About me

Native French-speaker, born in Brussels in 1948.

1971 : Docteur en Droit — Université Libre de Bruxelles (U.L.B.).
1971 - 1972 : Probationary Lawyer, member of the Bar of Brussels.

N.B. : in Belgium, as in France or in Switzerland, to be a lawyer (or attorney) involves being a Member of the Bar.
No distinction is made between lawyers, attorneys, solicitors or barristers. But the word "lawyer" might be translated in French as "avocat", "juriste" or " homme de loi".

I soon realized that visiting prisons, handling divorces or joining a company's legal department was not what I really wanted to do.
Nevertheless, my legal knowledge and understanding of "legal language" has been of great use to me and proved most helpful in my business activities (interior decoration and fashion).

At high school, besides Dutch, English and German, I also studied Latin (6 years) and Ancient Greek (4 years).
So quite early on in my life, I became very aware of translation, etymology, and all the richness and the subtlety of languages.
Both for professional reasons and out of personal interest, I have also studied Italian.

Having trained in law and also being a golf player, I took a great interest in the Rules of Golf.
I regarded them like a Code and The Decisions as jurisprudence.
Most golf players find the rules difficult to understand and encounter problems applying them correctly.
In 1998, I attended The Royal and Ancient Golf School at St Andrews, passed my examination and became a certified Referee.

You may wonder what the conection is with translating.
To be in charge of ruling represents a great responsibility — just like translating.
Both demand judgment and a proper understanding of the context.
Both need to be well-founded and justified.
And both require time to do well — being aware that a bad ruling or a bad translation could have very damaging consequences.

When you entrust your translation to me, for greatest accuracy, I will ask you to give me as much information as possible about the text, its origin or source, and its context.
