O desenvolvimento do espírito crítico do estudante deverá constituir um dos principais objectivos de qualquer escola. Numa escola de arquitectura, esse objectivo atingir-se-á através do contacto, interpretação e questionamento dos acontecimentos mais marcantes da arquitectura contemporânea. Essa relação crítica com a arquitectura contemporânea potenciará a compreensão da intensa dialéctica existente entre teoria e projecto, levando à compreensão da impossibilidade de compartimentação de uma destas vertentes. O abandono da ideia de que a teoria é uma actividade alternativa à prática de projecto será um instrumento capaz de contrariar a repetição mecânica de fórmulas.
Teoria da Arquitectura III pretende ser um espaço de reflexão autónomo cujo programa se funda nos estudos desenvolvidos no Laboratório de Arquitectura da Universidade Politécnica da Catalunha por Hélio Piñon. A manipulação e apropriação crítica desses estudos possibilitará uma aproximação interpretativa e crítica aos temas e momentos das disciplinas de projecto do 3º ano.
Os quatro grandes temas em que se organiza a unidade curricular assumem-se como plataformas permitirão a descoberta da diversidade metodológica da produção arquitectónica. A interpretação de textos e obras do século XX constituirá a principal estratégia da unidade curricular.

The development of the student’s critical mind must be any school’s main goal. In a school of architecture, that objective is attained through the interpretation and questioning of contemporary architecture’s most remarkable events. That critical relationship with contemporary architecture will enhance the understanding of the strong dialectic between theory and project, thus leading to the clear notion of their indivisibility. The idea that theory is an alternative activity to the execution of a project is put aside in order to avoid the mechanical repetition of formulae.
Theory of Architecture III intends to provide an autonomous ground for reflection. Its programme is based on the studies developed by Hélio Piñon at the Laboratory of Architecture of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The critical manipulation and adaptation of those studies will allow an interpretative and critical approach to the 3rd year project subjects.
The course unit is organized into four main themes that will function as platforms for the discovery of methodological diversity in architectonical productions. The interpretation of texts from the 20th century will be the main strategy used.
