can't do it with SDL | Nov 21, 2010 |
SDL doesn't seem to be able to OCR Arabic However, you can use Readiris Pro which may be able to help if the scan is good. I do have Readris Pro, I can try to OCR it for you if you want ! Kind regards,

For Mohamed SO SDL can make it if the source file is english?? I am just curious. The reason I was asking is that I have done many many translations where the source file is a scan, sometimes the source was english and sometimes it was arabic. If I get a job and I am stuck in editing it, I will definitely ask for your help. For Oussama, Thanks for the link. It was very helpful. It seems that this problem is not mine alone. ▲ Collapse

I'm not aware of any OCR program at all. Not as part of PDF Professional, or InDesign, or softwares that come with a number of scanners, etc. However, I must confess that being in Canada, I don't know if there are any scanners sold in the Arab World that come with an OCR, but I very much doubt it. Right to left non roman alphabet are poorly served in this department, and mainly because of the small market. Good luck

Yes, I agree. It's very frustrating and the problem is that most of the work I get here in the United States is from Arabic into English. Do you know of any reliable OCR that can work well with English source files?

Reliable Arabic OCR | Nov 23, 2010 |
I have Readiris Pro 11. After 3 trials with Arabic scanned docs I gave up and found that it is waste of time! Amending scanned Arabic takes time more than typing it from scratch. Readiris Pro 11 is great with English but poor with Arabic. My question now: do you have any idea of a reliable Arabic OCR software? Thank you
