I tried to open a new project in Across to translate a pdf file, but Across fails to read it.

Is it impossible to translate pdf files with Across?

I'm new to CAT tools, so I don't know what kind of work I should do before pdf file translation...tried to find some info in this forum, but at the first glance didn't find anything for the moment...

I would be really grateful to you if you could give me some instructions as it is urgent to me to understand whether I can apply for translating this project.

Thank you all in advance!!

Sofya

Do not try to translate PDF with any CAT.
You have to save it as "*.txt" from reader or Acrobat Pro and to format if you need with Word (for example).
Finereader may be useful to prepare file for translation...

AFAIK it is not possible Jan 25, 2012

to upload PDF documents in Across.

Two possible workarounds: use OCR to convert the document from PDF to word (or go to websites as www.pdftoword.com to upload the PDF, they will email it to you as an editable Word file), or open a free of charge account with Wordfast Anywhere and upload the document there in your password-protected account. The people at Wordfast have some magical OCR-technology behind their environment that can make something from almost any PDF, even scanned documents, and after uploading in WFA you can extract the document as a rich text file.

In both cases, you may have to do a bit of formatting and correcting the source document and store the document as a docx-file, which you then can upload into Across.

If the client requires the translation as a PDF, that can be done in the newer versions of Word as well.

If it is possible to upload PDF into Across, I would like to learn how, so if anybody wants to correct my opening statement about PDF-files not uploadable in Across I would certainly not see that as criticism.

@Sofya: feel free to send me a private message through my Proz profile if you require any further help or explanation.

Across cannot read pdf files Jan 25, 2012

Hi,

unfortunately you cannot import a pdf file in Across. You could ask the client if the file is available in another format. Otherwise you need a software that can convert your file.

Not so difficult Jan 25, 2012

@Sofya

Hi there! Across can't open a PDF file, but you can convert it to a word file (.doc) online. Go to: http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf-to-word-converter/ once in there, upload your pdf file (select archive) and then click on "upload and convert". A few seconds later, a dialog box will appear, asking where do you want to download your file, i.e. desktop. The file is zipped. Once you have the .doc file, open it with Across, translate it, and save it as "pdf" in word 2010. I hope this helps!

Cheers!

Martín

Try Wordfast Anywhere and/or Pro Jan 25, 2012

You can use Wordfast Anywhere or Wordfast Pro for the conversion of your PDF into a Word document. See http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL508CA28195C22A60&feature=plcp for more information.

Wordfast Anywhere (www.freetm.com) is free. Wordfast Pro is not free, but the PDF conversion feature is functional in the demo version.

thank you Jan 25, 2012

thank for your replies

1. yes, unfortunately i need a converter for pdf files if i want to work in ACross... ( Martin, on the link you gave me, the converter refuses to convert the whole document, so today i will decide whether or not to buy it (the sample produced by it seems very good! or i'll see where i can get it for free))

2. tried to open the file in trados studio 2009, created a project, but when i started translating Trados began to give me errors...and i don't see the very first page of my document...don't know whether to continue this way...Maybe if the file is too big, it's beter not to translate it without converting it to Word?for any CAT?

3. Dominique, thank you, i will try later to convert the file with wordfast everywhere. Do you normally work in this program? Do you like it?

PDF - image or real text Jan 25, 2012

Hi Sofya,
if your text is not really text, but it is an image, such as scanned text, you need an OCR program. Personally I use ABBY (the basic version that came with my scanner) to convert the image into real text.

I mostly translate with Wordfast Classic (which I have been using for more than 10 years), but Wordfast Anywhere is very similar, because it has the same architect. Many people who start in translation like Anywhere, because it's totally free and easy to use. You may want to join the dedicated mailing list for it at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wordfast_Anywhere/

Please note that even if you use Wordfast (Anywhere or Pro) in order to convert your PDF, you can still translate the resulting Word document with whatever tool you fancy.

Just for the record, the PDF conversion facility found in Wordfast Anywhere does OCR. You can see it in action here: http://youtu.be/ZwYgFbWzpFQ?hd=1

In that case, you can try Wordfast Pro, as shown here: http://youtu.be/bGDzllw6CFI?hd=1

But Wordfast Anywhere can also handle such PDF's. In fact, you can try both and see which one produces the best results for your particular PDF.

I tried this link - it seems good!

now i have my word doc, which i already imported into Across (oh,i forgot to control spelling errors first, i know...)

Dominique, don't know what's wrong, Wordfast Anywhere doesn't want to convert my file...maybe it deals with "dead" pdfsonly...or the file is too large to be processed so i have to create a zip file first

maybe tomorrow i'll try to download Wordfast pro o classic - as I understood it processes pdf files normally as well as other "difficult" formats? if it is easy to use, maybe i will switch to WF...who knows...never expected all these CATs were so complicated...

Maximum size for PDF's in Wordfast Anywhere Jan 25, 2012

Yes, there's a size limit for PDF's in Anywhere (I think it's 2 MB). If your PDF is bigger than that, you'll have to split it into smaller portions (there are free utilities that do that). Pro has no limits. If you can send me your PDF in private, I can check it with both.

Wordfast Classic doesn't deal with PDF's, but PlusTools (free) does.
