Legal protection for translators?

Dear All,
As part of my research project for university I need to look into legal protection for translators in the Uk and in Germany- Are translators protected legally? how can you as a translator find out about this? What are the legal advantages if you would register as a company rather than a freelance translator?
If you know anything about this, own experience, websites, etc. please let me know.

Generally, to register as a company may bring you a lot of additional things, such management of the daily matters, contact with the clients and other translators, etc. Take the latter for example. Generally, to register as a company may bring you a lot of additional things, such management of the daily matters, contact with the clients and other translators, etc. Take the latter for example. You've got to contact the clients in different means and file the relevant information much more than you might think. Sure the ultimate benefits are great, but before you see the results, you have a long way to go, especially when you're lack of enough investment in the marketing.

Finding out the translators and have them screened are also time consuming, sometimes frustrating you when you're pressed by the deadline and fail to get a satisfied person to take over a job. All these are out of your motive to get a higher return than to be a freelancer. So, you get in it, it also worthy of it.

On the contrary, to be a freelancer is a simple role to play. Taking a lower price as it is, but you save a lot of breath. If you don't want to start up a business to get rich overnight, you might as well take the role of being a freelancer by working with the agencies. After all, it's the way most of the professionals do.:) ▲ Collapse

Professional liability insurance Apr 30, 2009

Look into the offerings for professional liability insurance in both countries. That will give you some useful background. The BDÜ also has a number of publications discussing issues of legal liability; look on www.bdue.de for more information.

Errors & omissions insurance Jul 1, 2009

In the US, we can get E&O insurance from an insurance company if we are a member of the American Translators Association (ATA). I believe this insurance company is in effect getting the insurance from Lloyd's of London. Which may be applicable to translators in Europe. HTH.

Try Googling on: professional liability insurance translators. Plus you will need to specify which risks you are talking about, and which mechanisms are appropriate.

Some suggestions: possible protection measures: a legal advisor (lawyer), and others have said them already [professional liability insurance (not always easily available to individuals, perhaps easier if you are a member of a professional association), registering a limited liability company (to protect against personal liability, seizure of private assets,etc), ... ] ▲ Collapse
