Translating worldwide bestsellers

Date and time: 11:00-11:45, Sunday, 5 July, 2009
NOTE: This session has already been held

Room: Biljana Congress Hall

Description:
Literary translation, the true art of translation?

In an informal way, we are going to overview the world of literary translation - what does it really mean to be a literary translator? How to get a literary translation contract, the challenges of such a contract (cash-flow, deadlines, pressure from publishing house, and in the case of famous authors and bestsellers, the pressure from the public) and how to deal with them, building a reputation in such a closed world and becoming an 'official' translator of a bestselling author.

Speaker:
Victor Morozov (Ukraine), Translator of J.K. Rowling, Paulo Coelho, Roald Dahl, T.S. Eliot and famous singer and songwriter

Bio: One of Ukraine's most popular singer/songwriters, Victor Morozov is also a highly-regarded colleague who has translated some of the world's bestsellers.

His translations of T.S. Eliot's essays, W.P. Blatty's "The Exorcist" and other works were published in various Ukrainian literary journals throughout the 1980's. He translated Paulo Coelho's best-selling novels "The Alchemist" (May 2000), "Veronika Decides to Die" (December 2001) and "The Devil and Miss Prym" (September 2002). His translation of Benedict Anderson's "Imagined Communities" was published in April 2001 by Kyiv's "Krytyka".

Victor also translated famous Roald Dahl's "Mathilda" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", but is best known by Ukraine's younger generation as the translator of the full series of J.K.Rowling's world bestsellers "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (April 2002), "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (September 2002), "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (December 2002), "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (May 2003), "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix" (November 2003), "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (October 2005) and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" (September 2007).

In addition to his work on books, Victor has also worked on film script translations of popular Hollywood movies.

The full list of his translations can be found on his website under http://www.victormorozov.com/eng/victorbio.html#translations.
