Report from  Sam Berner
On the evening of 16th April, a group of 28 translators and interpreters met under the auspices of Proz.com and the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) for a two-hour discussion about lifelong learning. The group included two colleagues from the Australian Sign Language Institute.

In the first hour everyone introduced themselves and it soon became clear that the POWWOW has attracted both seasoned practitioners "with undisclosable double-digit years of experience" to rookies, and from full-time freelancers to full-time in-house practitioners. Every one spoke for about 3 minutes about why continuing professional development was important to them personally, and then how they learned. By the end of the first hour, the whiteboard was full of ideas, and smart phones were flashing.

Coffee and light refreshments followed, and everyone mingled and talked.

We went back to the lecture room and sat in a circle, and formed pairs. Each partner in a pair then told their colleague about a specific incident/tool that they learned during the last two weeks that significantly changed their perception of how they worked, or changed the way in which they performed certain tasks. These were then shared around the room, some to the great hilarity of the attendees, some causing comments and further investigations.

All in all, it was a great evening, and we all look forward to the next one later in the year.
