Source text - English I cannot support a war without international agreement or domestic support. I applaud the heroic efforts that the Prime Minister has made in trying to secure a second resolution. I do not think that anybody could have done better than the Foreign Secretary in working to get support for a second resolution within the Security Council. But the very intensity of those attempts underlines how important it was to succeed. Now that those attempts have failed, we cannot pretend that getting a second resolution was of no importance. France has been at the receiving end of bucket loads of commentary in recent days. It is not France alone that wants more time for inspections. Germany wants more time for inspections; Russia wants more time for inspections; indeed, at no time have we signed up even the minimum necessary to carry a second resolution. We delude ourselves if we think that the degree of international hostility is all the result of President Chirac. The reality is that Britain is being asked to embark on a war without agreement in any of the international bodies of which we are a leading partner — not NATO, not the European Union and, now, not the Security Council. The threshold for war should always be high. None of us can predict the death toll of civilians from the forthcoming bombardment of Iraq, but the US warning of a bombing campaign that will "shock and awe" makes it likely that casualties will be numbered at least in the thousands. Iraq's military strength is now less than half its size than at the time of the last Gulf war. Ironically, it is only because Iraq's military forces are so weak that we can even contemplate its invasion. What has come to trouble me most over past weeks is the suspicion that if the hanging chads in Florida had gone the other way and Al Gore had been elected, we would not now be about to commit British troops. The longer that I have served in this place, the greater the respect I have for the good sense and collective wisdom of the British people. On Iraq, I believe that the prevailing mood of the British people is sound. They do not doubt that Saddam is a brutal dictator, but they are not persuaded that he is a clear and present danger to Britain. They want inspections to be given a chance, and they suspect that they are being pushed too quickly into conflict by a US Administration with an agenda of its own. Above all, they are uneasy at Britain going out on a limb on a military adventure without a broader international coalition and against the hostility of many of our traditional allies. From the start of the present crisis, I have insisted, as Leader of the House, on the right of this place to vote on whether Britain should go to war. I intend to join those tomorrow night who will vote against military action now. It is for that reason, and for that reason alone, and with a heavy heart, that I resign from the government. Source text - English On my sixteenth day in Hammerfest, it happened. I was returning from the headland after my morning walk and in an empty piece of sky above the town there appeared a translucent cloud of many colours – pinks and greens and blues and pale purples. It glimmered and seemed to swirl. Slowly it stretched across the sky. It had an oddly oily quality about it, like the rainbows you sometimes see in a pool of petrol. I stood transfixed. I knew from my reading that the Northern Lights are immensely high up in the atmosphere, something like 200 miles up, but this show seemed to be suspended just above the town. There are two kinds of Northern Light – the curtains of shimmering gossamer that everyone has seen in pictures, and the rather rarer gas clouds that I was gazing at now. They are never the same twice. Sometimes they shoot wraith-like across the sky, like smoke in a wind tunnel, moving at enormous speed, and sometimes they hang like luminous drapes or glittering spears of light, and very occasionally –perhaps once or twice in a lifetime– they creep out from every point on the horizon and flow together overhead in a spectacular, silent explosion of light and colour. In the depthless blackness of the countryside, where you may be a hundred miles from the nearest artificial light, they are capable of the most weird and unsettling optical illusions. They can seem to come out of the sky and fly at you at enormous speeds, as if trying to kill you. Apparently, it's terrifying. To this day, many Lapps earnestly believe that if you show the Lights a white handkerchief or a sheet of white paper they will come and take you away. This display was relatively small stuff, and it lasted for only a few minutes, but it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and it would do me until something better came along. In the evening, something did – a display of Lights that went on for hours. Their colour was the eerie luminous green you see on radar screens, but the activity was frantic. Narrow swirls of light would sweep across the great dome of sky, then hang there like vapour trails. Sometimes they flashed across the sky like falling stars and sometimes they spun languorously, reminding me of the lazy way smoke used to rise up from my father's pipe when he was reading. Source text - English Feeling breathless is probably one of the most frightening experiences anyone can have, and it is also very scary for those witnessing it. It is a symptom which can quite often experienced by people with late stage cancer (especially lung) or with late stage heart failure. The most important thing of all if you experience shortness of breath is to let your health care providers know immediately. Your health care team will want first of all to give you a thorough check over to see if there is something specific causing the breathlessness, and if so, they will be able to use the appropriate medicine or intervention to help you. There are some underlying causes which may be imminently treatable or manageable, for example, a collection of fluid in the lungs, or a respiratory tract infection. If you have late stage heart failure, the medications you are on may need to be increased or altered. Breathlessness may be a result of hypoxia-ie low oxygen levels in the blood. If this is the case, your doctor may decide to treat you with oxygen therapy, or if the hypoxia is a result of anaemia, then you may be offered a blood transfusion. For patients with lung cancer, palliative chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be offered to reduce a tumour in the lungs if this is the cause of the breathlessness. Coping with breathlessness In conjunction with the plan for addressing and managing your breathlessness that your healthcare team will devise for you, there are also some practical and simple ways in which you can reduce feelings of breathlessness whenever they occur:- • It often helps to open a window, or to use a small fan, to increase the airflow in the room. It is also often a good idea to keep the room cooler rather than being too warm as this can make people feel more ‘tight-chested’ • Adjust your position. Upright positions are generally the best, rather than lying flat as it helps your lungs to expand more fully. Your head, neck and shoulders need to be supported so that you can get them more relaxed. Find the best position for yourself. Some prefer to be sitting upright, others to stand with upper body leaning against a support (eg sofa back) or standing with back supported by a wall. A good position if you are lying down, is on one side but a little bit rolled towards your front, with two or three pillows under your head and shoulders, and another one under your chest. • You can get more control over your breathing by learning some simple breathing exercises, see the two exercises below. Try to learn them and practise them when feeling well, so that you can carry them out automatically whenever you get breathless. • Pace yourself and your activities if necessary, so that you do not have to exert yourself so much. For example if you find you are getting breathless walking from the bedroom to the bathroom, place a chair at a halfway point so you can sit down and catch your breath. Sit down when washing, or dressing and when you are performing other tasks such as preparing food. Balance periods of activity with rest. • When climbing up stairs or a slope breathe in on one step, on the next step breathe out and then wait a moment. Then repeat. • Keep items that you use regularly within easy reach. • It is really important to try to relax, so you might like to use a visualization or a progressive muscle relaxation technique to assist you with this. • A massage of the head and neck with lavender oil can really help people to relax and to loosen up when they feel breathless. • Some people find complementary therapies such as acupuncture or reflexology very helpful for their anxiety, and breathlessness • Distraction-listening to music or watching television can help take your mind off your breathlessness, and so help calm your breathing down. Feeling breathless can make you feel very anxious and induce feelings of panic. This in turn can actually make your breathlessness more pronounced. It is vital to manage and reduce anxiety/panic. If using breathing exercises, or other techniques like distraction or relaxation techniques do not help, your doctor may want to prescribe you medicine to help you feel less anxious. Another medicine proven to be very helpful for continued breathlessness is a small regular dose of morphine. Taking control of a episode of severe dyspnoea. Learning how to gain control of your breathing can be invaluable in making you feel more secure and less scared. When you feel breathless, you may find that you become extremely tense, raise your shoulders and start using your upper chest to breathe rapidly. This makes it even more difficult and tiring for your lungs to work efficiently, and to get the right amount of air into your body. It is a good idea to learn this exercise when you are feeling well, so that you can put it into practice whenever you have an episode of severe dyspnoea. (1) Stop and rest in a comfortable position. (see below for suggested positions) (2) Get your head down (ie relax your neck) (3) Drop your shoulders down-let them sink right down and feel heavy. (4) Breathe in through your mouth (5) Blow out through your mouth (6) Breathe in and blow out as fast as possible (7) Begin to blow out longer but not forcibly. You can purse your lips if you find this helpful (8) Begin to slow your breathing (9) If you can nose-breathe, take your inward breath in through your nose. (10) Start diaphragmatic breathing exercise* (see below for more information) (11) Stay in your comfortable position for 5 minutes longer. Comfortable positions for breathing exercises are those where your back and shoulders are well supported, example by a chair/pillows, so that it is easy for you to relax your shoulders and neck. You might want to rest your hands on your thighs, so that you can further relax your shoulders. *Diaphramatic breathing, (ie breathing using the strong muscles of the diaphragm) is the most efficient way of breathing. The first thing to do is to identify your diaphragm: Place your hand flat on your abdomen and give a little cough: the muscle you feel move when you cough is your diaphragm. Now take a breath in and you will feel your abdomen move outwards, as your lower lungs fill up with air. As you breathe out, your abdomen goes in. Now try breathing in through your nose, and gently out through your mouth. Try to breathe in for a count of 3 and out for a count of 6. Try repeating this 5-10 times, several times a day. Αντιμετώπιση της δύσπνοιας Σε συνδυασμό με το πρόγραμμα αντιμετώπισης και διαχείρισης της δύσπνοιας, το οποίο θα σας συστήσει ο θεράπων γιατρός σας, υπάρχουν και κάποιοι απλοί και πρακτικοί τρόποι για να μειώσετε το αίσθημα της δύσπνοιας, όποτε αυτό προκύψει: • Πολλές φορές βοηθάει το να ανοίξετε ένα παράθυρο ή να χρησιμοποιήσετε έναν μικρό ανεμιστήρα, έτσι ώστε να αυξήσετε τη ροή του αέρα στο δωμάτιο. Είναι καλύτερα να διατηρείτε το χώρο σας ψυχρότερο αντί θερμότερο γιατί η θερμότητα είναι πιθανό να σας προκαλέσει ένα αίσθημα πίεσης στο στήθος. • Ρυθμίστε τη στάση του σώματός σας. Οι ευθυτενείς θέσεις είναι γενικότερα καλύτερες απ' ότι οι οριζόντιες, εφόσον ευνοούν περισσότερο τη διαστολή των πνευμόνων σας. Για να ξεκουράσετε καλύτερα το κεφάλι, τον αυχένα και τους ώμους σας, είναι καλό να τα υποστηρίξετε. Επιλέξτε μια στάση, στην οποία θα νιώθετε άνετα. Άλλοι προτιμούν να κάθονται ευθυτενώς, άλλοι με την πλάτη να ακουμπάει σε κάποιο στήριγμα (πχ. πλάτη καναπέ), ενώ άλλοι να στέκονται όρθιοι με την πλάτη στον τοίχο. Μια καλή θέση όταν ξαπλώνετε, είναι στα πλάγια με μικρή κλίση προς τα εμπρός, με δύο ή τρία μαξιλάρια κάτω από το κεφάλι και τους ώμους σας και άλλο ένα κάτω από το θώρακα. • Μπορείτε να αποκτήσετε μεγαλύτερο έλεγχο της αναπνοής σας με την εκμάθηση μερικών απλών ασκήσεων αναπνοής, όπως τις δύο που αναφέρονται παρακάτω. Προσπαθήστε να τις μάθετε και να τις εξασκήσετε όταν αισθάνεστε καλά, έτσι ώστε να μπορέσετε να τις εφαρμόσετε αυτόματα σε περίπτωση που αισθανθείτε δύσπνοια. • Μειώστε το ρυθμό σας και αυτόν των δραστηριοτήτων σας, ώστε να μη χρειάζεται να πιέζετε πολύ τον εαυτό σας. Αν για παράδειγμα νιώθετε δύσπνοια περπατώντας από το υπνοδωμάτιο στο μπάνιο, τοποθετήστε μια καρέκλα στα μισά της διαδρομής, έτσι ώστε να μπορείτε να κάθεστε και να αναπνέετε. Καθίστε όταν πλένεστε, ντύνεστε ή κάνετε άλλες δουλειές, όπως το μαγείρεμα. Ισορροπήστε τις περιόδους δράσης με περιόδους ξεκούρασης. • Όταν ανεβαίνετε σκάλες ή ανηφόρες, εισπνεύστε στο ένα βήμα, εκπνεύστε στο επόμενο και μετά περιμένετε λίγο. Στη συνέχεια επαναλάβετε το ίδιο. • Φυλάξτε τα πράγματα, τα οποία χρησιμοποιείτε συχνά, σε μικρή απόσταση. • Είναι πραγματικά σημαντικό να ξεκουράζεστε, οπότε ίσως θελήσετε να χρησιμοποιήσετε μια τεχνική θεραπευτικού οραματισμού ή προοδευτικής χαλάρωσης (PMR) για να σας βοηθήσει σε αυτό. • Το μασάζ στο κεφάλι και τον αυχένα με λάδι λεβάντας, μπορεί πραγματικά να βοηθήσει τους ανθρώπους να ξεκουραστούν και να χαλαρώσουν, σε περίπτωση που νιώσουν δύσπνοια. • Μερικοί άνθρωποι βρίσκουν τις εναλλακτικές θεραπείες, όπως το βελονισμό και τη ρεφλεξολογία, πολύ χρήσιμες στην αντιμετώπιση του άγχους και της δύσπνοιας. • Το άκουσμα μουσικής ή η τηλεθέαση μπορούν να σας βοηθήσουν, αποσπώντας την προσοχή σας από τη δύσπνοια, με αποτέλεσμα τη βελτίωση του ρυθμού της αναπνοής σας. Το αίσθημα της δύσπνοιας μπορεί να σας δημιουργήσει έντονο άγχος, περιλαμβάνοντας και αισθήματα πανικού. Αυτό με τη σειρά του μπορεί να κάνει τη δύσπνοιά σας εντονότερη. Η διαχείριση και η μείωση του άγχους/πανικού είναι ζωτικής σημασίας. Εφόσον οι ασκήσεις αναπνοής ή οι άλλες μέθοδοι, όπως η απόσπαση της προσοχής ή οι τεχνικές χαλάρωσης δε σας βοηθήσουν, ίσως ο γιατρός σας να σας συστήσει κάποια φάρμακα για τη μείωση του άγχους. Ένα άλλο φάρμακο, το οποίο έχει αποδειχθεί πολύ αποτελεσματικό στην παρατεταμένη δύσπνοια, είναι η μορφίνη, σε μικρές αλλά τακτικές δόσεις. Ανάκτηση ελέγχου κατά τη διάρκεια σοβαρής κρίσης δύσπνοιας. Αν μάθετε να ελέγχετε την αναπνοή σας, αυτό μπορεί να αποδειχθεί πολύτιμο, κάνοντάς σας να νιώσετε πιο ασφαλείς και λιγότερο φοβισμένοι. Όταν νιώθετε δύσπνοια ίσως νιώσετε εξαιρετικά σφιγμένοι, με τάση να ανασηκώσετε τους ώμους σας και να αρχίσετε να αναπνέετε γρήγορα, χρησιμοποιώντας τον άνω θώρακα. Αυτό δυσκολεύει τους πνεύμονες σας ακόμη περισσότερο στο να δουλέψουν αποτελεσματικά και να πάρουν την αναγκαία ποσότητα αέρα που χρειάζεται το σώμα σας. Θα ήταν καλή ιδέα να μάθετε την ακόλουθη άσκηση όταν αισθάνεστε καλά, έτσι ώστε να την εφαρμόσετε μόλις αντιμετωπίσετε κάποιο επεισόδιο σοβαρής δύσπνοιας. (1) Σταματήστε και ξεκουραστείτε σε μια αναπαυτική στάση. (δέστε πιο κάτω τις προτεινόμενες θέσεις) (2) Κατεβάστε το κεφάλι σας (πχ. για να ξεκουράσετε τον αυχένα) (3) Κατεβάστε τους ώμους σας - αφήστε τους να βυθιστούν και να νιώσετε το βάρος τους. (4) Εισπνεύστε από το στόμα (5) Εκπνεύστε από το στόμα (6) Εισπνεύστε και εκπνεύστε όσο πιο γρήγορα μπορείτε (7) Αρχίστε να εκπνέετε για περισσότερη ώρα αλλά όχι βίαια. Μπορείτε να σουφρώσετε τα χείλη σας αν πιστεύετε ότι αυτό σας βοηθάει (8) Αρχίστε να επιβραδύνετε την αναπνοή σας (9) Αν μπορείτε να αναπνεύσετε από τη μύτη, εισπνεύστε από τη μύτη σας. (10) Αρχίστε την άσκηση διαφραγματικής ή αλλιώς κοιλιακής αναπνοής* (δέστε παρακάτω για περισσότερες πληροφορίες) (11) Παραμείνετε για 5 λεπτά ακόμη στην αναπαυτική σας στάση. Αναπαυτικές στάσεις κατά τη διάρκεια αναπνευστικών ασκήσεων είναι οι στάσεις του σώματος, στις οποίες η πλάτη και οι ώμοι σας υποστηρίζονται επαρκώς, για παράδειγμα με μια καρέκλα ή μαξιλάρια, έτσι ώστε να είναι εύκολη η ξεκούραση των ώμων και του αυχένα σας. Ίσως θελήσετε να ακουμπήσετε τα χέρια σας στους μηρούς, για να ξεκουράσετε ακόμη περισσότερο τους ώμους σας. *Η διαφραγματική ή κοιλιακή αναπνοή (= αναπνοή χρησιμοποιώντας τους ισχυρούς μύες του διαφράγματος) είναι ο αποτελεσματικότερος τρόπος αναπνοής. Το πρώτο που έχετε να κάνετε είναι να εντοπίσετε το διάφραγμα σας: Ακουμπήστε το χέρι σας επίπεδα στην κοιλιά σας και βήξτε ελαφρά: ο μυς τον οποίο νιώθετε να κινείται όταν βήχετε είναι το διάφραγμα σας. Τώρα εισπνεύστε και θα νιώσετε την κοιλιά σας να διαστέλλεται ενώ οι πνεύμονές σας γεμίζουν με αέρα. Ενώ εκπνέετε η κοιλιά σας επανέρχεται στην αρχική της θέση. Τώρα δοκιμάστε να εισπνεύσετε από τη μύτη και να εκπνεύσετε αργά από το στόμα. Δοκιμάστε να εισπνεύσετε μετρώντας ως το 3 και να εκπνεύσετε μετρώντας ως το 6. Επαναλάβετε αυτή τη διαδικασία 5-10 φορές, αρκετές φορές κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας.

Source text - German Im Grenzland des Terrors Die Nachrichten aus Pakistan sind immer wieder verwirrend. Ist das nun ein Verbündeter der USA? Und wenn ja: Wieso kann von seinem Boden der Krieg in Afghanistan genährt werden? Warum gelingt es der pakistanischen Armee seit Jahren nicht, die Taliban und andere Fanatiker in ihrem Land zu besiegen? Ein Reporterteam hat sich in den Khyber-Distrikt durchgeschlagen, um das herauszufinden EIN ZWISCHEN-FALL AN DER GRENZE Am Nachmittag des 10. Juni 2008 gerät eine Gruppe US-Soldaten an der afghanisch-pakistanischen Grenze in einen Hinterhalt der Taliban. Das Feuergefecht ereignet sich direkt auf der sogenannten Zero-Line, die Afghanistan von jenen abgelegenen Regionen Pakistans trennt, die als „Staatlich verwaltete Stammesgebiete“, kurz FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) bezeichnet werden. Der Grenzabschnitt wird zu dieser Zeit von drei Truppenposten der pakistanischen Armee kontrolliert. Die Amerikaner fordern Unterstützung durch US-Kampfjets von afghanischen Stützpunkten an. Die Flugzeuge kommen. Am Ende sind die Taliban geflüchtet, die Amerikaner in Sicherheit - und die Leichen von elf pakistanischen Grenzsoldaten liegen auf dem Boden. Getötet von den Kampfpiloten ihrer amerikanischen Verbündeten. „Grundlos und feige“ sei der Luftangriff gewesen, schimpfen pakistanische Diplomaten. Die US-Regierung bedauert den „tragischen Fehler“. Doch wie es zu dem Vorfall gekommen ist, bleibt ungewiss. Bis Wochen später vier Bewohner des nahen Dorfes Suran Dara die Wahrheit preisgeben: Die pakistanischen Soldaten haben als Erste das Feuer auf die Amerikaner eröffnet - weil sie die angreifenden Taliban unterstützen wollten. „Warum auch nicht?“, fragen die Dorfbewohner. „In dieser Gegend hier halten wir alle zu den Taliban.“ Experten versichern, dass der Vorfall nur einer von vielen vergleichbaren war. Schon oft haben sich die Soldaten der im Kampf gegen den Terror verbündeten Staaten Pakistan und USA im Grenzgebiet blutige Gefechte miteinander geliefert. Immer drängender stellt sich für die Amerikaner die Frage: Auf welcher Seite steht Pakistan in diesem Krieg wirklich? Είναι τελικά σύμμαχος των ΗΠΑ; Εάν είναι, τότε γιατί υποθάλπει στο έδαφός του τον πόλεμο στο Αφγανιστάν; Γιατί δεν έχει κερδίσει ο πακιστανικός στρατός, εδώ και χρόνια, τη μάχη κατά των Ταλιμπάν και των άλλων φανατικών που βρίσκονται στη χώρα του; Μια ομάδα δημοσιογράφων περιπλανήθηκε στην περιφέρεια του συνοριακού περάσματος Χαϊμπέρ, αναζητώντας την απάντηση σε αυτό το ερώτημα. ΕΝΑ ΕΠΕΙΣΟΔΙΟ ΣΤΑ ΣΥΝΟΡΑ Το απόγευμα της 10ης Ιουνίου 2008, μια ομάδα στρατιωτών των ΗΠΑ στα αφγανοπακιστανικά σύνορα πέφτει σε ενέδρα των Ταλιμπάν. Εμπειρογνώμονες διαβεβαιώνουν πως αυτό ήταν μόνο ένα από τα πολλά παρόμοια περιστατικά. Οι στρατιώτες των συμμαχικών χωρών που έχουν ταχθεί κατά της τρομοκρατίας ―του Πακιστάν και των ΗΠΑ― έχουν εμπλακεί αρκετές φορές σε αιματηρές μεταξύ τους συγκρούσεις.
