Paradoxes of freelancing: maintaining individualism when belonging to a community

Date and time: 13:30-14:30, Saturday, 13 June, 2015
NOTE: This session has already been held

Room: Panorama East

Description:
This presentation will cover a range of paradoxes that freelance translators and interpreters face in their work, building upon the biggest paradox: maintaining individualism when belonging to a community at the same time.

By their very nature, paradoxes give rise to tensions, hesitation and challenges. It is important to recognise the underlying principles of these paradoxes, identify their nature and learn how to cope in this conflicted environment. After an introductory overview of the paradoxical nature of a translator’s work setting, we will move on to discuss how to manage paradoxes and how to navigate between them for our benefit.

The main part of the presentation will concentrate on finding the right balance between striving for individualism and belonging to the community of translators. We will try to identify how to work on individual images and positioning and yet supporting the community at the same time.
