Source text - English Our aim in this book has been to describe and explain the meaning-making resources of modern English, going as far in detail as is possible within one medium-sized volume. When deciding what parts of the grammar to cover, and how far to go in discussion of theory, we have had in mind those who want to use their understanding of grammar in analysing and interpreting texts. This in turn means recognizing that the contexts for analysis of discourse are numerous and varied — educational, social, literary, political, legal, clinical and so on; and in all these the text may be being analysed as specimen or as artefact, or both (specimen here might mean specimen of a particular functional variety, or register, such as 'legal English'). What is common to all these pursuits is that they should be grounded in an account of the grammar that is coherent, comprehensive and richly dimensioned. To say this is no more than to suggest that the grammatics — the model of the grammar — should be as rich as the grammar itself (Halliday, 1984b; 1996). If the account seems complex, this is because the grammar is complex — it has to be, to do all the things we make it do for us. It does not service to anyone in the long run if we pretend that semiosis — the making and understanding of meaning — is a simpler matter than it really is. Source text - English Bruce, Lenny (Oct. 13, 1925 - Aug. 3, 1966), comedian, was born Leonard Alfred Schneider in Mineola, N.Y., on Long Island, the son of Myron Schneider, a podiatrist, and Sadie Kitchenburg, a nightclub and vaudeville entertainer. He was raised in Mineola and nearby Bellmore. His parents were divorced when he was five, and he was shuttled back and forth from one parent to the other. Bruce's stormy childhood remained part of nearly everything he undertook throughout his life. He quit high school in 1942 to enlist in the navy, where he remained until after World War II, serving most of his time on the USS Brooklyn during the Italian campaign. In the late 1940's, Bruce began to frequent the lunch counter at Hanson's drugstore in New York City, famous in show-business circles as a gathering place for aspiring comedians and older, struggling ones. Here Bruce began to solidify his comedy act, learning much about delivery and timing from various people in the business. Perhaps even more important was his friendship with Joe Ancis, reputedly a richly comic talent who developed stage fright whenever he tried to perform in public. From Ancis, Bruce learned the techniques of improvisational comedy. Bruce's reputation grew to the point that he was able to win the top prize on the radio program "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" in 1948, after which he began working small nightclubs in the New York area. Realizing that he had not yet developed enough material to work consistently in major cabarets, Bruce worked what was called the "borscht circuit" of Catskill Mountains resorts. On June 15, 1951, Bruce married the striptease performer Honey Harlowe; they had one child. Ben, who lives a honourable life (his sister calls him a saint), is blinded in the end. The character of Mia Farrow wears glasses during the whole film. The only scene in which she appears without glasses is when the film suggests that she compromised for the sake of personal and professional benefit. Honourable people, thus, are not capable of seeing life and the universe as they really are. They are not capable of seeing the ugliness of this world. They maintain an inner sight, which does not let them move away from their beliefs and values.

Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, εισήγαγε το montage of attractions, το οποίο ήταν η υπογράμμιση του νοήματος μιας εικόνας, αντιπαραθέτοντάς την με μία άλλη εικόνα.
