What exactly is ‘translation’?
Translation is the interpretation of the meaning of a text in one language — the source text — and the production in another language, of a new, equivalent text — the target text.
Although attempts have been made to automate and computerize the translation process, or to use computers as an aid, translation is still a human activity.
The goal of translation is generally to establish a relation of equivalence between the source and target texts and the same message must be communicated while taking into account a number of constraints.
Contrary to common belief translation is not an exact science, no firmly defined one-to-one correlation exists between the words and phrases in different languages. While equivalence is sought by the translator, less rigid and more analytical methods are required to arrive at a true translation.
There is also a debate as to whether translation is an art or a craft. Literary translators, such as Gregory Rabassa in "If This Be Treason" argue convincingly that translation is an art, though he acknowledges that it is teachable. Other translators, mostly professionals working on technical, business, or legal documents, approach their task as a craft, one that can not only be taught but is subject to linguistic analysis and benefits from academic study.
Most translators will agree that the truth lies somewhere between and depends on the text. A simple document, for instance a product brochure, can be quickly translated in many cases using simple techniques familiar to advanced language students. By contrast, a newspaper editorial, text of a speech by a politician, or book on almost any subject will require not only the craft of good language skills and research technique but also the art of good writing, cultural sensitivity, and communication.

Was genau ist eine „Übersetzung“?
Übersetzung ist die Auslegung der Bedeutung von einem Text in einer Sprache (Quelle/Source) in einen neuen, gleichwertigen Text (Ziel/Target).
Obwohl Automations-Versuche vorgenommen wurden, ist die Übersetzung immer noch eine menschliche Aktivität.
Das Ziel einer Übersetzung ist gewöhnlich die Gleichwertigkeit zwischen Quelle und Ziel und die absolut gleiche Botschaft muss kommuniziert werden, während gewisse Beschränkungen berücksichtigt werden müssen.
Entgegen der akzeptierten Ansicht, dass Übersetzung eine genaue Wissenschaft ist, existiert keine genaue Wechselbeziehung zwischen den Wörtern und Redewendungen in verschiedenen Sprachen. Während Gleichwertigkeit durch den Übersetzer gesucht wird, werden kaum starre und analytische Methoden gebraucht, um eine „wahre“ Übersetzung zu erlangen.
Es besteht auch eine Debatte, ob Übersetzung eine Kunst oder ein Handwerk ist. Die meisten Übersetzer werden aber zugeben, dass die Wahrheit irgendwo dazwischen liegt und von dem Text abhängt. Ein sehr einfaches Dokument, zum Beispiel eine Produkt-Broschüre, kann schnell übersetzt werden und in vielen Fällen benutzt der Übersetzer einfache, vertraute Techniken wie ein fortgeschrittener Sprachstudent. Aber hier ist ein Kontrast; eine Zeitungsartikel, ein Text von einer Ansprache eines Politikers oder ein Buch, egal was für ein Fachgebiet, benötigt nicht nur gute Sprachefähigkeiten brauchen und Forschungstechniken, aber auch die Kunst von guter Schrift, kulturelle Sensibilität und ausgezeichnete Kommunikationsfähigkeiten.

I am a German native who has been living and working in the US for about 15 years. I speak both languages fluently.
I graduated from the University of Applied Science (Fachhochschule Fulda) with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing in 1993 and started working for SLMA (Student Marketing Association) after receiving my work permission. I was promoted 3 times in 4 years.
Even though I was born in Germany and received my college education in Germany, I am fluent in both languages. As a translator, I cannot and will not know everything, but I know where to find the information.
The most important merit of a professional translator in my opinion is to decline a job offer if the job does not fall within his or her expertise. I do this almost once a week. I will provide quality, attention to detail and accuracy. I have never missed a deadline. Not because I work faster than the competition, but I know what I can do, in what time frame without jeopardizing the quality that every client deserves. I will quote you a reasonable price, accept a reasonable deadline and communicate with my clients frequently to keep them up to date on the project.
When I accept a job, I will deliver – on time, accurate and without errors.
I have translated everything from technical manuals, legal correspondence, contracts, dog breeds and their history, a book translation on Kama Sutra, risk management, European history and countless tourist and economic projects, a financial web site, European Union labour issues, just to name a few.
I learn new facts every day and it is a very rewarding career choice. I am also able to read and translate the old german fonts ("Alte Deutsche Schrift","Fraktur").
Accepting challenges is the basis of my life experiences and something I do with confidence. I am a committed individual with pride in being professional, accurate and proficient. These are the qualities that make an excellent Freelance Translator.
