comportano maggiori difficoltà di gestione, tuttavia al loro interno sono insite elevate potenzialità di miglioramento, e ciò richiede un’attenzione particolare.
L’istruzione degli addetti deve essere curata dal punto di vista teorico e pratico, e a essi deve essere sempre fornita una chiara e forte motivazione allo svolgimento del lavoro. Ciò comporta che si proceda alla responsabilizzazione massima nell’adempimento delle funzioni, operando sempre verso l’integrazione, nel funzionamento della struttura e nel contesto sociale. Il personale deve essere orientato a concepire il lavoro o le sue attività, in generale, in funzione collettiva o sociale, e ogni addetto deve essere spinto a sviluppare un’attività formativa verso gli altri soggetti del capitale umano dell’organizzazione.
Ci sono più fattori che concorrono al successo di un’organizzazione. Se è importante che essa conti un’autorevole figura leader, è bene ricordare sempre che un capo esercita il suo ruolo all’interno di un gruppo strutturato. Il coordinamento pertanto non basta: appare essenziale il recepimento da parte del gruppo delle indicazioni del leader e l’azione conseguente del gruppo stesso.
La funzione di un organizzatore efficace è quella di trascinare i collaboratori, affrontare e risolvere i problemi, aiutare a superare gli ostacoli e creare la motivazione per raggiungere gli obiettivi. Come è evidente, se il gruppo non partecipa attivamente a queste azioni, rispondendo adeguatamente, tutto ciò che il leader compie non otterrà i frutti sperati. È necessario quindi porsi anzitutto un quesito: come si possono “convincere” le persone che fanno parte di un’organizzazione, e, in particolare, di un gruppo di staff, a seguire il leader partecipando attivamente al conseguimento dello scopo dell’organizzazione? La risposta è semplice e complessa al contempo: è necessario che le persone condividano le finalità dell’organizzazione. Non è sufficiente che siano solo consapevoli dell’esistenza di tali finalità e che le conoscano, ma è necessario che abbiano una consapevolezza attiva nel conseguirle e si sostengano a vicenda nel raggiungerle. Human resources play a crucial role within any organisation. While they clearly bring with them greater management difficulties, they are also a source of great potential for improvement, and this is why they require special attention.
Employees must be provided with both theoretical and practical training, and always given a clear and strong motivation to carry out their work. This means instilling in them a sense of full responsibility for their duties, always working towards integration, within the functioning of the organisation and in the social context. Staff must be encouraged to consider their work, or activities in general, in collective and social terms, and each employee must be encouraged to develop training initiatives for other members of the workforce.
Various factors contribute to an organisation’s success. While it is important to have an authoritative leader, we should always remember that a leader operates within a structured group. Coordination alone, however, is not enough: the group has to take on board the leader’s instructions and act accordingly.
An effective organisation works by encouraging its staff, tackling and resolving problems, providing help in overcoming obstacles and motivating people to achieve goals. Of course, if the group fails to respond as they should, and to actively participate in these tasks, none of the leader’s efforts will obtain the desired results. The first problem that needs to be dealt with is this: how can the people within an organisation, and, in particular, within a work team, be “persuaded” to follow the leader and play an active role in achieving the organisation’s goals? The answer is both simple and complex at the same time: people need to share those goals. Merely being aware that they exist and knowing what they are is not enough; they have to consciously pursue them and help each other attain them. This is the only way to achieve the collaboration on which teamwork is based.
