Report from  Marijke Mayer
First of all, I would like to thank all of you for attending and for sending me all those kind thank-you notes that I cannot acknowledge on an individual basis at the moment. It was great to be able to meet each and everyone in person.

Second of all, I would like to thank Henk Peelen for 'immortalizing' this afternoon by putting these great movies on YouTube. In hindsight, it was 'worth' it to lose you, Henk, for a while as you captured the wonderful music of those violists in the Passage! The sound and quality is excellent! Thank goodness for mobile phones so we were able to join up again.

I am really impressed with the way Henk filmed that demonstration coming around the corner, with the Garuda building in the background . . . the stark blue sky . . . the atmosphere laden with tension . . . augmented by the presence of the police . . . accompanied by dramatic shouting . . . it really could have been a part of a movie! KudoZ! I will cherish it forever!

To go back to our powwow, we started the meeting with a walk at 14:00 hours at the Lange Voorhout, where even the VVV (local tourist office) tried to 'barge in'. I told these 'lost souls' that they were welcome to come along, but they felt 4 hours was a bit too long . . . We obviously did not think so: After making our way through the art exhibition at the Lange Voorhout, Ben showed us the smallest house in the world there and told us we positively needed to see the the Bijenkorf, a prime example of the 'Amsterdam School' of architecture, which, after seeing the castle in the 'Binnenhof' , prompted a detour through at the ' Buitenhof' through the famous Passage (see Henk's movie) in favor of a tour of the Houses of Parliament. After admiring the famous stained glass windows of the Bijenkorf, a quick break at the "Gouden Hoofd" for refreshments enabled us to catch up with Henk again. Some of us went to see the Panorama Mesdag just before it closed. We via a detour at the Smidswater for some more refreshments, we then all met up at the Garuda and had a wonderful dinner!

Thanks to Ben for acting as our accountant in paying the bill and making a downloadable copy of the bill for tax purposes (and thanks to Henk for uploading it).

To sum it all up: The company was good, the ambiance was great, the weather was very co-operative and we even got some action in the form of a demonstration (see above), and to boot the Indonesian 'rijsttafel' was excellent!

I think it is a good thing to take time out of our busy schedules to meet up like this. I was invited to organize another powwow on "Translator's Day-- weekend of September 28, 29 and 30, but will leave it up to one of you to take the initiative (and earn the BrowniZ that go along with it). We could even be"Stammtishing it', having regular meetings in The Hague.

Thanks again to you all,
Marijke

Marijke, thank you very much for this great powwow. Kaliamma, don\'t worry, I did enjoy the fiddlers and, even more, the \"IJssalon\" at the Spuistraat. André, thanks for feeding good shots. Terrible you tell us we have to do without them next powwow. Ben thanks for sending a digital version of the Garuda invoice.

Den Haag kraakt in zijn voegen. Anti-fascism demonstration. Good start against desparate franco- & germanophil Gaius Tacitus / Jozef Ratzinger limpeza-de-sangre-Übermensch-versus-Untermensch talk like \"Dutch is a German dialect\" or about Vietnam or Iraq. No doubt about it! Dutch is a Germanic language, and we’ll promote democracy.

Aug 7 '07  Albert Stufkens: In defence of Den Haag
Ah, my friends,
On this day we hardly scratched the surface of The Hague's offerings. The 'dreary' railway station is in the process of being transformed into an ultramodern TGV station. There is the spectacular Town Hall, Peace Palace, grand architecture of the Ministries, dazzling Scheveningen, Plein 1830 with its lively cafés, mueums, Omniversum, etc. etc.
By the way, I am a Rotterdammer.
Aug 7 '07  André Dryansky: Thanks, merci, bedankt, köszönöm. etc...
Thanks for the great day and for revealing to me that The Hague is more than just a dreary railroad station - with a certain retro charm nonetheless - and a few silly-looking trams. I really enjoyed it and I will try to talk less next time. Tot zo, André
Aug 6 '07  Kaliamma Ponnan: My first unforgettable Powwow
I am glad I attended this event. It was great getting to know all of you. All new faces but I never doubted the fact that friends can be acquired anywhere. I still couldn't believe we thought we had "lost" Henk in the shopping complex when we had actually left him behind long before that! It was great getting to know you and your husband, Marijke. Dank u for the memorable historical walk.
Aug 6 '07  Elena Carbonell: I am wiser!
Yes, I have learned a lot, thanks to you. And most of all I learned how much I still have to learn. I should know more about Dutch literature, maybe learn swahili and try to distinguish more accurately between Art Noveau and Art Deco.
The food was yummy yummy.
Thank you Marijke and all of you!
Aug 6 '07  Nigel Saych: Thanks Marijke
A great day out (actually a weekend away for me!) and the first time I have actually enjoyed going to de Bijenkorf....
As I was first to leave the Eindhoven event in June, I was determined to be amongst the hard drinkers this time and sit it out to the end, putting the world to rights opposite the Hofvijfer.
Actually I was in bed before midnight, but it seemed very late!
Looking forward to the next meeting, whoever plans it will have a hard time beating the weather we had on Saturday!

Aug 6 '07  Albert Stufkens: Thank you
The weather gods favoured this day with the best weather possible; the tour took place in an environment steeped in history, and ended in a bountiful, exotic culinary happening that was also reminiscent of a glorious past. After this there followed an interesting chat over some drinks in a nearby square.
Aug 6 '07  Marion Lurf: Thank you, Marijke!
Thanks for organising this entertaining and informative powwow, Marijke! It was nice to see some old faces again and to get to know a few new ones. Can't wait for everyone's pictures!
