My first experience with interpretation was as a corporate liaison. I assisted in the training of a new accounting system which took a whole week. I immediately fell in love with talking to real people in real-time and creating this communication bridge that makes the magical part of the job more tangible. I ended up working for them again later and even providing them translation services as well.

Then, there was consecutive interpreting in a courtroom. It was family law and it was hard for me to learn how to deal with the human factors involved. However, that's when you really test yourself for professional conduct and impartiality. That took me back to court a few times and I started to feel it was time for an even greater challenge. These were not depositions, I was assisting a party. So it also involved whispered interpretation, so it involved a bit of simultaneous interpretation.

However, this time I considered joining a proper interpreter's course and learn the ropes. I still remember my first time in a booth, looking at the back of the audience's heads, extremely aware they relied on me to understand a medical conference and how thankful I was of being prepared.

Interpretation is fascinating and requires that you think you your feet. It took me a while, more than ten years in translation, to have the courage to finally do it. I knew it would be hard, I knew I would have to be prepared. But one thing I can tell you, It was worth the wait.

Now, I'm also certified for HIPAA compliance in interpretation by Remote interpretation seems to be the title os a new chapter in my ever-evolving career.
