It was a turbulent year for risk assets with a large number of the major equity indices finishing in negative territory. The year began on a positive note with global equities climbing higher, boosted by US tax reforms, strong economic data and encouraging corporate earnings reports. However, global equities tumbled to finish the first quarter lower, while a spike in volatility saw the VIX index jump to levels not seen for a number of years. Investors became increasingly concerned about US rate hikes and the prospect of a trade war between the US and China, as both sides imposed tariffs on imports. In credit, government bonds sold off before stabilising with market commentators speculating on the start of meaningful policy normalisation. Corporate debt struggled while convertibles held up relatively well amid the sell-off in equity markets.

Il 2018 si è rivelato piuttosto movimentato per le attività rischiose con gran parte dei principali indici azionari in territorio negativo a fine anno. L’avvio di segno favorevole è stato caratterizzato da una crescita del mercato azionario globale, sostenuto dalla riforma fiscale negli Stati Uniti, da solidi dati economici e da relazioni positive sugli utili societari. Ciò nonostante, lo stesso azionario globale ha subito un crollo chiudendo così il primo trimestre in ribasso; contemporaneamente, un picco di volatilità ha innescato un repentino incremento dell’indice VIX tale da raggiungere livelli che non si vedevano da anni. I motivi di crescente preoccupazione per gli investitori hanno riguardato i rialzi dei tassi d'interesse negli Stati Uniti e la possibilità di una guerra commerciale tra questi ultimi e la Cina, in quanto entrambi hanno istituito dei dazi doganali sulle importazioni provenienti dalla controparte. Source text - French Au sujet de la performance de décembre, parmi les principales composantes du fonds, l’allocation sur la Turquie, la Russie et le Brésil a influencé positivement la performance du fonds. A l’inverse, l’allocation sur l’Argentine, et dans une moindre mesure sur l’Ukraine, a pesé négativement sur la performance du fonds. Au cours de l’année 2018, le fonds a été exposé à des marchés qui ont connu des difficultés comme l’Argentine et la Turquie. Des mesures domestiques ont été prises pour ces deux pays contribuant à la diminution des tensions. Les actifs turcs ont déjà initié une reprise de leurs valorisations depuis le début du troisième trimestre, cette tendance devrait se poursuivre au cours de 2019. Pour leur part, les crédits argentins sont restés en retrait et cette année devrait marquer le retour à une valorisation plus conforme aux fondamentaux. Les risques d’une nouvelle dégradation nous semblent limités.
Translation - Italian In merito al mese di dicembre, tra le principali componenti del fondo gli apporti positivi alla performance sono giunti dalle posizioni relative ai titoli del mercato turco, russo e brasiliano. Al contrario, il rendimento del fondo è stato penalizzato dall’allocazione sul mercato argentino e, in misura minore, su quello ucraino. Nel 2018, il fondo ha dovuto fronteggiare condizioni di mercato turbolente in relazione ad alcuni paesi, quali l’Argentina e la Turchia. Questi ultimi hanno adottato delle misure interne le quali hanno agevolato una riduzione delle criticità presenti. Sin dall'inizio del terzo trimestre, la componente del portafoglio relativa alla Turchia ha intrapreso un recupero della propria valorizzazione; questo trend dovrebbe proseguire nel 2019. I titoli di debito argentini, per parte loro, hanno prodotto risultati poco soddisfacenti; quest'anno dovrebbero recuperare una valorizzazione più in linea con i fondamentali. I rischi di un ulteriore declassamento appaiono limitati.

Source text - English September is statistically the weakest month of the year for stocks and although historical statistics are not always a good guide to predict future returns, it was the case this year with a 3% equity market correction. History also tells us to look at the September equity performance in the context of the past quarter as July and August tend to be excellent months* and this was also confirmed in 2020: world equity was up 7% over the quarter.
Investors’ appetite for risk increased in the third quarter which resulted in lower credit spreads while risk-free rates remained relatively flat. In this context, bonds delivered a strong performance over the quarter, mainly as a result of lower spreads. The trend was muted in September, as spreads widened (negative) while risk-free rates decreased (positive).
Translation - Italian Statisticamente, settembre è il mese più debole dell'anno sul versante azionario e benché le statistiche “storiche” non rappresentino sempre un buon indicatore in base al quale prevedere i rendimenti futuri, quest’anno ne abbiamo avuto conferma con una correzione del mercato azionario pari al 3%. Il passato ci dice anche di osservare la performance dell’azionario a settembre nel quadro dell'ultimo trimestre, in quanto i mesi di luglio e agosto tendono a registrare risultati eccellenti, un trend che si è ripetuto anche nel 2020: l’azionario mondiale ha infatti guadagnato il 7% nel trimestre in oggetto.
La propensione al rischio degli investitori è aumentata nel terzo trimestre, con conseguente abbassamento degli spread di credito, mentre i tassi risk-free sono rimasti relativamente stabili. In tale contesto, le obbligazioni hanno messo a segno una performance notevole nel corso del trimestre, principalmente per effetto dell’abbassamento degli spread.
