Here's an easy way (especially for those thinking to make the switch, you'll see why in a minute) to use a Mac and still be able to utilize all the wonderful tools people in the Windows world have access to.
Let's face it, there are a few programs out there that have not been ported to Mac OS yet. Shame, but what can we do. Virtual PC may be fine, but it's a software based emulation, susceptible to crashes and poor performance, and an extra investment. If you are thinking to start using a Mac, keep your Windows PC. Download Remote Desktop Connection for Mac from microsoft.com/mac, install on the Mac and connect to the Windows computer over the network. You can even forward ports on your router (check documentation) and log on over the Internet. This way you can do all translation in Windows and enjoy your "digital life" on the Mac. Someday, they will port [insert your fav tool here] to Mac OS and this little guide will be absolete.

p.s. to learn more about Remote Desktop connection, follow this link:

Edit:
You have to run Windows XP Pro (or a server version of Windows) to establish a Remote Desktop connection - thanks, Timothy.

Most home users don't have these versions of Windows:

* Windows XP Professional
* Windows Server 2003
* Windows 2000 Server
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server
* Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
* Windows NT® Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

Well, this is a forum for professional translators, after all.
It's a good point, Timothy. I personally haven't used any other version of Windows but XP Pro since its release, and all other flavors have been fazed out quite a while ago in the retail, so it never occurred to me to mention that little detail. Thanks for the correction.

so, so,

Are you saying that a freelance using a single PC need XP Profesional? for what?

And why should a use a Mac to connect to a PC if I have it beside?

Or are your workplace soooo big?
Working in a company?, well this is matter for the administrator, so it is no our problem as translators. VirtualPC is AFAIK the best solution for a Mac, but only for a Laptop for travelling, cause at home should be both machine running...if you really need a Mac.

No, this "little detail" has nothing to do with professional.

If you own a agency with employers, OK it maybe a good solution.. but we, freelancers, are still professionals with Windows Home Edition. And I hope your rates are high enough to buy so many OS and machines.

Best Regards
