Report: 

Various topics were discussed including:
<li>1. Price Issues: The need to fix a minimum rate for translation so that all of us are aware of it as that would benefit not only Indian Translators but the translators’ community as a whole.</li>

<li>2. Need for a body that represents Translator community in India: It’s not an easy task as translators are not so well paid and need the support of some organizations (may be government) to set up a translators’ body in India… at the same time if we seek to involve Translator’s bureaux in these efforts it might have some negative effect… seems like a chicken and egg situation.</li>

<li>3. Quality: Low prices actually mean that there is less motivation to work hard on something and quality suffers. Need for bodies (in India), recognized by proz and other such communities, which will accredit translators in India.</li>

<li>4. Proz.com Membership: High cost as compared to some other sites (go translators for 30 Euros)… there are interesting offers with group-buy schemes but then it’s not of much use for Indians… Trados is too expensive for a freelancer in India… and wordfast is free of cost (and licensed version is cheaper, for India, than what was offered in the group buy)… so these schemes might be interesting but it’s difficult for a freelance translator from India to enter.</li>

<li>5. Ethics: Some people are offering work on the condition that one reveals a client’s direct client… all of us agreed that this is not ethical… and can be quite harmful.</li>

<li>6. Difficulty to become a full-time freelancer: Only two participants are actually freelancers… and there is always more and more competition and debate about competition from students…</li>
